View Full Version : Whitnall - YES Or NO?

I know there is another thread on lance, but I wanted to start a poll with a simple yes or no answer. Just to see what percentage of fans want him to stay or go.:)
if we cannot trade him, then give him a one year contract!!
no harm in keeping him as a depth player!!

If he can improve his kicking, then he still has something to offer the club, and should be kept for a final year.
However if he can't improve his kicking, then I reckon it's just about over for Lance.
No! He is not mobile enough to play in the backline and is not a reliable enough kick to play forward. Our forwardline has enough potency now with Fevola fisher waite kennedy and KREUZER. He will be taking a important place on our list, one that could be used for another young gun. 2008 can't come fast enough:)
We should be giving priority to Kennedy ahead of Whitnall.
As we have seen in the past few weeks Lance can not finish off and as soon as the ball hits the deck he is like a statue.

whitnall is too slow to play in the modern game of footy. He has always had a great footy mind and even that has let him down over the past year. he is taking up valuable places for young players who need the experience. We should be playing young guns eg. hampson hartlett kennedy anderson jamison bower etc.

lance has gotta go because we can get someone half decent for him because he is a good player, but honestly his fitness is shocking and back in the 80's when supreme fitness wasnt required he might have been a superstar, but today i dont think hes worth it
definitely kennedy ahead of whitnall

No. I don't agree that Kennedy needs Lance around. Kennedy is one who I feel needs room to work. With Lance and Fev, Kennedy will be neglected as he was for the most part of the season.
A forward line setup of:
F: Fisher, Fev, Betts
HF: Kennedy, Waite, Houlihan
will be good for next year, a couple rotating through.

Get rid of him. Would rather see Kennedy or Aisake or Hampson play 15+ games next year.

Tough call on Lance.
It's a heart vs head decision.
The heart of course says he's a Carlton man through and through so yes we should sign him up again to a short 1 year performance based contract.
The head says test the trade waters and see what we might get offered for him.
His value to the team as a player has lessened after this season as we have won just as many games this year without him as we have the season before when he was on fire.
In the end i guess for me it would come down how much he wants money wise to stay and for how long a contract he's asking for.
Ask too much or too long and i think i'd have to say seeya Lance, thanks for the memories.

3 Sep 2007, 12:24
Yep. Has little or no trade value. Won a B&F last year and has been injured all this year. Still provides leadership and will be good next year in a defensive role with our inexperienced back line.
Give him 1 year on a massively reduced contract and see how he performs.

Would rather win some games and redevelop a winning culture. This year will benefit us in the long-term, but continue to lose will force players like Walker, Murphy, Simpson, etc. to look else where if they don't enjoy their footy.

No he is to slow, cant jump, cant kick anymore and the game has passed him by.
Old father time came quick to Lance. His dodgy knees have taken all the power out of his legs and he struggles to kick 40.
Time to go I think.

So if nobody thinks hes good enough to chase we have to keep him???
Get real!!!
Anyway... Lance wont be wearing navy blue next year... and will be lucky to get a contract somewhere else.
GONE!
Even though he took a few marks last night, the fact that he could barely get the distance from 40m really signals that his body is struggling. Time for you to hang up the boots Red.

None of these guys are guns, we should be playing young players, who need valuable experience, in the hope that they'll mature into 10-15 year Carlton Players.

1) I'll agree with that
2) Did you see him get off the ground, ask Johnson if he can jump
3) While he struggled with his kicking, the goal he kicked, the ball travelled 55m
4) I think there's a spot for Lance on the list in 08, he wont be Captain, or if we do decide Lance is no-longer the right fit for a spot on the CFC list, he'll be picked up by the Doggies

The goal he kicked from on 50 barely made it through and it stayed very low... One of his goals in the last quarter in the 99 prelim from the same spot was a much, much different kick. Yes I know it was 8 years ago but just thought it was something interesting to note...

He's getting the ball many times, included contested situations so he can certainly play the game. He even took a hanger so he can jump. I think he must've been getting injections in his knee as the last 2 weeks he couldn't kick in the first half but kicked alot better in the second half. Seems the injections might've affected the power in his legs. Nothing at all wrong with his form, just that he can't kick at the moment. Depend if his kicking's just a temporary problem. Another contract may come down to how the club thinks his knee will stand up.

Yes i saw Lance jump..... he did it once... it was playing for his career and it was a split second thing.
Now you have to understand one thing... its not abut Lance doing it once for a season.... the question nuff nuffs need to ask themselves is this.. Is Lance capable of playing a whole season at the required level..???
and he isnt...
And the club knows he isnt... and he will be told soon.!
We cant afford passangers!!!... we have a premiership team to build.

Lance prooved yesterday that he can get to the ball, but with his injury its really made his kicking suffer. Really, he lined up from 35-40 and didn't make it. He really shouldn't have played. Oh well, Eddie kicked 5:D Has nothing to do with nothing but, EDDIE!

If people are going to look at yesterdays game and think much about it you have to be kidding.
It was one of the ost uncontested games of footy played this year.
If a club was serious when they played us.. Lance wouldnt have had much room..
PS.. Jameson played close and disciplined football.... the way he is going he will be a sensational player up the track.
I also rate Austin highly.. he will improve mega next year...

3 Sep 2007, 23:40
Nope- drop him. As much as I love Lance as a CFC player, he is too slow for the modern game, has a chronic knee injury that will not get any better and we already have enough passengers.
Keep him on as a defensive coach, definitely.

Not to mention his weight issues, or the fact that he was playing for his career and couldnt produce.
A depleted forward 50 ( No Fev, No fish, a injury riddled Dee's outfit)yesterday left lance plenty of room and one out contest's and he still didnt kick a bag.....But guess what i saw Eddie taking contested grabs and he kicked 5. Lance has had too many chances. He was offered the captaincy and still hung out KFC with weight his personal issues in the public arena this year he forgot to wear a watch while out drinking in the off-season..............He is not a professional footballer and doesnt serve a purpose in 08....so piss him off NOW...He only has himself to blame.

Sorry, Lance, the game has passed you by. You've done great things for us, but we can't carry any more laughing-stock-of-the-league players. You will never be what you could have been, nor even what you once were. Thankyou for your great work, and goodbye. Feel free to coach if you want to. Its called depth.
If we don't need to delist him to free up space in the draft then he should stay.
People are so quick to get rid of a good player just because he may not be in the best 22 anymore (which is debatable).
Lets say by round 5 next year Waite is out with a knee (a semi regular occurence) and Fev is out with a groin (again, recurrence).
JK ar CHF Fisher as HFF.........who would you have at FF? (assuming now that we actually want to win?)
Lance out of the goal square would be an problem for most backmen in the comp. If he takes the mark (still JK's big problem) inside 40m (fair bet leading from the square) then he will be fine.
Should get a 1 year deal if he comes back from the break in good shape. If he can't regain form and can't fight his way into the side then he will go at the end of next year.
In the very least it will push JK to "take" the position off Lance, rather than just hand it over which won't push him at all.
Lastly, who is going to teach JK where to go as a CHF?
Lance was giving plenty of instruction to JK during the Roos match when the ball was upfield. He can learn a lot from a guy who knows where to move to better than most in this competition.

That's up to him.
I don't think too many players in the next few years will be "guaranteed" a spot, as our list gets a bit deeper, and most are at about the same place.
The mainstays ATM will all struggle to hold their positions 2-3 years down the track - Carrazzo, Simpson, Scotland, Houlihan.
Those "second tier" mids of which there are a lot, will be pushed out of the top tier with new talent and Stevens return, and spots in the second tier will become very competitive. This is one of many things we need as a football club. Players to find new levels to force their way into the side.
This is what I want JK to do. Find a new level to force Lance out.
You see the hunger that Cloke came across with, and it turned him from an average injury prone player into a good injury prone player.
If JK is just handed the position on a platter what incentive does he have to drive himself to become better?
We have a team full of guys who have played loads of games that they may otherwise not have simply due to our lack of depth.
TIme to force players to earn their positions from the older guys rather than just pass it on becasue they've waited long enough.
Experience means people look up to to you
Actually it means you have been around for a while and have learnt a thing or two. You're talking about respect, and there is no question he has lost a lot and needs to earn it back.
Funny how in the space of a year on this forum Lance has gone from being a player with a great footy brain, and average body, to a complete hack.
Lets look at it another way.
The skills in footy games at the start of the year are pretty average compared to the end of the season right? Despite a full pre-season after only 1-2 months off, players still have to fine tune their disposal skills.
Lance had another break of 6 weeks - no skills work involved. You that dismiss him then expect he will come back and be banging the through the guts from 50m out. Unrealistsic expectation.
The key questions Lance has to answer for his new contract are:
Can he still beat his man to the ball - YES
Can he still take contested marks - YES
Can he back up week after week with his knee - still unclear
Can he return from the end of year break in shape - yet to be answered.
Lance will be given until the very last minute in terms of list submissions to prove his fitness.
He does not need to prove his worth. Anyone here suggesting he does is being bloody minded and needs to examine their motives.

Ummm, he won AA last year playing the same role. You don't get nominated by getting beaten by an opponent every week, in fact it's the other way round. Our backline is obviously our weakness and he adds a bit of experience stability back there. I don't believe he belongs in the forward line for the reasons you stated.
Obviously this means nothing if he can't get his body right and he's not fit. But Lance is one of the best readers of the play and has some of best footy smarts that you will see. Not too good in this area down at Carlton at the moment.

And we shouldnt have to worry about him anymore...cos hes gone...and thats all there is Bluebear...
Lets just cut to the chase....if he stays its cos he has one or two people still trying to push shit uphill for him.. as theyre mates...
The rest of us know.. if he stays it will end in tears...
But its safe to assume that because the new people who have been chosen to come in and look over these matters want him gone...he wont be here next year cos he isnt capable ....
BTW are you Lance?????
This is getting dull mate, its as easy as:

Based on this spelling.................no. Clearly not.:o
Some sensible discussion rather than self serving rants would have been nice, but alas, its not to be.
Ciao.
BB :)
keep him he is still a really good player. needs work on his accuracy though.

Cant be self serving rants if he wont be here next year. ;)
I know there is another thread on lance, but I wanted to start a poll with a simple yes or no answer. Just to see what percentage of fans want him to stay or go.:)
I just can't vote on this poll. I really want Lance to turn things around, but I'm not convinced he can. I'm sure the Club will sit down with him and reassess things. A fit Lance playing consistent footy would be awesome for our young side. However we can play only one of Lance or Saddington. One of them must go. :)

He has no trade value they got no offers 2 years ago when he was used as trade bait.
If other teams see no value in him why should we?
Oh the old chestnut about experience and or not having any on the park we have coaches and specialists to teach players that.
Unfortunately players see $ signs when they should be seeing The END.
