Big game for us coming up. It's a must win if we are going to even think about top 4.

Right now you'd think the only IN would be Leo. I guess some other possibilities are Schmidt, Dempster and a long shot LRT. I would think that right now Grundy, Brennan and Richards are all possible outs.

Anyway, thoughts on the game?

Obviously it is a must win and it will be a complete disaster if the Swans lose this game as there would be the very real possiblity of Sydney missing out on the 8. My opinion is the Swans need to play hard and attacking football and simply outgun St Kilda who have had some problems scoring large totals this year. If the Swans score over 100 im almost certain we will win the game.

I'm worried about this game but i don't even want to think about losing because i don't know what i'd do. I know what Jarrad McVeigh's car looks like so maybe i'll get myself in the back of it and then attack him when he's driving home.

swans will win...watched tape of sunday's melb game again today, well, bits, and i'm starting to truly believe again that we're a genuine shot at the flag....did you see our run, handball and carry? it really did look like it's all clicking now, after a dismal, worrying season...and right in the thick of it was one spida everitt, his handballing was brilliant
also, great to see amon back to his best form, just as he was in the finals series of 05....i HATE getting confident and ahead of myself, but it's starting to feel really good again
obviously, a loss on saturday night and we're ins trife, but a loss simply means we're not good enough and don't deserve a shot

Yeah i know what you mean. You want to be positive but not cocky. I think i've just gotta stick to the one week at a time mentality. I was thinking about where i'd stay in Melbourne if the Swans made the GF again today.. i really can't do that! ONE WEEK AT A TIME!

yea rancid, you are right about our ball movement against melbourne, it was really good. Why are most st kilda games tough for us? First thing that i remember about a saints game was last year when we lost by a tiny bit in the pouring rain because of that stupid michael rix who kicked the first goal of the match that hit the post but was a goal. Umpires arghh  i hope stephen milne gets knocked out or something this sat.

not sure why, but i think they get "up" for us,going back to that wonderful round 11 in 2004, i think....when we stopped their 10-game streak
i remember in our flag year, i took my sons to the dome thinking we'd beat saints, and they blew us away, fraser kicked 6 or 7 i think, and they just made us look like hacks....but i think it tends to even out each year, they get us once and we get them once, so goign on that i think we're due this week....AND i much prefer us at telstra stadium these days
we play like we did in 2nd-3rd quarters v dees (well, most of that period) we'll win

Oh well. We beat them in the most important one of all, the 05 preliminary.

This will be a tighter contest than the melbourne game and I think it will be both teams having players around the ball. Unlike earlier in the year I think weve upped our game and the Saints players I think will drop off as the game wears on.

Swans by 4 goals.

I promise i wasn't stalking him! Haha, i went to this lame after match thing a few weeks ago and as we were going to the car so were the some of the players. Jarrad McVeigh's car was massive and it looked like a hearse so i have no trouble remembering it.

Most important game given the last fortnight against the Junk teams. This is our chance to show we are coming home hard. We can still mathematically make second spot on the ladder if we win all four games and the Roos and Eagles have at least one slip-up.

This game will come down to how our defence holds up against Riewoldt, Gehrig & Kosi (If he plays there) with Leo almost a certainty to come back in at the expense of Brennan we will have four tall defenders in Bolton, Barry, Richards and Reg. However only one possibly two of those have a chance of containing any of the Saints big power forwards so its going to be a big ask.

Hopefully Jolly comes up ok and he and Spida can push forward and give us extra option up forward and stretch the small St Kilda defence.

Key Match Up's
Bolton V Riewoldt
Hall V Maguire
Kirk V Hayes/Ball
JollySpida V Whoever (Must Dominate this area)

All in all I'm picking the Swans by 14 points Hall to kick 5.

Our form at Telstra Stadium this year has been diabolical.

If we lose this, I can't see us making the finals. Our run home is tough, this game is a must win.

The thought of losing makes me want to cry. Lately i've been having bad flash backs of those last few minutes of the 06 GF. The only thing that can make them go away is if we win this year! We've gotta win this week to keep that dream alive.

btw, i dont know which game you were watching, but i thought the swans were ordinary for half the game last week. wc or cats would have gone on with it and won by another 40 points. melb are pathetic at the moment, we shoulda won by more. st kilda will really worry us this weekend.

what's the crowd prediction for the game???. guessing its 60 000 or so like it usually is at recent Telstra games. I only bought tickets today and I only managed to get them in the bay next to the Saints fans:( (work has kept me from going to games unfortunately)

Most think the crowd will be in the mid 40K region however the Testra Stadium Three game package deals and the Breast Cancer thing may bump it up to around 50k or more. Hopefully it gets close to 60k but idoubt it though.

Have a feeling swans are gona go down to the saints this weekend...the hard running riewoldt will tear apart swans on the big telstra stadium.. he always steps up for the big occasion
For some reason it's always the under dog who wins the match between swans and saints. Saints have beatin the swans a couple of times at the SCG when swans have been clear fav's and in the prelim in 2005 swans went in as under dogs but went on to win easily

Key players/match ups

C.bolton vs Riewoldt- bolton needs to stop riewoldt having an influence on the game

Kirk vs ball/dal santo/hayes- kirk to go to adleast one of these players, ball carrying an injury so unlikely to go to him, hayes little bit inconsisent this year, hasnt really been able to find his form from last year but still a very capable player. Dal santo i would say would get the main tag very good skills in close with very quick hands and has one of the best kicks in the afl.

F.gehrig- not sure whos gona get him depends on if leo barry returns or not. Gehrig likes playing the swans usually plays well kicking 4 or 5. Swans need to get him angry, might take his mind off the game.

O'keefe- will run all day, likes the wide spaces at telstra stadium, gives great delivery to the fowards. Prefer it when O'keefe stays foward nd moves up to the wings to get the ball, don't like it when moves down back

R.harvey- this looks like it might be his last year, wants to play finals will do anything to get his team over the line, if he gets to much of the ball swans could be in trouble

S.fisher- saints rebound machine, leave this guy lose in defence and u are asking for trouble

Nick malcheski- swans rebound machine, let him lose and he will destroy the saints, one of the best kicks in the afl and likes to run and carry the ball from defence. Let him rack up 25 possies or more nd the swans will be on the way to an easy win

i think you're being harsh....we've never been a side that blows weak teams away, we've always taken the foot off the throat, and the last 10 mins or so on sunday that's what we did, it was horrible but also obvious we'd put the cue in the rack

it was the first three quarters that were more instructive....we were brilliant in bursts, and i KNOW the opposition was abysmal, but there were 18 bodies there for us to get through and around, and we did in probly the best style of the whole season.....just think we can now all be a bit more optimistic that the team's time has not yet come and gone
we have to keep winning, of course, but i think roos will have a bit more for his old offsider lyon to deal with this week

apparently saints want to play ball more as a small forward for the rest of the year as he's injured....i think the key is which team's run out of defence will deliver better, both teams have good running defenders and great forward lines, so whichever forward line gets the better service....one area we ARE better equipped is in the ruck, even saints fans concede they are still struggling in the ruck division going back to the grant thomas era

Oh When the Saints

Should be a ripper of a game ... we normally have good matches :thumbsu:

Key Matchups

Hall - Maguire
O'Loughlin - Hudghton
Schneider - Attard
O'Keefe - L. Fisher
Goodes - Blake

Jolly - M. Clarke
Koschitzke - Everitt
Malceski - Baker
Dal Santo - Kirk

Riewoldt - C. Bolton
Gehrig - Barry
Koschitzke - T. Richards

The Saints were in great form until last week against the Dogs, and we dropped off a bit ...

Swans are warming up nicely and will be keen to attest for the loss earlier in the year.

Should be a good battle in the midfield, and each defence will have their work cut out.

Big worry is Goose vs. Hall ... Maguire hasn't been in great touch the last couple of weeks, and has lost a bit of pace after his leg injury. Hall could be too quick and strong for him.

Hudghton can always take Hall, so we are flexible there ...

The key for the Saints is a good start ... we have been very poor in first quarters over the past few weeks, so if we can improve in that area then we should be better off.

Here's to a good match :thumbsu:

Mm, I'm really worried about this game. Our recent record, the 05 PF excluded, against St Kilda has been pretty poor. Add to that Lyon's inside knowledge, Leo's return from injury against G-Train and this could be a recipe for disaster.

I'd expect St Kilda to line up like this

B: S.Fisher, Hudghton, Baker
HB: Gram, Maguire, Gilbert
C: Blake, Hayes, Fiora
HF: Harvey, Riewoldt, Ball
F: X.Clarke, Gehrig, Milne

Foll: Koschitzke, Dal Santo, Montagna
Int: Attard, Birss, M.Clarke, L.Fisher

OUT: Jones
IN: Ball

Maguire v Hall
Hudghton v O'Loughlin
Gilbert v O'Keefe
Baker v Davis

Blake v Goodes
Attard v Schneider

Koschitzke v Everitt
M.Clarke v Jolly

Ball v Malceski

Kirk to take Hayes, has a good record against him.
Mathews, the 2nd best tagger, will probably get Harvey.
After that, who knows.

Wouldn't expect Baker to take Davis, I think Nick will be too good overhead for him. I see S.Fisher to O'Keefe and L.Fisher to Davis.

McVeigh back to his defensive forward position will most likely pick up Gram.

Would love for S.Fisher to take O'Keefe and have him actually play on someone for a change but I doubt it will happen as Fisher is the king of winning uncontested Football in the back half.
However if O'Keefe pushes up the ground I doubt Fisher would go with him allowing Ryan O' to get plenty of the ball.

Whilst the goal kicking issues have turned around. Another area where I think we'll have dramatically improved upon our last meeting will be in the speedsters.

We had Crouch and Jack in the side back then - one who was seriously underdone and the other a rookie - and Tiger was out injured (which impacted heavily on Mal's ability to find space on the night). And Amon and Schneider were playing very ordinary footy back then (and were both on the verge of being dropped altogether).

This time we have Amon, Schneider and Bevan who are all pretty quick playing very well. And with Tiger back and reuniting with Mal in one of the best backline combos we've had in a long time we might have an edge in that department.

And although I hate the term "x-factor" we should remember that Goodes was seriously struggling in the first half of the year. We went through him a fair bit in that game, and he tried hard. But he is now well and truly firing. And should give the Sainters a lot more headaches. :thumbsu:

If that match-up happens and it pans out as you suggest, will be interesting to see how the coaches each regard the likely damage of Fisher picking up uncontested possessions in the back-half (and launching the Saints forward) vs O'Keefe wandering all over the ground unmarked. If we're winning at least our fair share of the ball, I'd be quite happy with a Ryano running free. And while Fisher has had a great year, his disposal isn't quite up there with Malceski's - ie he doesn't seem to have the same ability to completely pierce the forward line with a single, long, penetrating kick. The flip side of that is that Riewoldt and Kossie are such good contested marks that they don't need the ball delivered lace out - they just need it delivered quickly and moderately purposefully.

I agree I believe if the match-up goes how I suspect it would it would be better for us as Ryan O' is very smart dangerous player.

However I doubt very much the Saints will risk allowing him to roam free in midfield and will more likley play Gilbert or someone similar on Ryan O' and let Fisher play loose rebounding and dropping back to double team Hall when where bringing the ball in.

We need quick ball movement into the forward as I'd back each of forwards one out against there direct opponent but if we allow the Saints to get numbers back to often they will kill us on the rebound and have some awesome forwards who as you say can take strong contested marks.

Then I agree with you.

So who would you have played on Davey last week? Or Milne this week?

I would have no problem if you argued a fit Crouch at the expense of Bevan would improve the team, but with Crouchy not currently available, Bevan is doing a role each week for which there are no obvious alternatives. Schneider is possibly the only other with experience playing those types of role and, while he's done it quite well, I really like what he's been giving us through the midfield and in the forward line over the past month. I don't think we'd be improved by sending him down back.

SouthSwans
10 Aug 2007, 02:10
Ablett can do that. Bevan is too one-dimensional as a tagger. We only need one of those players in our side (bloke in my avatar) or there is too much negativity. Kirk, Ablett, Schneider and McVeigh are defensive midfielders too.

As an overall complete player: Schmidt > Dempster > Brennan > Laidlaw > Bevan.

Schmidt is an awesome prospect but a first year player, and one who plays a very different role to Bevan. Can't wait to see him cement a spot. But I see him becoming a regular in the next 2 years without doubt (hopefully next year assuming he keep his regime up).

I actuially would not mind seeing Kirk taking Harvey. Harvey is still good but Kirk may be able to gain some space on him when were in possesion, just as long as he can cover him when we dont.

Kirk doesn't really need the space though. He does his best work with clever handballs in close and his footskills aren't really good enough to take advantage of any space he does get. The beauty of him is that he is able to be our most damaging clearance player at the same time as stifling an opponent. It's not an either / or with him.

Ablett or Mathews should be able to play reasonably tight on Harvey - and if Ablett does and is able to manufacture a bit of space at times, he at least has the penetrating boot able to send it forward quickly.

Agreed that Kirk can work very well in tight space and if the game dictates that style be played than so be it. I do disagree with you though that his footskills don’t benefit from a little clear space than when there is someone right on his hammer.

I thought tonight's game was dipped in free kicks. It was overloaded with them tonight and some came out of no where. One which startled me was giving the free kick to C.Bolts when clearly Gehrig and C.Bolts were holding on each other. Should've been a play on or a ball up.

But hey! 4 points is good enough for me. Since when did the Swans receive more free kicks against their opponents. We should frame this match...

A couple of our maligned players played well today. McVeigh presented around the forward line and kicked a few in what was a congested area for much of the night.

And Paul Bevan ran very hard across half back, matched up physically when needed to and ran with his team mates to position and worked hard in taking up some of Mal's slack as I think Malceski did something during the game that slowed him up a bit.

My son is a jockey and he doesn't have a high voice. Most jocks dont, only the very youg apprentices.

Sorry if I offended you (never intended to) but, stereotypically speaking he sounded like a jockey.

Not offended at all, but you just said it again. I can assure you they are not stereotypes. Maybe metaphoric is the correct word.

Yeah, metaphoric.

Paul Bevan has really stepped up this year, and he's been holding onto his man tightly recently and his pace and confidence is up. He's not looking for options as much and is creating his own by taking a few risks and all. :thumbsu:

BTW, i cringed all the time when someone tackles Tadhg. Thankgod he pulled up well seeing this game was going to be a tight and congested game.

Gutsiest win of the season if you ask me. This does wonders for our finals chances.
