Anyone heard the latest on Maxie? His toughness will be a valuable addition if we can get him back for the finals. Is he due to play with the VFL team this week?

Inside goss was that he was progressing faster than expected - whether it was the guru in Munich or not, they are very positive. He will not be thrown back in until he is 100% and is not far off it. Would not divulge more.

I tried bribery, threats, idle promises of all sorts of favours - all rejected !!!
I'm also wondering who will make way for him with Josh Hunt hitting form.

Let's see if he gets through the magoos game before wondering who he'll replace

Nabblett out Rooke in.
A half fit Rooke would be better at CHF at the moment. You'd get a strong contest.
Nabblett needs to kick some goals in the VFL and come back next year - sans headband.

Different players, bad change.
How about this?
Out: Kelly
In: Rooke
Kelly is soft and continually turns the ball over. When max is back, i would love to see this change.

Not bad, but keeping Varcoe in? Surely Kelly warrants a spot over Varcoe.

Granted, however Varcoe atleast puts his body on the line at times and provide invaluable forward line pressure.
I know on his day, Kelly can be fantastic, however too often his disposal and lack of agreesion frustrate me too death. The same can be said for King. BRING BACK BLAKEY!

The only player I can see being forced out is Varcoe. Even though it is not a role for role swap, we have enough flexibility through the centre to cover for Varcoe going out.
No way Kelly will be dropped. He's been in far worse form than this and still been kept in the seniors.
I highly doubt Josh will be dropped after last week either. I have a feeling that what he did on Sunday was in direct contrast to what he had been dropped for. I think the reason he's been in the bad-books, and what he's been spoken to about, was rectified by him on Sunday. I reckon the coaching staff may be pretty happy with him atm.

Thought Kelly has had his best period at the Club for a long time until Sunday, was disastrous. Don't think it warrants him being dropped though.

If he can come back this week then give him a run in the vfl then buing him back round 22. If hes not fit this week then put him staright back in in round 22. Wouldn't mind if he replaced Kelly, Varcoe or even Hunt. He would be gret to have back before finals.

I agree, I think Kelly has been sensational for the last couple of months, particularly when he has played as a half-forward. Good pressure, good hands, smart decision maker kicking inside 50, and not a bad kick for goal.
On Sunday, I think the coaches struggled to find a role for him. He was sort of on Wells, sort of on the wing, sort of half-back, he didn't have a spot, or a match-up, and he was on and off the ground as a result. This week, I expect him to play more in the forward line, hpefully with a few runs on the ball.
If Max were fit this week, I'd have Varcoe out and Max in, with Kelly and Chapman playing more inside 50 to cover Varcoe.

That is another of my major critisms of Kelly. He does not respect his opposition player and too often lets them free and on there lonesome. He was guarding Wells for a period of time on Sunday and he was far to careless.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've seen this year. Kelly is one of the reasons why we are playing so well. Suggest you have a re-think, look at his stats and his tackling also.
Sure he had an average game last week, however he is worth more than what you have listed.

By the way. When and if Max does return to the senior side, where is he most likely to play? The backline looks stitched up at the moment. Could he play CHF or FF? He is the same size as Charlie and Charlie has a few backers on this forum to relace Nablett in the forward line.

That I do agree on, we do have different opinions of Kelly. He did have a very average game on the weekend, however I really think that he has played extremely well this year and is in our best 22.
Where we can fit Max in ?? I'd most likely say Varcoe, as Max too can tackle like a man possessed. Sure doesn't have the speed of Varcoe, but when recently has Varcoe used that speed in a positive manner ??
Look I like Varcoe also, however if it meant a pass from Kelly or Trav coming in, I'd know who'd I would want it coming from, same goes for Rooke, rather him in, Trav out.

Plenty of good chases on the weekend which affected kicks.

Nah, Varks is good when it comes down to chasing a man down but once he catches up to him he tackles - sometimes too high and sometimes he makes a silly mistake.

Varcoe is a reactive player at the moment. He doesn't know how to demand the ball. If the opposition have the ball, Varcoe is comfortable. That's not what you want.
However, he does have some serious pace, and an unbelievable set of hands, so there is clearly more than enough there to work with, I just don't think he is in our best 22 at this stage, which will more than likely be available to us in the near future.
Strongly disagree with you there I'm afraid. It's one of the things he DOES NOT do.
He ran past the contest on more than a few occasions on Sunday. If it was Stokes, he would've put his head over the ball and at least make a contest. Yes Trav's defensive pressure is great but he certainly didn't put his body on the line over the weekend.

travis is going to be terrific player for us....the experiment of having travis play as a defensive forward has worked for most of the year, but his effectiveness has diminished recently. I think this has a lot to do with the opposition having worked him out ie he is a one trick pony to a certain extent. While I am a big fan of him I just wonder how he will be in finals. With his current role I just think that he may prove a weak spot in our finals campaign. I think if Rooke is fit he would be much better value as a defensive forward than Varcoe at this stage. Rooke may not be as quick, but he wont let his opposition player run off him to create an extra loose man as much. He also will kick more goals than Travis. For me Rooke (if he is fit) should get the nod ahead of Trav.

Bad idea Hoff
Kelly is regaining form, and if you remember the finals series of '04 and '05, he was one of our best performed players. He was joint - BOG for us in the '05 semi against the Swans, along with Scarlett (IIRC). I think he could well have something to offer come finals time... and he certainly isn't soft.
I would just wait and see how Rooke goes in the 2's first, before hypothesising about who to drop. It may become evident over the next two weeks who Rooke should come in for, so lets not do any players a disservice by writing them off too quickly.

that's a terrible call... james has been carving up on the hff lately, setting up a lot of goals and running hard to put pressure on the opposition and push up the ground to add a link/alternate option... his form this year has more than warranted his selection and is far from soft... also his disposal by foot has been pinpoint at times

I'd go as far as to say that's exactly what i'd want.
I wouldn't want Varcoe demanding the ball. Why would you when there are 5 other forwards plus anyone else in the area that would serve the team better if they demanded the ball?
Varcoe is in the side as the crumbing forward. Crumbing forwards aren't there to demand the ball. (i'll acknowledge that he hasn't been doing much successful crumbing of late, although did i hear the commentators say he had 3 assists in the Adelaide match?)
The other half of his job is to chase and tackle (which is reactive) and i think he's always done this well, including last week V the Roos.

Fair point, but you can't have a guy that, when it is his turn to put his body on the line and grab a hard ball, doesn't do it.
What I was referring to with what you don't want, is the comfort when the other team has the ball. He doesn't want it for himself, he will let them get it and then see what happens from there. Mackie was shocking at this last year. I repeat, you DO NOT WANT IT.

Sorry I've heard about all his treatment...and I watched the game when it happened...however i haven't heard how severe it was, can anyone who knows please tell me?
Im assuming it didn't tear it right off or he would have missed a year like Lloyd did, other than that can't see why he missed 8 weeks
^^Hes been having issues with his hammy for ages now.
I just want him back. We will need him come finals. Favourite player for me.

GEELONG defender Max Rooke is set to make his return to competitive football on Sunday when he runs out for the club's VFL side in Bendigo.
Rooke will play his first game since round 13, and since returning from Munich where he underwent radical treatment on his troublesome hamstring.
"I'm a little bit nervous about it, but excited as well," Rooke told gfc.com.au.
"Hopefully I can get through a game without any injuries – that would be nice."
The club decided to send Rooke to Germany last month in an attempt to shelve the hamstring problems that have plagued his season.
The 25-year-old spent 11 days in Munich under the care of soft-tissue specialist Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfarth, who administered approximately 70 injections of anti-inflammatories and extracts of calf blood into Rooke’s hamstring.
So far, the treatment appears to have been a success.
"I'm feeling pretty fit. I've been doing a lot of training and working pretty hard," Rooke said.
"Obviously coming back from a big break, you're never going to be 100 per cent match-fit, because you can't prepare for match fitness; it just takes time.
"I feel pretty good, like I'm ready to go."
Rooke is hopeful he'll be fit enough to be considered for selection as Geelong gears up for its finals campaign in coming weeks, but he doesn't want to get too excited just yet.
"I really don't know. It just depends how I go on Sunday," he said.
"I'm only really worried about, first of all, getting through the game injury free, and that's about my only aim at the moment.
"I'd like to get back [for the finals], but … I haven't played for about eight weeks.
"Right now, I'm just happy to be back playing."
