We have players such as Johnston, West, Darcy and recently Smith from pre 1996 drafts. We have the Murphies, Gia's, McMahons, Gilbees etc post 1999 but where are the players from 1996 to 1998 that should be at their peek, aged around 27 to 29 years old.
Wallet went for short term glory by trading for ready mades and only Eagleton survives, in my opinion this has really killed us in the past couple of years, especially this year.
Once the 1999 batch and beyond get more experience, we may start to look like a top four side.

If we had have beaten Adelaide in 1997 and won the flag we wouldnt care. I think he did the right thing at the time. We were a genuine contender and he tried to have a big crack over those years.
Agree with 1954, although it is hurting us now.
I reckon you may right .... but our non drafting of strong bodied (tall) types over a long period of time is whar has probably killed us the most.
Interestingly, Wallace seems to be doing the same at Richmond.
No offense but why not retitle the thread to
Did the fact we didn't have 20/20 hindsight screw us in 1996 - 1998 come back to bite us....
Gee.
If you really want to get into this just have look at the Rhode trades...irritating thing is...I didn't want Rawlins, Koops, Street, Morgan and Veale. Comforting thing is they are nearly all gone...and Kepler Bradley is pus and N Brown broke his leg....very sad and petty....but
THAT WHAT THREADS LIKE THESE ARE...NOT CONSTRUCTIVE NOT HOPE BRINGING...JUST DESPAIR AND HAND WRINGING...!!

This is a myth. Are Simmonds, Pattison, Graham, Riewoldt, Hughes, Thursfield, McGuane and Polak midgets? We also had Richo and Schultz. I know that a couple are skinny, but it's extremely hard to find strong bodied 17 year olds that aren't fat! At least they are tall. Even our mids like Deledio (188cm) JON (over 190cm now) are not tiny.

I think it's more wasting picks that hurt us.
A guy like Brown leaves our club and a few years on we effectively have nothing to show for it. IMO that sort of gear hurts the club as much as anything.
