View Full Version : Katich signs with NSW
Originally posted on baggygreen.com
New South Wales has landed a major recruiting coup overnight with confirmation that Simon Katich will be leaving his native Western Australia to join the Blues next season.
Katich, 26, has closed two weeks of negotiations with New South Wales officials by opting to sign a one-year contract with his new team. His decision was understood to have been influenced significantly by the opportunity to join his girlfriend, who is based in Sydney.
Methinks his decision was influenced by the increased likelihood of representing Australia if you play for New South Wales.

This could be a good thing for Simon Katich who will have more opportunities to develop his game against spin bowling and on different types of wickets which may in turn help him develop into a better player and give him more of a chance to play for Australia in the future.
Cheers!!

Simon Katich is an overrated dud
Maybe he got a nudge from the national selectors who have decided rather than pick an Australian team of predominantly NSW players, just put the whole damn team in there!

Sell-out, Cop-out, Walk-out.
I was bloody angry when I heard that he had done a runner on us. Although can you blame him with the feuding between the players and the WACA last year, old urban legend that unless you play for NSW you wont get a look in, stand out batter for NSW.
Just hope that Hussey, Nichelson dont follow him.
Is Richard Chee Quee tradable?

Considering the preferential treatment given to NSW players like Stuart Clark, Nathan Bracken and Brett Lee over players such as Adam Dale and Damien Fleming, would you blame him?

Mike Hussy and Matty Nicholson both turned down offers to join the Blues (whats wrong with them, can't they develope they're own players) so thats a positive I 'spose, but still very pi$$ed that they stole Katich.
On the other hand looks as though Fleming is coming our way, it will give us a chance to play Shaun Marsh (who broke all Katich's batting records in WA junior cricket) and look for Scotty Meullaman (spelling) to step up this year.

For once Hoggy, I agree with you.
And like Squeak said, he is now a dead cert to play for Australia this summer, regardless of how many runs he makes.

you seem to forget that nicholson is from NSW, and so is gilchrist for that matter. i'd say the shoe is on the other foot with respect to WA stealing NSW's best players. i dont think Katich is quite the player Gilly is

Stuart Maguill is a West Aussie if you didn't already know. They aren't really state teams anymore as they're now made up with a majority of of interstate players.

having state players play in their state of origin would be so much more exciting and its what the pura cup needs. i follow NSW but if half of our side consists of imports, why would i follow them, if NSW were to win the sheild, we cant exactly claim thats because our state nurtures the best cricketers, michael bevan is an iffy one, since he comes from the ACT. but he plays for manly, so youve gotta love him!

Too true, and I think we won here with gilly.....;)
So players migrate to NSW to take advantage of selector state bias, but NSW players who migrate to other states are picked because of selector state bias?
Make up your minds, it can't be both.
Might add to that, during the 90s the NSW batsmen Taylor, Slater, S.Waugh, M.Waugh and the migrant to WA Gilly have all averaged 40+ (some 50+) throughout careers that aren't exactly short.
Bevan lost his place in the Test team but is probably the #1 ODI batsman in the world. Bevan and M.Waugh spent several years at domestic level before even being given a sniff nationally.
The NSW bowlers McGrath and B.Lee have both taken a stack of wickets at good averages, and McGrath has been arguably the most consistent performer in Australian cricket over the last 6-8 years. MacGill has racked up better pro-rata stats than Warne, but is not preferred in a head to head comparison. Bias my arse.
So which one of these biased selections has been lucky to have an international career?
