View Full Version : Leonardo Dicaprio - The New Marlon Brando
Will be the best actor of our generation his last two performances have been scintilating.
The Departed he was brilliant, Blood Diamond superb. Toss in his efforts for the Aviator and you have a modern great on your hands.
And anyone who saw Gilbert Grape would agree he deserved an Oscar for his role.

Brilliant actor, but thats a huge call considering Brando's considered the best ever.

I watched The Basketball Diarys again the other night.
The dude sure can act.
The scene at the end where he is asking his Mum for money is full on.
Yep, he sure has a lot of talent. Almost every movie he does is good.
Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York + Titanic were also some of his best work :thumbsu:

Couldn't agree more. Certainly one of my favourite actors and has generally chosen his roles very very well (bar the Beach, but can't blame him for cashing in at least once)

Probably should have done Boogie Nights instead of Titanic. Don't know if he'll be as good as Brando but he is definatly a brillaint actor. Probably the best going around ATM what's he working on at the moment does anyone know?

Not really a fan of his, possibly due to Titanic, lol. But I agree he's one of the better actors.
For me, the current best actor would probably have to be Jonny Depp.

He's had some good-uns but he sure has had some howlers as well.
Comparing to Brando is nuts. Compare him to Morgan Freeman or Gene Hackman, or someone else middle of the range like that.
He was great on Growing Pains!

A great actor - he has the performances on the board to back that up!
Im a big fan of his work. Im glad he has lost the pretty boy stigma.
I rate him a bale as the best of this generation.
Was brilliant in gilbert grape, i also liked this boys life with deniro.

Thats a tough one. Say what you will about the movie, i thought he did well in Titanic, and he became a phenomenon after that movie. Probably set him up for life.
He is a talented actor but i don't know how well things would have gone for him if he did boogie nights instead. Right choice imo.

Well I agree with you he was awesome in Titanic but I think it was bad for both him and Kate Winslet. Both are extremely talented and both are determined to be great actors not movie stars. This movie unfortunatly due to its popularity made them massive movie stars something they did not want. Winslet struggle afterwards distancing herself by doing risky ventures that set her back. Leo became the boy idol he definatly didnt want to become. Loved by teenage girls everywhere he basically had to take a few years off acting just to escape the spotlight. Boogie Nights is now a movie he himself said he should of done.

I thought this thread was a joke, clearly not. Leonardo is downright annoying, i agree he wasn't AS annoying as what he usually is in 'blood diamond' BUT i think to compare him to marlon brando is absurd.

The only way to find out if Leo measures up is to get him to do A Streetcar Named Desire.

As long as he doesn't make a version of 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' in his twilight years, Leo's alright by me.

Exactly!
One thing that works against DiCaprio inmy book is his young look. He looks like a teenager even though he is almost 40!

the best thing this guy ever did was try to shed his teen girls pin-up type image and start appearing in some great films. not sure that he could carry a film by himself, but does extremely well opposite other big names.
although having said that, i don't think he's anywhere near the calibre of pacino, de niro, nicholson, keitel, hoffman or brando.

His true acting skills would have shown, but wouldnt have gotten to work with such great directors if he hadnt done titanic. The fact that we are here talking about him today in such a manner shows to me taht he has made the right choice.

only film I've enjoyed of Di Caprio is Blood Diamond, he's a good actor but that's as far as I'd go in my praise for him.

I wouldn't go calling him a 'great' just yet. He is a very, very good actor who has given a number of great performances. He is on his way there. He could probably do with a break from working with Scorsese for a while and perhaps do something a little edgier rather than so many big, prestigious films, but he has chosen well and he has carved out a fine career so far.
De Niro has done little of interest in years now.
Pacino has spent most of the past decade on auto-pilot
Walken's price for his strange sort of fame is that he will never be taken seriously again. In fact I doubt if he can ever play a character again othjer than Christopher Walken.
Depp is now an A-lister, which is a pity. He did a lot of interesting stuff just burrowing away quietly out of sight for most of his career. Those days are now over, sadly.

I'm pretty sure I know enough.
If they can salvage something from the wreckage of the "Citizen Brando" production I'll be surprised.

Depp is one 'a' lister that deserves his status. For years he's been offered a list parts (since his 21 jump street days) but has declined because he likes to pick obscure parts. His films are big nowadays because of the respect he's earnt. I think you'll find he still picks his own roles and has not sold out.

I have no doubt that he has not sold out. But I reckon doing the two contractually-forced sequels to the Pirates films, whilst boosting his bank account, would have felt like a visit to the dentist to him.

I don't know really, although i didn't like the film i think he enjoyed playing that character because he based it on keith richards.

Does it matter that Deniro and Pacino have cruised through the last 10 years.
There in their 60s now most people in another career would be retired.

No, I don't blame them as their early work easily cements their standing. But it is sorta sad to see them going throught the motions and cruising on such goodwill.

Superb actor. To be honest i thought his babyface would mean he wouldnt be able to perform the roles he has, but thats a sign of how great he is.
Very versatile too. There are other actors who are critically acclaimed such as Tom Hanks who are nothing on him.

leo = none
while they've both done some fine work (and both some crud), i think hanks is clearly superior, and not just for the extra praise he gets either

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn't selling out?

Nope it wasn't. Although i didn't like it he chose that role because he wanted to play with the character weirdness. I don't think the film worked but you're kidding yourself if you think he chose that as a sell out.
He can get any part he wants, if he was going to sell out he'd name a higher price than charlie and the chocolate factory.
Because he's so respected everything he does gets media attention which is why we hear more about his films. On top of that other big name actors want to work with him... Johnny Depp is pure. :thumbsu:
