Sad news, if true- had done an excellent job in the English county scene....I know eddie will not be happy with this news, as the freak was one of his favourites....

Harvey fears end to playing days

This could effectively mean the premature end of my playing career which is a bitter pill to swallow

Ian Harvey fears his playing career may be over after the Home Office refused to grant him British citizenship.

The Derbyshire all-rounder, 35, had been in limbo since a first application was rejected because of a drink-driving offence in May. Appeals have failed.

Any conviction would count against his character under Home Office guidelines.

The Australian said: "This is obviously a very bitter blow to myself and my family. I feel I have been punished many times over for one offence."

Harvey, who featured in Australia's 2003 World Cup success, was a vital cog in the successful Gloucestershire one-day machine around the turn of the millennium.

He went on: "I fully accepted I had made a mistake, pleaded guilty and was dealt with by the court.

"In addition to that I have been punished by the Home Office in refusing my citizenship and the England and Wales Cricket Board for not exercising their discretion when they have the power to do so.

"This could effectively mean the premature end of my playing career which is a bitter pill to swallow.

"I cannot thank everyone involved at Derbyshire enough for their support. They have stuck by me throughout this when they could have easily cut me loose immediately.

"Not only have the club kept me on board but they have given me an opportunity to develop my coaching skills which is something I will now look to progress."

Derbyshire chief executive Tom Sears said: "This is devastating news for Ian and his family and seems a punishment completely disproportionate to the offence."

The club cannot field him as their only permitted overseas player in 2008 if their skipper, prolific batsman Simon Katich, wishes to continue.

What is it that they say in Australia, 'Drink drive bloody idiot'.

Hardly surprising. If the average person applied for citizenship of another country with a drink driving conviction, it would hardly be news that they weren't accepted. Anyway, the guy is 35, stick a fork in him.

Asylum.

Didn't realise it was that bad in Aus  He's played in this country for long enough to claim citizenship hasn't he? I would have rejected it on ground he's a bit of an ugly munter anyway ;)

Asylum.

Wonder how many Asylum seekers,Refugees,Immigrants, and New Zealanders,,, could be excluded from having Aussie Citizenship, because of crimes against humanity,,but an aussie that has a drink driving offence, is castigated world wide, shame on PC and the ECB:::eek::thumbsd:

They didn't have the Citizenship decision... the ECB decision is all about allowing another Overseas (Their third) to play for Derbyshire when noone else gets that choice. (There is nothing against him playing as an overseas) He can still play if Katich of Birt can't.

He started the season playing as an Overseas Player (Birt wasn't playing because of injury) when Birt comes back he has to stop playing as an overseas due to the two player limit, he then drinks and drives as he's trying to gain citizenship and it's refused The ECB could allow him to play but it wouldn't be fair on the other counties (I imagine as a whole the Counties rejected the proposal)

Exactly.

Does Harvey really think that's he's such a cause celebre that the ECB should cut another place for an England qualified player just for him.

These parasites who come to county cricket make me sick.
