View Full Version : Collingwood VS Sydney - Elimination Final!

Well, here we go again, up against our bogey side of the past 2 seasons, opposed to Adelaide who's our bogey side of the past 8 seasons lol, but i digress.
Fans for both sides could make a decent argument in favour of their club, i'm gonna start with just a couple of reasons, to get things going.
I think one of the big differences between the match this week, and the game in round 21, is the defenders that Sydney will have back. Brennan just shouldn't be playing on Rusling for a start lol, i think the Collingwood forwards will find their task a lot more difficult this weekend. Also, never underestimate the difference that finals pressure will make, and it will make a difference. Sydney have had more experience at tough finals in recent years, and i expect that to count for a lot.
Collingwood will be hoping to continue it's recent dominance over the Swans and take it into this finals series. I think this will depends on the Pies not drifting from what's worked for them on the last three occasions. I believe they did that by taking Sydney away from it's comfort zone, and moving the ball on at any cost. If we can't get most of the ball going our way this time, then our strengthened defence wont make much of a difference.
I'm not going to end this with a tip, because we all know that's pointless, i just want people to discuss the upcoming final, even fans of opposition clubs, the more unbiased opinions the better!

I take your point with defenders coming back, but in the first meeting this year we were without Clement, Prestigiacomo, O'Brien and Buckley just to name a few, whilst Sydney had Leo Barry but didn't have Nick Davis or LRT.
When we met again we had Clement, O'Brien and Buckley back with Josh Fraser missing and Sydney had Nick Davis back (Clement dominated him) and were missing Leo Barry and LRT.
The main thing in Sydney's favour is they are coming off a game where they destroyed Hawthorn. It will be interesting to see if they rush back Kenelly (who may not be match fit) and whether or not Hall changes their dynamics from Sunday. I'm assuming Bucannon will be a straight swap for Ablett.
Let's hope the pies get the hat-trick over the Swans. :thumbsu:

Well, here we go again, up against our bogey side of the past 2 seasons, opposed to Adelaide who's our bogey side of the past 8 seasonsI've seen your trolling on the Collingwood board before they were deleted by a moderator declaring how Sydney will win this week. If they don't, there will be a few people looking for you next week.
Collingwood have beaten Sydney twice this season so far. Collingwood were not expected to win either time. The Swans are sure to start to favourites again despite this, so I doubt that any Collingwood supporter is not expecting a tough match. You were talking as though Sydney has already won.

Am i supposed to be scared now?Scared? What of? Your trolling and stirring on the Collingwood board regarding this weekends match will be remembered though if Sydney do lose. But they are hot favourites yet again for a third time this season, and you are so sure they'll win according to your post, so you have nothing to be concerned about. Right?

It's their first meeting in a final since 1945, when the Swans would win en route to the bloodbath GF.

I think this could work against us and the fact collingwood lost to the crows could work for you...
Neither team has been convincing of recent times. I wouldn't be surprised if this game was an ugly yet close game.
FWIW if we thrash collingwood and look really hot, we'll win the flag (heh heh heh, well part of this is probably wishful thinking, but anyway)

 Unbelievable how they can avoid playing each other in a final for 60+ years...

In some ways we were better. Not only did we dominate a team which was attempting to get a top 4 spot but we did it in a very entertaining way. The Swans moved the ball so quickly it was like watching a completely different team.

We didn't win a final between 1945 and 1996. I think we only played in 4 finals series in that time too - 1970, 1977, 1986 and 1987.

Nothing like the 05 swans, you can't play that way anymore unfortunately. We looked good but Hawthorn seemed to give up so its hard to tell just how effective the swans were when they put on the big score, on the other side when hawthorn did start playing we did still manage to out score them by a point I think so its a nice return to form.

With complete respect to Hawthorn, we hammered them in the first half and hung up the boots in the second.
There was one passage of play in that 3rd quarter where their ruckman had a bounce through the centre (Taylor?). There were players standing either side, walking. The reason he had that much space is nobody chased him.
The game completely fizzed out after half time. Sydney did what they had to do to maintain their lead, they slipped down to 3rd gear.
Hawthorn were poor, however Sydney did not allow them any space in any part of the ground. Hawthorn were either really really terrible, and it was a training run for Sydney. Or it was the most dominating performance I have ever seen from the Sydney Swans.
I think the answer lies somewhere in between.
The young Pies dont need finals experience especially at the MCG where they play in front of huge crowds every week. I think they will settle early.
Lets hope Barry Hall plays as true CHF and becomes the link man for Kennelly and Leo coming out of defense. This will allow more space for davis and Micky and OKeefe. If Presti gets BBBB then we should have an easy out of defense plan everytime. If BBBB plays FF on Presti then thats a win for the Pies.
Our Defense should be the best it has all year. I would play Bolton on Rocca, LRT on Cloke, Leo as a sweeper (2nd man up). Tiger on Rusling. Malceski on Thomas. With no Brennen giving away 4 goals will help. I think we wont give up a big score but I dont think the Pies will give us a big score either.
Both teams have workmanlike midfields with no players worth heavy tags. Goodes is the only star in this regard and the Pies will need to stop him which I dont think they can. They may be happy to let him run riot if they can keep everyone else quiet.
I like Sydneys chances if Tiger plays. He is our Irish lucky charm. Swans by 3 goals:thumbsu:

Presti's still recovering from injury and unlikely to play - Wakelin is the one that's going to match him up instead (although the take him up the ground point still stands. Didn't happen last time, so Hall got thrashed). Malceski on Thomas hasn't worked out well the last two times its been tried - it might be worthwhile putting Dempster on him instead, or even better Bevan though he's likely to be needed on Leon Davis and thus not available. Tiger takes whoever our 3 talls don't take, and Malceski should play forward this time.
Pendlebury is the one in the midfield that we should probably put the hardest tag on. I don't think he's had brilliant games against us, but he remains the one I think deserves the hardest tag. Because he spends a bit of time forward Mathews would normally be a good option for him, but since he's done so well on Lockyer Roos may be tempted to stick with that matchup in which case Crouch might be the one to apply the clamps. Crouch would require some help in marking duels though.

Hope so, Thomas gave him a belting at TS and Thomas plays quality footy in big games!

Goodes was BOG by an absolute street in rnd 21......did everything, and yet the pies still won fairly easily.......cant see him having a bigger influence than the rnd 21 game.

*cough* Bucks *cough*
He may be 35 but he is as fresh as a daisy and now has 3 games under his belt. Also does not have his usual minder in Ablett. Don't take your eye off him as he will hurt you.
No way near as confident as I was with the 2 H&A games this year but still think we can get the Swans provided we can keep BBB Hall in reasonable check.

He's dangerous, its just that I think Pendlebury is even more dangerous, and yes that is scary when you think about the fact that he's only in his 2nd year of football. It was really noticeable how the Pies midfield didn't look the same when he was out for a few weeks a little while back.
Of course, Buckley has been out for the year so no telling how much effect he'll have. What's worst is that with Ablett out we don't really have a natural match-up for him - who gets him will probably depend on whether he lines up in midfield or the forward line, and on how the other match-ups pan out.
If we can improve our competitiveness in midfield, improve the decision-making especially in picking which forward target to go for and improve the pressuring skills then we've got a good chance, but we simply must do better than the last 3 games we've played against you lot, undoubtedly our bogey team of the competition together with Adelaide.

That's the most thoughtful, in depth analysis and I've read so far. Summed it up beautifully! Tank you very much
As for my own contribution I have 2 words, Hall and Kennelly.
One won't be there, the other may as well not be. Sorry, but Big Bad Bazza's had a shocking year and I can't see him getting any better over night. I think that will be the difference
Yep, that was more than 2 words. Oh well :p

Excellent, so we have the most recent finals form than .
Seriously this is going to be a tough bruising encounter and to the victors go the potentially depleted Eagles.
Best of luck am hoping but my gut tells me its Collingwood tonight by about 3 goals.
