Does anyone know the story behind the mail getting around that an umpire got belted in the two's game between Murrumbeena and Dingley on Saturday.

If it proves to be true this GOOSE should get life, our League does not need this sort of crap.

Was it the young Dingley club umpire, i don't condone any violence towards umpires but that kid should not be umpiring, he does not pay a free kick to opposition all day

Just read in the Herald Sun the GOOSE got 10 years for his outburst, but what really strikes me is the SFL have not put a thing on there outdated website informing all that the league won't cop whacking an umpire (or words to that effect).

Whoever is incharge of the website please get your act togeather and put updates on all the time not just now and then.

HAS TO BE THE WORST FOOTBALL LEAGUE WEBSITE ON THE NET.

Here is the article from the Herald Sun Today........i posted in in the Div 2 thread.

A TEEN footballer has been banned for 10 years over allegations he hit an umpire at the weekend.

Shane Middleton was playing for Murrumbeena against Dingley on Saturday when he was reported for striking 15-year-old umpire Jack Thompson.
Thompson was left shaken by the incident, which happened during the third quarter of the Southern Football League reserves game at Peter Robertson Oval.

He continued umpiring until the end of the match, after Middleton was escorted from the ground.

Police are investigating.

Middleton, 17, was reported twice for striking and once for abusive language in his side's 73-point loss.

Murrumbeena officials said yesterday he deeply regretted his actions.

Southern Football League chief executive Garry Cranny said such incidents threatened to turn potential umpires away from the sport.

"I believe he (Thompson) was a little shaken by the incident and didn't remember too much about it after the game," Mr Cranny said.

"It's a highly regrettable incident.

"It's also regrettable to note that it appears to be a very young player not much older than the umpire. That may have been an influencing factor in the incident."

Mr Cranny said Thompson had the potential to be an excellent umpire.

"He's a very good umpire for his age," he said.

"He's not out of his depth doing reserves games. In fact, his competency is such that he could umpire senior games, but he's just too young at the moment.

"It's as heavy a sentence as our independent tribunal has handed down."

Murrumbeena president Ross Gould vowed the club would stand by its player.

He admitted the incident had come as a huge shock to the club, which prides itself on its family-friendly environment.

"It's a very serious matter and we're not shying away from it, but we will be totally supportive of the boy," Mr Gould said.

"He's upset about it. There's no bravado about it whatsoever. He's totally remorseful."

The league boss added that discussions would take place soon to see if the suspended Middleton could become an umpire to learn from his mistake.

It's good to see the league take a tough stance on these matters. I particularly like the last point about trying to encourage the guy to take up umpiring.
Seeing he is a young bloke and maybe capable of changing his ways etc, should they consider a further incentive by suggesting that if he umpires, maybe his 10 years can be reduced to 5-7 yrs orr something, to give him a chance to still play some decent footy in his late 20s. That way everyone can win out of a bad situation.
What are peoples thoughts??

The line in the SFL statement that I find strange is:

'his competency is such that he could umpire senior games, but he's just too young at the moment.'

Having played a lot of footy, I reckon that controlling reserves can be harder than seniors so therefore struggle to the sense in allowing a 15 yr old to umpire reserves but not seniors

Should have gotten life and I can't see why he didn't.

It's the lowest thing a player of any sport can do and for f*** sake, its a 15 year old.

If I was the kid or the parents I would want charges against that guy.

geez no offence to the young bloke but surely after an incident like that he would be umpiring a high pressure game like this weeks one between dingley and springy

Maybe he can just mediate between BadBrad and Correct Weight at the beer tent?!

seriously does anyone think the young bloke should umpire such an intense game as this one. coz after last weeks incident he would have to be pretty shaken up.

If he is a good enough umpire then it shouldn't really matter. If a player gets crunched in a contest you don't give him a couple of weeks to get over it, you just expect him to 'get back on the horse'. Granted this is a different scenario, but we all want umpires to be more thick skinned. If he is competent, and up for it, then good luck to him.

Not condoning contacting an umpire, but there was no striking whatsoever, and he was not escorted from the ground (a statement that implies he was continually agressive)... The paper has not reported the facts.

There was grabbing of his shirt and an attempted shove from all reports, definitely no striking of any sort.

Geez, that surely makes it ok then 'he only pushed and grabbed' an umpire. He shouldnt have got anything. You are a peanut, without umpires we wouldnt have a game and any interfearence is a disgrace. Got what he deserved, footy doesnt need people like that or ones who support the guy.

Pull your head in GOING PLACES, if you read my post properly you would have seen that I don't condone him touching the umpire. What I said was the incident was not reported correctly in the paper.
