GOOD EFFORT!!!
Even though we lost I was clapping like a nut praising them for their good efforts in the final term.
Really sad. Spike was visibly upset, so was Jim.
Lucas was outstanding. AND THE JACKET WAVE FROM SHEEDS!

I didn'et get to see any of it. I'm so sad at the moment :(
A little cap off, I didn't see it either but was told by my cousin as to what happened.
WCE presented James Hird with a signed WCE/Bombers jacket half half and interviewed him etc.
Most of the bombers players broke down in tears, not sure if sheeds was crying. WCE crowd gave him an amazing send off :thumbsu:.
Hird didn't go out not trying that's for sure, was incredible.
It's sad day for football today

Although we lost.
Im sure Hird and Sheeds would of rather to lose like that playing an awesome quarter of footy like that then win by 50 points.
Top effort from the boys in the last quarter.
Specially to Lucas!!!
In the end it was better for us to lose because now we have the best opportunity to pick the best young kids coming through.
It was an awesome move from Sheeds. As soon as he put Lucas in the forward line, he dominated. Top stuff!

The jacket was actually given to sheedy.
Darren Glass gave Hirdy the match ball.

Awesome final qtr - just wish we'd held up in the 2nd.
And Sheeds was touched by the jacket presentation - wishing them luck before that perfect salute!
Lucas was unreal - they certainly weren't all easy goals
Hird's 34 possessions and freak goal were a great effort - but his time has come
McPhee and Lovett were excellent, and Laycock really gave his all
just wish we'd showed that effort last week

I'd rather that we won this week than last week. Even if I was at the game last week.

As supporters, all we want is for our team to give their best effort, the first half was sad, but thanks to the team for playing the game out, I all most had a heart attack , but to many turnovers cost as in the first half.
Lucas should only be played up forward.
Laycock should be traded, he was hammered today again.
Hille was good and also done some good work around the ground.

I didnt see the game, but im guessing pretty emotional. But its the story of year isnt it, why did we wait until the final quarter to fire up, did sheeds just say got out and play direct footy again, or did hird give the final quarter address?
Does west coast reflect us in 2001 will they limp into the grand final?

If we fail to achieve much in the finals, it won't be because of injury's. Lot's to come back next week.
And congrats on an amazing comeback, Lucas is awsome, and your team has geniune heart.

Keep Laycock. He can go forward and always gives his all. He and Hille just need to be consistant. The problem with what Sheedy had to do with Lucas at times (play him back) is simply a list problem. Shouldn't see that again from the next Essendon coach. Our team has all the attributes up forward and down back. The problem is the mid field. Again this match shows the inconsistancey that has plauged us.

I sent an Essendon supporting mate a message at 3/4 time asking whether Sheedy could pull off one final miracle. I soon regretted it, and was somewhat worried once you got under five goals, it seemed like destiny, the one final twist in the tale.
Hopefully no Sheeds and Hird will mean a more positive, winning era for West Coast against the Bombers. It won't be the same tho. The game is worse off.

Makes you wonder why he was at CHB all last week.
I also wondered that last week, played down back on Reivolt when he is our best/second best forward, weird.
And moving him forward in the second was not a master move, he should have been there from the start, we fell down at half forward about 10 to 15 times in the first quarter and still no move. Common sense.
Great game by Hird, a champion like him desrerves to go out on top. Not many play their last season with 3 or 4 best on grounds and play their last game close to if not best on ground.
Thanks for the memories Hirdy and Sheeds.
Thanks to all the WC supporters for their honest and kind words. Our two clubs really do have a special love/hate bond I think, mainly due to KS.
Well what an emotional day! For Jim to play so well in his last game is so amazing, but we are all used to seeing amazing from that man. He will be missed beyond belief. The thought of never seeing him play again is actually quite overwhelming. :(
As for Sheeds....he has been Essendon for virtually my entire life! I remember just starting to take interest in Essendon when I was about 12, in 1981. Catching the train from Ringwood to Windy Hill with 2 of my bomber mates every home game. Sheedy built us from also-rans to a primal force in such a short space of time. You could really feel the vibe of the place change. Everything he did seemed so considered and motivated. You had the feeling he was in control, even if we lost! How will he ever be replaced??  :(
BUT, now we have a new era beginning. What will the great Essendon have in store for us in the future? I think it will be exciting, but maybe a little less colorful without KS and JH.
Thanks for great memories for such a large part of all our lives. :thumbsu:

far out...so close!!!
lucas, the most astounding quarter id ever seen...
goal, goal, goal, goal, etc

to THINK HE NEARLY WON US THE GAME (Was vvery doable)
oh the woe. cant blame him at all though - did a hirdy, one of the most senstation quarters aynone has ever played. far out!
so proud of the boys this weeek though!!!
definetely shed a few for sheeds and HIRDY (will never forget him) absolute legend of a bloke, and the best footballer ive seen with voss
what a sad sad sad sad day this is. that ceremony will be with me forever.
cant imagine supporting without hird and sheeds, redefines END OF AN ERA
what a fairtytale it could of been? but in the end...so proud of the final term, to send them off in style

Well done to the Essendon supporters at the ground, f***ing loud as.
If you were playing any other team today I would've been screaming for you aswell.
Geez Hirdy knows when to turn it on; 34 touches!
I felt bad when they were playing 'Eagle Rock' at the end. It just didn't seem appropriate. I would've preferred the Bombers song over that.
Anyway, best of luck for next year.
Great day to be at subi to cheer on WC, Hirdy & Sheeds. The bombers have lost two of the all time greats and it was a privieldge to be at their last game for the bombers. Hird is a guy who all suppoerters can admire and what he produced today shows he is one of the great inspriational leaders in Australian sport - he will go down with the likes of Eels, Waugh, Ponting as one of the really great sportsmen and leaders this country has produced. And Sheeds - he is of the old school and a legend of the VFL/AFL. He gave many west australians footballers a shot at VFL/AFL and will always be remembered with great admiration here in The West. All the best to both in the next stage of their lives.
I'm not one to tear up but alas, if it's alright for McVeigh, it's alright for me...
I'm gunna miss seeing Hirdy on the field so much.
He has been an absolute hero. My childhood(ish)(teenhood?) hero, an absolute legend.
I can't imagine seeing better than him, his class, his grace, poise, everything.
Every time he touched the ball, you knew that he was a chance at doing something great with it. A smooth handball, precise kick, inspirational goal, whatever. He's a star.
And man, his final goal is going to be replayed for a while... what an effort!
What a star!
You'll be missed.
Heh, if only Lucus didn't ruin Hirds best on ground performance with that last quarter... :P
What a gutsy effort by your team this afternoon! Very entertaining, was holding my breath for a last minute bombers win to send off Sheeds and Hirdy in style, but not to be :(. I cant believe we will never see Hird play again, it's going to take a bit of getting used to. What a legend!:thumbsu:
Sheeds and Hird, both such fantastic ornaments of the game. Gentleman Jim, all class have always just loved watching him play, can't really believe we won't see him out there. Sheeds master tactician and real warmth of character. How rich Essendon is to have had these two in your Club, just won't be the same. Eagles handled their farewell with real class also. Good effort all round.

I was really proud of the effort shown by the Bombers today.
(Don't want to get into a loser mentality, but) I wasn't even that angry at the boys when we were 40 points down! I felt like they were trying really, really hard...didnt go into their shells...kept running, in what looked like hot conditions...against a team that just couldn't miss in front of the goals!
And then the last quarter - love ya scotty!! So understated even after he slotted goal number 5,6,7...that's a champion bloke.
In summary, that is what I want my team to do every week - just give it everything they have got. If they don't have sublime skills, don't get upset, at least keep battling and leave everything you have got on the field. I will then be satisfied and proud as a bombers supporter.
In general, I feel that Essendon has done that for most of this year - lots of effort, but lacking polish. So well done boys, enjoy your holidays and rest up for further improvement and another assault next year!

After being in a bad position, just want to say thanks for your team fighting their hardest to take themselves back into the game. Lucas with 7 in a quarter is ridiculous.
Digging deep to fight back is what i'd say all fans were hoping the bombers would do, most notably for hird and sheedy.
And also for port's percentage scenario with eagles :)
Feel very priveleged to have been at the game today...
My brother's a Bomber supporter and we were orphans where we were sitting...But it was good watching your guys coming back and their supporters getting quieter and quieter, until the whinging started. ;)
...and if Lucas kicked that last goal?
James Hird...nuff said

Can't agree with that
It was the sign to send Chick of the ground for his 250th which most Eagles fans where i was sitting really appreciated.
The post match presentations were great with hardly any fans leaving till after Chick, Hird and Sheeds were carried off the ground, which would have been a good 15 minutes after the game finished.
Sheedy was at also at his irreravent best adding a bit of humour at the end.

I'm not one to tear up but alas, if it's alright for McVeigh, it's alright for me...
i got a little choked up when they gave Hird and Sheedy that tribute on the bigscreen with highlights of their career, especially with that song "When We Were Kings" playing in the background. I cant remember footy without these 2 blokes. In fact, Sheedy has been coach since before I was born.
Going to be strange seeing the bombers coached by someone else, and not having Hird there. The expression "End of an era" gets bandied around a bit, but never has it been more truer than yesterday at Subi Oval with the sun setting in the background as those 2 got chaired off field.
Scotty yet again showed his supreme mental strength and nearly did it for Hird off his own boot.
He's not the fastest, never been the most skilled...but when u want a goal from 50 on an angle..(the closer to the b-line the better) when the pressure is on,theres no better.
If we think its sad seeing Hirdy off, wait untill the next few years whan we have to say goodbye to the 3 other superstars of this club...Lloyd,Lucas,Fletcher.
Great game Jim.
WC crowd were fantastic...hats off to ya's..still hate ya's but;)
i am going to sound like a killjoy but one quarter of effort is barely sufficient especially after last week and a weakened opposition that we were playing. Great to see Hird and Sheedy leave with dignity. Not great to see Dodoro everywhere when we are coming up to a pivotal draft for our footy club. Still with Sheeds gone I guess he can see the writing on the wall.
Brilliant game, Bombers! That final quarter was an awesome display - Hird, you're a true champion. Lucas, best wishes for getting over that case of leather poisoning!
The Bombers always grow a third leg when playing the Eagles. I couldn't believe how little respect many people were giving you guys. I for one never thought that it would be a sure thing and wasn't anywhere near breathing easily at 3/4 time. Hats of to you all.
I thought the jacket was a nice touch too. Hopefully Sheeds will hang it with pride somewhere as he's started a tradition that will be carried on for many years. Personally, I'd like to have seen the Eagles players, out of respect, form an honour guard to see Sheedy and Hird off. But all in all, I think it was a memorable send off.

Great comeback by the boys. That effort shows the respect the team has for Hirdy and Sheeds.
Watching from Sydney, the fantastic after game ceremony was very emotional. I can't believe the Melbourne fans without foxtel couldn't see this.
And thanks to the Eagles Club and fans both at the ground and posting on here. The respect you have for our Club and it's legends is reciprocated (with the exception of Karl Langdon):thumbsu:
Good luck in the finals

6PR talkback today was flooded with irate footy fans (wc and Dons)livid with the decision to chop into Sheeds' speech..a disgrace.
