There is no more ex Fitzroy players playing in the AFL after former Roy Boy Chris Johnson announced his retirement, effective after the game against Geelong.

A sad day for Lions, Roy and AFL fans throughout the nation.

Long live the Roys, despite no longer having an ex player in the competition.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

There are still memories there for the roys in ex-players being coaches and administrators at clubs...

Its sad to see the last player hanging up his boots.

Good luck to him and all the best for his future.

I knew this day would arrive eventually but I never realised how sad it would make me feel. No more Royboys running around. Ever. It's stirring up some emotions, which is strange since I thought everything had been sorted. Feels awkward and emotional, like meeting the ex unexpectedly, years after she ripped my heart out for someone else. :(:(:(

who were the other fitzroy players drafted to the brisbane lions at the end of 1996? was johnson the only one that had any real lastability with the new lions?

For me personally Johnno was the last link between Fitzroy and the AFL as it is nowadays. To me there is now no reason to be interested in the AFL anymore.

Thanks for the memories Johnno, you always brought a smile to my face when you attempted your weekly mark of the year in your early years.

Brad Boyd
Simon Hawking
Jarrod Molloy
John Barker
Nick Carter
Shane Clayton
Scott Bamford

Molloy played 61 games for the Brisbane Lions between 1997 & 2000 & kicked 104 goals, but none of the others hung around there long.

The Lions also took Matthew Primus, but immediately on-traded him to Port Adelaide.

I heard on SEN last night when Martin Pike was on with Finey he was about to say there's another "Fitzroy player" still running around in the AFL. Then I got home and it sounded like he wasn't going to reveal it for a little while. I assumed he was talking about Daniel Ward because I remember hearing he played for Fitzroy Reserves (but never the Seniors). Is this who Pikey would've been talking about?

Barker had about 2 very good seasons with the Hawks, but then ran out of steam and had too many injuries.

Also another Fitzroy player still going around is Ben Holland was drafted to you guys in 1994 but never played a game we traded him from you at the end of 1995 for picks 16 and 32 played with us until 2003 when we traded him to melbourne for pick 20. Is 30 this year and with his latest shoulder injury and inconsistent form for melbourne over the past 4 years might not be kept on next year.

Josh Mahoney (Coll/WB/PA) also played reserves for Fitzroy in 1995, but sadly like Johnno has retired this year as well.
