All my bitching and moaning to get Voss in the side will finally be put to the sword. I like the ins but possible think we should have Rix instead of Briss. Hopefully we will do well enough out ot the ruck with Kosi and Blake, should do.

R Clarke in, not convinced. Hope he proves me wrong.

Wha'tha?!?

Is Lyon seriously going to go in with only Kosi to ruck? And why has Attard been dropped? Please tell me this is only to let him recover from the knock late in the Sydney game - he doesn't deserve to be dropped, especially for Raph (Raph's still not fit enough, and should be playing reserves until next year). I understand the dropping Jones, and I think it's great to bring in Birss and Voss, but to take only one ruck into the game...? The funny thing is how much this is a GT-like selection decision!

Ah well, Mr Lyon, you're the boss, so you know better than me. I look forward to you proving me wrong on Saturday.

Yeah it is interesting. I guess Clarke is too out of sorts to get a selection any more, will be a ruck coach next year i think, and Rix's ruck wins is not beneficial enough to make up for his around the ground deficiencies?

From AFL preview:
Justin Koschitzke v Daniel Gilmore
To call Gilmore a ‘big man’ at 189cm is almost unfair but he showed little regard for that last week in dominating around the ground against Essendon. Kosi and the Saints’ midfielders will need to monitor his ruck-roving style if they are to limit his influence. The Saints might well use Jason Blake against Gilmore and use

The Saints haven't had much of an opportunity to take on Freo at home recently, or ever really. (Our recent home matches against Freo have been played in Tassie). In fact in the history of our clubs encounters, we have only met once at our home base (TD). So this match will go a long way towards finally establishing a proper home ground dominance.

There has been no lack of controversy regarding many of our recent meetings - terms like sirengate, whispers in the sky (both resulting in wins to Freo by less than a goal)

Our last meeting was a disappointing loss to Freo at their home base. The teams were:

The Saint's defence is improved whilst the Dockers offence is improved and both teams ruck stocks are weaker (although the Saints are probably worse off)

Considering we lost by one scoring shot I am please our backs are back. Farmer was teh difference last time, blowing us away in the first quarter.

I remember it clearly, making pancakes and listening. Thise pancakes copped it.

Farmer was still under club suspension, Sauce Head.

I think you are mixing our last two meetings up together into one big purple nightmare. Don't worry - we will play a much better game at home in front of our own crowd.

I'm not not jumping on the anti-Gehrig bandwagon, but does anyone else think that we could have found a spot for Watts. Maybe start Fraser and if he looks like having a shocker giving Watts a run. But I guess we cant afford to have too many non midfielders on the bench.

We definitely owe them a massive smashing! Every Saint at the game will have to be screaming our guts out to give our boys the home ground advantage for once (or twice to be correct)!

You are right, I was thinking round 21 or whatever last year. Bad pancakes.

Basically, the reason for taking Raph is purely structural... i.e. inside v outside.

Freo is a outside team and st kilda is very much an inside team. Just to match them up, raph's been picked who's an outside player. Birss is also an outside/inside and Voss is a pure outside player.

I think Goddard's a big loss for this match particularly, because it was this match 2 years ago that he really stamped his authority and pretty much controlled the match from his backline position.

I hope they use Maguire to do some long kicking otherwise we are likely to get killed out on the outside. Having Voss helps in this game because he can go back.

I still think we should write Raph off for the year and instead get him right for next. The better option would have been to bring in Thompson. That way we would be up on the inside atleast.. rather than being 50-50 in the inside and 40-60 on the outside.

From last time we played:

In: M Hudghton, M Maguire, J Gram, L Montagna, X Clarke, R Clarke
Out: M Clarke, M Rix, J Attard, D Armitage, A McQualter, J Gwilt

The ins shore up our defence stocks beautifully and giving us more run and adds towards that inside / outside ratio in Montagna (especially) as well as Gram and the Clarkes.

The losses include 2 ruckmen, a tagger, 2 apprentice midfielders and a fill in defender. Whilst the ruck deficit may end up costing us, we have a much better balance and generally better run and fitness.

Hey, was wondering why Kosi didnt play today??

General soreness was a reason cited.
