Busy weekend of checking out how the many players spotted during the year handle the pressure of finals.:D
That's why it's so important that even as a development competition the TAC Cup maintains its structure of playing finals and for a Premiership Cup.
It's great to see who stands up and plays well under the pressure of finals on good grounds in hopefully good conditions.
My tips: Northern, Calder, Eastern & Western - no metro bias btw.

That isn't how it works. Winner of 5 v 8 will be playing the loser of 1 v 4 in week 2. Calder cannot be that team.

That means if Western Win they will play the loser of Power V Knights and if they can beat them they will then play the winner of Cannons V Bushrangers. As for Geelong v Eastern they will play the loser of Cannons V Bushrangers. Will be a very exciting week of finals. :thumbsu:

If Murray win I think they will win the premiership this year. Calder will be very keen to avenge the thumping they received a couple of weeks ago though.

A couple of sizeable upsets with Eastern beating Geelong and more significantly North Ballarat beating Western. Massive disappointment for Western after being in the Top 4 most of the season.
I wasn't down at MC Labour Park today (I was at a much gayer footy game) but I'll be there tomorrow.

Fifth may have been the easiest run in the finals if the side that finished there was capable of beating the under-rated Rebels. First the Rebels were disregarded as a genuine finals team with everybody pumping up the Chargers' tyres. Granted the Rebels only won eight games but Oakleigh could only manage seven wins. Hardly the premiership material that many were claiming. Now the Western Jets have blown their shot at glory despite having the 'easiest' of runs in the finals'. North Ballarat have been on the verge of elimination from the finals race for the past six weeks and are still there. Maybe, just maybe, they are doing something right.
Yes, the Rebels probably have over-achieved and will probably bow out of the finals next week but they have sure surprised more than a few both within the TAC Cup system and here in the font of all footy knowledge that is Big Footy.

Yeah, going great guns with the tipping.
It was a weird day, Western started off dominantly in the first match, sharing the goals around and heading into quarter time with a reasonable lead. They came out a totally different side in the second term - for whatever reason - and when their lead was passed midway through the second quarter that was it and from quarter time to 3/4 time the Rebels scored 12 goals to 2 - totally dominating the game. A very disappointing way for the Jets to bow out - 6 days ago they played for top spot on the ladder, today they went down to a side who nearly lost to the wooden spooners last week. Shows how even the season has been in the TAC Cup - everyone can win on their day.
The second game was probably even stranger, the Falcons were asleep early going into quarter time 43 points down. They just chipped away at it all day rather than making one or two strong challenges, but when the Falcons got to within 11 points at about the 23 minute mark of the last quarter it looked like a win was still possible, but a quarter that went for less than 25 minutes took a few by surprise and that was it.
So 7th and 8th sneak through, probably creating a couple of less appealing matches for next weekend.

Disappointed Geelong bowed out. Seems a few of their potential draftees didnt do a great deal. Brother was there and thought Dangerfield was pretty quiet.
Anybody shed any light on Wards game.

Incredible.
Incredible.
Kicked 6 and gave a couple away. A ray of light in an otherwise underwhelming day.
Footy surely is the game of inches. If Cook hadn't played on and been caught 25 metres from goal last week at Ballarat when Sandy was 1 pt down with 25 seconds to go, Oakleigh would have been playing yesterday. Now the Rats have taken a great step forward. Congrats to both Ballarat and Eastern.

Dangerfield was ok. He had to be used in too many different roles and didnt get a lot of time in the middle. He had to go into defence a few times .
Ward played easily the best game i have seen him play. He lead up well but also took a few very good contested marks. Just kept moving around and providing an option.
At the end of the day it was Rangers hardness around the contested footy that won them the game. Geelong looked good at times when the game opened up and they could play free flowing footy but when Rangers little men turned it into a hard contest they where well on top.
Kicked 6 and gave a couple away. A ray of light in an otherwise underwhelming day.
Ward was superb effectively as a CHF. He is a very different player now to at the start of the year and really does look like one of the few contenders for that tall ruck-rover role. He might not be Jordan Lewis-like at the moment but he will be next year if not drafted. Should be a top-20 pick now.

... and Oakleigh would have had the beating of all 4 of those sides yesterday. They should be very angry with themselves for not getting it.
I thought Western were going to win by 80 after the first quarter. The Ballarat showed them too much respect and the coaches got too clever with their match-ups. Bell in the backline, Cheney up front, Radley at FF, Tickner out of the game at FB.
Once Ballarat put their team back into their preferred positions and played the game on their own terms they ran over Western who just never responded. Western barely had any moves of their own. Banner, Ward, Morris, Black were barely unsighted in the midfield.
In the end none of the Western prime-movers really gave a yelp. Banner, Morris, Black, Lyons, Cartelli, Kennedy all chose the same day to turn in some of their worst performances of the year. In the end half of them were tagging.
Jordan Robbins was good for Western. Ward as a CHF. Jayden Post is an improved player and did OK. Lunardi probably had his best game of the year.
BOG for mine was Clayton Hinkley who burnt off a reasonable player in Kennedy. Used the ball so well and kept going all day. Suban was good early but copped heavy tags. Nick Peters was good but was a bit so-so with his ball use. Bryn Weadon out of the back-pocket played the quarter-back role superbly. Grant Bell was the one who turned the match when he went forward. Ryan McKenzie was the other good one, hadn't seen much of him before now.
In the Geelong-Eastern game. It was all over at quarter time. Geelong won the next three quarters but it didn't matter.
Rory Sloane was the killer. Destroyed them at the stoppages with good help from Brad Jones. Geelong had their match-ups wrong and Trent Zomer killed Andrew Scott in the first to set up the win.
Mid-way through the second Geelong came back and it was all lead by Dangerfield. He single handly turned the game around at the stoppages and brought some teammates with him notably Donahue off HBF. Scott was good when released to a flank. Barham did OK. Hornsey beat most guys he played on. Ayce Cordy was close to the best big man on show. Great mobility, agility, balance. He is a huge prospect.
Did the Falcons lose Kane Smith early? He was unsighted. Hunter did next to nothing until the last 10 minutes. Mugavin was stuck in a back-pocket. After leading the Falcons back into the game, Dangerfield was taken off the ball and returned to HBF. Curnow did little. Lynch only popped-up in the last 10 minutes. Geelong's midfield did not show-up ready to play.
Zac Ward was the difference in the end. Getting the goals for Eastern to pad the lead. Jack Steven got a hold of him in the end, but that cost Geelong a good onballer. Gysberts is going to be great. Not elligable for this draft, not elligable for the NEXT draft, and already in the top-3 at Eastern. Lobbe rucked almost unchanged and did well to nullify Cordy, Stavenuiter, Scott and Henderson at various times. Cunningham had a great first quarter and faded.
Falcons might have won if Henderson was able to kick more than 35 metres. He really should have finished with 5.

Only saw the Western V Nth Ballarat game.
Nth Ballarat were disciplined, and Western undisciplined. Too many handballs under pressure cost Western heaps. They had no answers to Nth Ballarat when they started running and kicking long. They used the switch well, and brought the ball into the middle early and always seemed to find someone to take an easy uncontested mark and drive the ball in long inside 50.
Nth Ballarats midfield ran both ways hard. Suban played a lone hand early, but then faded in and out of the game, but thats when thier other on-ballers started working hard.
In the last quarter, Ward almost single-handedly got Western another week of finals, but Nth Ballarat were able to choke the supply coming from the midfield with the final few clearances.
Ward and Robbins were the best for Western
Hinkley, Suban and Bell were the best for Nth Ballarat

Dislocated patella shouldn't affect his draft position, I wouldn't think. Not being able to play TAC Cup finals might though.

Smith started really well with around five touch's in the first 6 or 7 minutes but he copped a pretty heavy front on hit and had to come off. Didnt find much of the footy once he came back on. Had a few kicks in the last quarter but that was about it.

Very true, I agree with all of that. The way they switched it across the centreline all day, then drilled a pass into their forwards (despite the fact the Jets had dropped numbers back) was very well done. Almost as if they'd done a lot of work on it during the week.
Nth Ballarat's strength is probably the midfield where they can rotate Suban, Cheney, Peters, Hinkley among a few lesser lights. They haven't got a true ruckman - yet still seem to win plenty of clearances.
They're by far the worst attacking side in the competition all year - yesterday was their highest score of the season and only the second time all year they've kicked over 100 points in a match. They probably don't have a player among the top dozen in the competitions goalkicking either.
They'll most likely be light on for draftees - and Austin who is arguably their best chance didnt play yesterday.
As Sezzac said they were lucky to sneak through last week, but they've earnt it and deserve a second final. I still think they'll cop a flogging next week but with a lot against them they have managed to achieve a finals victory - something they couldn't manage last year with a side who went through unbeaten during the season and had 6 draftees (including four in the top 20).
Disappointing the Jets weren't able to register their first finals victory in a while, but they improved a lot this year. Seeing blokes like Post grow from a fringe player to a reliable defender who took on highly rated forwards and beat them (barring one disaster last week), Lyons improved all the time, Ward popped up and is off to the draft camp, Kennedy similar and is off to screening, and theres a few there who look exciting for next year headed by Banner. I'm sure they've earnt a lot of respect in their local area so their year hasnt been a disaster either.

Dead set what sort of halfwit takes their dog to a game of footy at Optus Oval (hardly a place you'd take the pooch for a walk) and lets it off the leash?
The bloody thing ran onto the field three times all up, but the second one which stopped play for a couple of minutes was the funniest. Seeing a few players blot after the thing and the umpire and one player nealing on their knees clicking their fingers trying to get it to come over to them!

A couple of those guys arent true defenders anyway, but I know what you're getting at. Take out Laidler cos hes not really in the same category and McKenna who I think is more a forward. Fellas like Saker, Dulic, McDonald and Post are good honest players who do their job - they probably don't catch the eye like Hurley or Kangars do with their athleticism - and the fact none of them are going to draft camp or screening probably reflects that. But someone like Post as example has probably taken on 4 or 5 key forwards this year who are going to draft camp and only slipped up once. Not bad for someone who in my book was frustrating and struggled to find an ideal position in the first quarter of the season, which was the reason for my comment.

Extremely disappointing for the Jet boys, and I agree they were a completely different side come 2nd quarter. They had such a successful year it would have been great to see them win a final, they looked pretty heart broken after the game, and I have to admit I felt for the boys too, I really hope like footyman said they have earnt some respect in the competition because they sure as hell deserve it from going from a 3-15 season in 2005 to a 12-6 season in 2007, its a shame they dropped those two games against Dandenong and Power, they would have definately had more confidence going into the finals with a double chance.

Post looked all at sea in the first quarter of the year at CHF as you suggest. His last few weeks have been very solid. He held down CHB well. I certainly see more upside in him than some others. He might be a good candidate for Western to invite back for a year as an overage kid. He has played a bit of footy but needs another year and as a December birthday only just dips out on another year by right.

OK, a lot has been said of Cotchin and Veszpremi's game, but seriously, Totino was also fantastic today, especially in the first quarter. I really want him to grow! Is 5cm asking too much? Meredith also won heaps of the ball and was pretty good with it. Didn't mind Stanton's game either. I reckon 16 year old Tindarra Hood showed a fair bit. Not that many touches but his pressure was fantastic. The kid worked his arse off. Maybe I'm just a sucker for midgets from Northern. :p
Not many stood out for Gippsland and I can't think of anyone that put in a four quarter performance. Blair started well but faded out dramatically. Hall and Heyne were OK at stages. A couple of less knowns in Michaelides and Oldmeadow were good in patches too. But even their players that won a bit of ball weren't really damaging. Kay was basically unsighted.
In the other game all I have to say is Thomas Rockliff. Well, I actually have a bit more to say than just that but I was remarkably impressed with him today. I've seen him play some pretty good footy before, but he was something else today. Seven goals and he would've taken a heap of marks too. Was influential whenever the ball came his way. I also loved Ash Hockey's game too. I'm a big fan of this kid and reckon he'll end up being a good value selection come draft time. McEvoy really lifted in the last quarter for Murray and would've taken about 10 marks for the game. I was also very impressed with big Dawson Simpson. The kid has balls and with his extreme height and good athleticism I'm starting to believe more and more. Also was amused when there was a mini melee in the middle when he just brushed aside a smaller opponent but the bloke went down like he'd been shot. Simpson has cult hero written all over him.
For Calder they've got something special with 16 year old Jake Melksham. I was impressed with his composure. I haven't seen the best players in that game but I reckon he would be close to their best. Laidler was solid and launched them into attack a fair few times. Dylan Joyce was exciting when he got the ball and looked the most damaging Calder player but probably didn't get enough of it.

You can say that again, I just loved the way he kept going and going and going even though he was starting to look stuffed in the second half. We'll see Calder v Eastern next week where there are going to be a handful of 16 year olds going around that will be the foundation of Metro sides and this competition for the next two seasons. Exciting stuff.

Eastern have a very impressive group of 16 year olds coming through. Looked like Knights had a few playing today as well. I thought Melksham was the only 16 year old for Calder today.
OK, a lot has been said of Cotchin and Veszpremi's game, but seriously, Totino was also fantastic today, especially in the first quarter.
Just posted in another thread but I agree with you. Totino can normally be pretty iffy by foot but was super-clean today. I thought he edged Prez and Cotchin.
Merdith was good. But he always plays like that. Always 5th best on ground.
Stanton came good in quarter 2 (?) might have been the 3rd (running towards the social club anyway). He is normally pretty easy to shut down which was frustrating from a Power perspective. You can't let him run and bounce the ball and kick into the forward-50 with no pressure.
Anyone else see a likeness between Matthew Quinton and Rod 'Tilt' Carter?
Northern were pretty even. Sanfillipo, Stanton, Hood, Thomas all had good quarters in support of Totino, Merdith and Cotchin. Zakharis was a little quiet.
Any Northern watchers fill us in on the status of Aaron Coen, Nyaburu Kelly and Steve Kelly? I would have thought all 3 would be in the team. 2 didn't even make the squad but Jack Grimes did?

Michaelides at least doesn't need 30 touches, he uses the ball well enough to almost get away with being a 15 touch guy. Can't believe Gippy named Endreas their best.
Connolly deserves some credit for taking on Kreuzer and Power, I think edged Krezuer today.
Jackson Hall was wasted in a back-pocket all day. Got some touches as a sweeper but cleaned up defensively by Prez. Frustates me that the Power keep using Kay, Hall and Heyne as KP players.
Gippy's midfield grunts Granger, Vernon, Blair and Blaser didn't get the job done.
In the other game all I have to say is Thomas Rockliff. Well, I actually have a bit more to say than just that but I was remarkably impressed with him today. I've seen him play some pretty good footy before, but he was something else today.
Saw him play a better game against Dandenong. I was hoping he was under the radar. Why buy Cotchin when you can get someone almost as good for a fraction of the price? ;)
I was also very impressed with big Dawson Simpson. The kid has balls and with his extreme height and good athleticism I'm starting to believe more and more.
I was a bit alarmed when Shaun McKernan outbodied him a couple of times in the ruck, but we know Simpson needs more time. I think he needs to get a little lower at times. Some of the smaller ruckmen can get leverage on him and move him. If he only pushes from the shoulders a lot of his 'push' is over the top of his opponent (if ya follow me). He needs to get lower and use his hips more.

Laidler was good, CHF probably isn't his spot but he certainly gave a lot.
McKernan was impressive too. Huge leap and loves a pack mark.
For mine Calder lack genuine depth. They have a handful of stars, and some promising 16s. But guys like Short, Saville, Jolley, McLeod, May, Buckley probably aren't quite as good as some of the other 2nd tier players at the other finalists. Tsarkadis and White are probably for next year and not quite ready for finals. And what has happened to Arrowsmith?
I have Murray as flag favourites, they can play better footy than they showed today. Calder shut down their switch of play which is their main weapon. Normally you see a lot more run from Thompson and the backline gang.
Murray's problem is the half-forward line. If Rockliff (or Deledio) and McEvoy don't fire where do the goals come from? Garland, McIntyre and Terlich struggled. Is Sam Wright injured? He looked to be the missing piece there at FF.

They don't mind playing them at Eastern do they? Gysberts looks special, but it is guys like Cunningham and Sloane who seem to have been around for ever that shock me ... they've both got another year!

Are you getting confused with Dylan Grimes? He played today and might've been the Grimes you saw on their list. If you mean the list that was printed in the Record he was probably just included because he's the Captain.
Nyaburu Kelly got injured last week against Geelong and looked pretty hurt. Not sure how he pulled up, but obviously not well enough to play. Coen and S.Kelly haven't played for a while.

Just seems odd to include a guy on your list who ain't going to play. Eastern have done the same with Renton. Clubs have to nominate a squad prior to the finals of 32-ish?

I think there's a chance Renton could play in the GF in Eastern make it if everything goes right, hence why he's on the list. Not sure if Grimes is 100% ruled out, but possibly isn't given he's named in the 30.

Rents is going to be out for 6 weeks so i dont think the GF is in the picture.

Falcons might have won if Henderson was able to kick more than 35 metres. He really should have finished with 5.
Is that Lachlan Henderson? If yes, did he just have a bad day kicking-wise or can't he kick?
Just interested bc he seems to be one name around the mark for the Demons with our pick 4.
Cheers :thumbsu:

Yeah he was good considering he only played half of the game on and off the bench.

Henderson has been kicking poorly since he came back from injury at least. Quite genuinely when he is 35m out directly in front you wonder if he is range. Honestly can't remember how he was kicking in the first part of the year or at the end of last. Can't remember him being this bad. His kicking is not poor, just very weak. Over 30m he is good :thumbsu:

Yer his 8 goals 4 behinds was a very good effort considering he was on and off the bench all day to get him through the game. He is booked in for shoulder surgery, but is tossing up whether or not to go through with it or wait until after the finals. If he doesnt play i dont think Northern can win without him and possibly Grimes.
Cotchins game was amazing (37 touches) and Merideths ball use was fantastic.
i cant remember if S.Kelly has played since all the private school kids came back, his kicking is boarder line woefull
When will Tantsis hall be back, could be a replacement for Veszpremi in the forwardline if he was right, although he doesnt have the same impact as Veszpremi

I agree, Post mainly lacks intensity and doesnt find the ball enough.
How does Josh Caldow compare to those mentioned
Nic Peters had 41 possessions, I certainly can't remember him getting his hands on the ball that match. Mitch Banner also had it 30 times.

Is Lachie a really dominating player? or is he rated so highly on potential. If he has no depth in his kicking, surely that leg is hindering his performance

Has probably found a position in the second half of the year too down back and improved his kicking which was fairly ordinary at the start of the year especially near goals. I suppose if you look at a formline - Caldow played on McEvoy in Rd 17 and Caldow won the points, Post played on McEvoy in Rd 18 and was convingly beaten. The ball supply in that Murray v Western game didnt help Post out much, but it was still interesting to see the difference in the way the two guys played McEvoy.
No wonder the Jets lost - Peters 41 possies, Suban 23 possies, Hinkley 32 possies - nearly 100 possies to the Rebels three key midfielders. I hope noone was meant to be tagging them.

Thanks for that...really appreciate you guys giving people like me who can't get to the junior games some insights. It sounds like a bit of a concern for someone who may go so highly in the draft but hopefully it's only temporary if the Redlegs do end up taking him.

Besides, Shiels from Eastern has played 8 games already. Melksham from Calder and Scott from Eastern have played four games already this year in their TAC Cup teams.

I think the "three games" rule applies to home and away games when it's kids under a certain age. As I recall U/16 players that can play unlimited games are the ones elligible for the 2008 draft and the ones limited to three games are elligible for the 2009 draft.
But I don't think finals count in this total anyway, so the younger U/16 players can play as much finals as they are required for.

U16 players born before 30 April (eligible for 2008 Draft) could play unlimited games after Round 5. Those born after 30 April could play a maximum of 3 plus finals. So Griffiths keeps playing through the finals.
