Power assistant gets Dees job

August 31, 2007

MELBOURNE has announced Dean Bailey will coach the AFL club for the next three years.
Bailey, currently an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, beat current Melbourne caretaker Mark Riley, Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, former Fremantle coach Chris Connolly and Hawthorn assistant Damien Hardwick for the job.
The Demons board met for more than three hours last night before appointing Bailey.
Bailey, 40, played 53 games under Sheedy at Essendon in two stints, from 1986-1989 and 1991-1992.
He was initially considered a rank outsider for the job, but immediately impressed in his interviews. A ringing endorsement from Power coach Mark Williams was also thought to have been a decisive factor.
Riley took over as caretaker coach in late June when Neale Daniher left the club.
Melbourne issued a short media release early this afternoon, confirming Bailey's appointment. The announcement had not been expected until next week.
Melbourne put the five candidates through a game simulation exercise as part of the selection process.
After he retired as a player, Bailey became a development coach at Essendon in 2000 and joined Power under Mark Williams in 2002.
He was involved in Essendon's 2000 premiership and Port's solitary AFL flag in 2004.
Another former Port assistant, Alastair Clarkson, was also a surprise choice when he took over as Hawthorn senior coach two years ago.
Williams confirmed Bailey was leaving Power at a concurrent press conference.
"I'm not sure if I'm here to announce Dean as the Melbourne coach but he is,'' Williams said.
"We talked to him this morning, it's a great appointment by them and he's very worthy of the job.
"We're very happy for him but obviously it means he doesn't coach with us anymore.''
Williams said the club had groomed former captain Matthew Primus to replace Bailey as coach of the ruck and midfield divisions for the forthcoming AFL finals series.
Riley, who was one of the last five on the shortlist for the permanent job, said he was disappointed not to get the position.
"I'm a competitive bugger, I like winning so that's disappointing,'' Riley said.
"But the whole experience has been fantastic, the nine-week experience culminating this week.''
Riley said the Demons were a much better side than their four-win record this season indicated, and he predicted a great improvement next season.
"Have a look at our injury list for the year, it's just quite incredible numbers ... compared to every other team.
"I think for Melbourne supporters and Melbourne Football Club they can look forward to 2008 with great optimism and that's why I was so keen on winning the position.''
Riley, who is contracted to the Demons for the next year, said he was likely to stay on as an assistant under Bailey.
He said he was not surprised at Bailey winning the job despite having a lower profile than many of the other candidates.
"You saw the field of the last five candidates - there was a myriad of experiences and ages - for Dean Bailey to win that you would have to say ... he's obviously a very, very special man to come out number one in that pool,'' he said

Rhode is not an assistant coach. He's on the operations side of things. He seems to be doing a good job at that. Port know not to let him near the coaches box (or at least talk when in there :p )

Summary -
Jason Cripps - forward coach
Primus - ruck coach, taking over Bailey's job for the finals
Adam Kingsley -defensive coach
Darren Trevena & Stephen Williams - mostly working with the younger players
