Galant effort from Scotty and the Dons. We really stepped up for hirdy and Sheeds but just fell short.

1 Sep 2007, 19:52
Lucky Sheeds played him in defence for the entire game last week.

Really you could say that he hasn't done quite enough to warrant AA selection this year but averaged over the last two years there haven't been many better and it would be a travesty if he didn't get an AA jumper.

What a magnificent performance.

Sheedy starting him in defence and playing him there last week shows why it's time to give up coaching.

There are few better matchwinners in the game than Scotty Lucas. That was just incredible today.

Couldn't believe it. How could a player do so little for the game then do so much especially in the first 10 minutes of the last quarter he got 6 goals. Makes you wonder how much mental the game really is.

To think some people were calling him past it. Lucas is awesome and there are good signs for the bombers next season. Hird for coach.

Sean.
1 Sep 2007, 20:09
It was an awesome move from Sheeds. As soon as he put Lucas in the forward line, he dominated. Top stuff!

Tough to pick him. Brown has certainly been better. Pavlich has been more consistent. Franklin has been more sensational. How many CHFs can you pick?

His first half of the season was AA standard. He has fallen awa a little bit over the second half of the year, but today's last quarter was unbelievable.

The only other player I can remember kicking 7 in a term was Sumich versus the Bulldogs at the WACA in a 130 point win back in '91, but Lucas did it with the game in the balance.

Lance Uppercut
1 Sep 2007, 20:30
one of the most dominant quarters I've ever seen

You could see he was doing it for Hirdy he pretty much single-handedly gave Hird a dignified send-off :thumbsu:

Too bad for WC that Lucas is not retiring as well:D Always plays well against us...

He did. Relatively easy - he was off balance though. I don't think you could ask much more though

SCOT LUCAS WHEN ON SONG HIS A STAR. I was at the game my hear was pouding when every time he went near the ball. It was simply breathtaking to watch he put on a clinic. The eagles better sharpen up, if we play like that against Port or the Cats we will be GAWN.

I have been going to the football for 30 years and I hate Essendon. I have never seen a performance like that. Buddy kicked 5 in a quarter against Essendon this year. I have seen Jason kick 5 and 6 in the first and second quarter against Richmond on his way to 17.

I was barracking for Essendon to win the game and I would have loved to see him kick his 8th for the quarter.

His final term was just sensational - whoever coaches us next year, please keep this man forward.

I don't think that Geelong or Port have any dominant forwards that could do what Lucas did.

Expected something like that after he was moved to CHF after quarter time.

Well maybe not.

Best quarter seen since Nathan Brown a couple of years ago

Did anyone find out what the most goals for a single quarter was?

UpForGrabs
2 Sep 2007, 01:00
Was there today (a blessing in itself) and watching Lucas do what he did in the last quarter was a privilege. It wasn't just that he kicked 7 goals in the quarter, it's where he kicked them from. These weren't little handpasses over the top to him in the goalsquare, they were genuine 55m kicks from both boundaries, they were kicks made after taking the strong mark.

The only thing that seems to be a shame is that the day really belonged to Kevin Sheedy and James Hird (and rightfully so). Let's hope that Lucas' efforts in the 4th quarter aren't pushed to the back of the head and consigned to memory because of the fanfare of the day.

PS: I think Kelvin Templeton kicked 8 in a quarter on the way to 15 one day out at the Western Oval. Pretty sure that's the record.

Awesome effort. After seeing your comeback, I wanted you guys to beat them (oh gosh, a Carlton supporter wanting Essendon to win - has the world gone mad?)... because I have a lot of respect for Hird and Sheedy.

Grave Danger
2 Sep 2007, 01:48
He was legged as he was going for that 8th goal. And then up the other end Fletcher(?) got away with a throw and the ball spilled for that arsey goal by Staker that sealed the game. Sheedy and Hird (and footy folklore) wuz robbed by the umpires...

The last time a player has kicked 7 in a quarter was Peter Sumich against Footscray in 1993. Went on to kick 13 for the game I believe.

Maybe he performs better if he's starved of opportunities? All that built up goalkicking talent.
