View Full Version : ELIMINATION FINAL 1: HAWTHORN vs ADELAIDE
stmookeyj
3 Sep 2007, 18:07
5th plays 8th on Saturday Afternoon as the Hawks meet the Crows. Adelaide sneaks into the finals with their win over the Pies on Friday Night and importantly has an extra 2 day's break as opposied to Hawthorn who are still smarting over being blown off the SCG on Sunday.
Injury wise, the Crows have mainly managed to avoid the injury curse but the Hawks have some concerns. Bateman may miss with hamstring tightness, Croad is in doubt with concussion but should still take his place, and Stephen Gilham is awaiting the MRP after getting booked on Sunday.
The only time the sides met in 2007 was on a wet Saturday Night on Heritage Round 14 with Adelaide handling the conditions better and winning by 71 points. Conditions won't be a factor given the game is at the Dome, but the Crows are probably the best side from interstate when it comes to winning at the venue. This is the 2nd meeting in September, the first being in 1993 when the Crows stunned Hawthorn to win by 15 points.
Grant Birchall** will be awaiting the MRP. Should get off.

early tabsports prices
Adelaide $1.68
Hawthorn $2.05
considering that hawthorn have only beaten them once (by 5 points at the mcg in 2003) in their past seven meetings that's very generous odds. factor in that hawthorn played in warmish conditions on sunday & that the cors have had an extra day or two rest. my tip & my money is on the crwos this week... adel will win by anywhere between 4-10 goals.

Adelaide's expirience will come into play and they should win by 5+ goals

I wouldn't take past matches against the sides into consideration.
Hawthorn haven't beaten Adelaide lately simply because for the best part of 5 years they haven't been too flash.
Even though Adelaide beat Hawthorn convincingly 6 or 7 weeks ago, it was at AAMI Stadium and also in the wet. Hawthorn haven't travelled well all year.
Hawthorn play much better at home, so it won't be an easy ride for Adelaide as some people are suggesting.
Adelaide: 17.11.113

Wow a non biased supporter on bigfooty! Spot on mate Adelaide are entitled to be favourites but it won't be anything like last game.
Hawthorn finished 5th for a reason...so we cant discount them
I am biasedly confident of a win to the AFC but understand that in a 2 team game my hopes may be dashed
I do like the choice of TD and think that it suits the AFC more than the Hawks. But all the woulda coulda shouldas wont mean a thing .... :o
GO CROWS!!!

I'm certainly not confident but I guess that is what a whooping in Round 22 will do to you. The fact that it isn't at the MCG doesn't worry me too much as we play the Dome reasonably well these days. The biggest gripe I have is that as the higher qualifying side, we only get a 6 day break coming off an interstate trip whilst the lower ranked side gets an 8 day break. Hardly a worthy reward for having had the better season, the vast majority of which was spent inside the top 4.
Anyway, whinging aside, the Crows deserve to approach this game with some confidence. The key to Hawthorn winning is simply playing an accountable first quarter. We often start slowly with the intention of over-running opponents but this is just not an option in finals. If Hawthorn stay within 1-2 goals for the first quarter/half then I fully expect that their belief will soar and that they will win going away.
On the other hand, if we produce out customary slow start, it just might hand the Crows the initiative to dominate us like the Swans did, and like the Crows also did earlier this season.
I predict the former scenario. The players pride should have been stung on the weekend and the incentive of finals should be all the motivation they need to bounce back and prove why they have been the better side this year.
The game can go two ways for mine.
1. We come out hard and get a good lead before Adelaide's pressure and physicality causes us to buckle.
2. We try to come out hard but Adelaide don't let us touch the ball and we mentally buckle.
At the MCG it would've been fairly even but Adelaide play TD well as everyone knows.
This is the chance for Hawthorn to proven most people wrong, including me, because after easily being thumped by Adelaide in Adelaide i thought they were going to finish 7-8, but they steadied and deserved their 5th placing.
Both Adelaide and Sydney look dangerous, and would have many backers to win the flag from outside the top four.
Adelaide by 39 points

I think it's safe to assume that the Hawks will not play as badly as they did last weekend. Adelaide is finally coming into some form, has received no real injuries (touches wood) and almost has a complete list to choose from (barring the long term injuries of Biglands, Hentschell etc). All year we've struggled with injury and consistancy but the last few weeks, we've managed to pull it together. As Craigy says, momentum is important!
My bet is that it will be a tightly contested game with the Crows winning - but not by much.

I don't know which way this game could go. Hawthorn coming of a thrashing, Adelaide coming off a good win at the dome.
History says Adelaide can do it
The form says Adelaide can do it
I just hope they can do it...:thumbsu:

I'm predicting a clost game till half time. Hawks up by a couple of goals.
In the premiership quarter Adelaide will start ripping into them.
Adelaide by 38 points in a goal-fest.

Hawthorn need to have a lead at half time i think. Can't see them chasing Adelaide down in the second half.
Early victories to Hodge, Mitchell and maybe a couple of goals from Buddy early on to get him going could really see the Hawks take hold of this game in the first hour.
I'm confident our defenders can stay rock solid, It may depend on what our forward line gives us on the day. Will be watchng Nick Gill closely.
Adelaide to take control in the second half and finish 5 goals up on a brave Hawthorn

So true, we definitely won't run out of puff- look at the Bulldogs game where they ran out the game superbly. It is not unusual for young teams to have fluctuating performances, what matters is that they can get it together for this weekend, get there running game back into gear and a 20 point win would be a fantastic result for us.
Exactly, if we get blown away in the first half - which is quite likely, we're gone...but if we can stick with the Crows for the first half it should be a terrific match.
We're a fantastic finishing side, but let few far to many opportunities early on in the match

must win the hard balls & clearances to win this & we did exactly that last time we met, crows should be cooler under the pressure of finals than the young hawks, have to keep Franklin quiet if we do all that, we'll win by 5-6 goals I recon & the dome is our home away from home. hopefully the roof is closed too so we get a yellow ball :D

If Adelaide were a "great" side they wouldnt have finished 8th. Would have been right up there in the top 4..
Just remember last time we played it was wet and wet conditions equals hard bodied football.. It is impossible for it to be wet this weekend at the dome..
Secondly you guys are predicting that Adelaide will over run the hawks in the 2nd half!! The hawks are like a swooping racehorse, they are the worst starters in the league but when they come home they come home hard.. They know where the post is..
Speaking of form, the hawks have won 10 of 13 in Melbourne!! That form not good enough? We have the worst travelling record, if we played Adelaide at AAMI I wouldnt even bother watching, we just dont travel well, might be a preparation thing or a mental thing, leave that to the coaching panel..
The last 2 times we have come of heavy defeats we have won by 10 goals, we will not win by that margin this week however I think this game will take alot of hawthorn knockers by surprise.. We have won 4 out 5 at the dome this year, that is good form..
Come saturday if the hawthorn machine come to play, I dont think Adelaide will be able to stop them..
Hawks by 25
im hoping that the loss to Sydney has stung the boys and it breaks the slow starting rut weve been in for a little while. A 3 goal margin to either side at half time will set up an interesting 2nd half with Hawthorn being known finishers.. Its time for Buddy to step up and if he finds his kicking boots early we're a big show..
Hawks by 21 for me

Adelaide play probably the worst style of football of any team. They hardly kick any high scores, it is all about shutting down and playing a really shitty brand of footy. Just bores me- Hawks must kick ahead early and then make Adelaide post a score.

I personally dont see the 'boring' part in the crows game.. They get the ball and run/handball/kick and try to get it through the goals, thats what your supposed to do right? When they dont have the ball they try to stop the other team from doing that, which is also what your supposed to do yeah?
On top of that the largest margin they have been beaten by this year is 33 points.. Plus they kicked an abundance of goals against the hawks last time round.. They must be doing something right

Club member allocations closed last night at 5pm.
Both clubs were allocated half the stadium for their members to fill, with the remaining tickets either being snapped up by opposition members - if they sold out their allocation, or going up for GA sale on the Wednesday.
Going by the amount of Crow members and coming across, there is a good chance that this game could draw a near capacity crowd.

My bet is that it will be a tightly contested game with the Crows winning - but not by much. Al Clarkson will get the hawks up from last week. the crows are good and will be hard to beat. but the hawks are brave kids with a few wise vetrans and some classy middle age players who want to win a final. hawks by 17pts.

Adelaide averaged 85.5 points per home and away game. Hawthorn averaged 95.3 points a game.
A difference of a goal and a half a game doesn't exactly support yr perspective, but each to their own...

10 point average is a reasonable amount over 22 rnds. Interesting stat that, would you have the defensive averages by any chance as well?
I would of thought our average may of been a bit lower than that after some of the low scores we have put on the board.
Then again that just shows that when we really play well we are capable of kicking a lot of goals. Is going to be a super match which will be decided by 2 players IMO: The Roo for Adelaide, and Buddy for Hawthorn.

Defensively, crows averaged 77.8 points condeded a round, hawks 84.3 points.
Agree it's going to be closer than most predicting...
And the franklin factor looms large. Trust me, as a crows fan, he's the biggest concern. We don't really have a game-breaker like him, unless Scott Welsh fires, but he's playing injured at the mo'.
Neil Craig said yesterday Scott Stevens a candidate for Buddy but expect Massie to get first crack again - but can't see him controlling him in fine weather like he did in the wet in round 14.

Hawks will win quite easily IMHO.
34pts.
The Crows own the Hawks just like the Swans own the Hawks. It's no coincidence the Swans and Crows both play similar tight checking, hard tackling games. If the Crows hit the Hawks anywhere near like Swans did, they will win.

This is a last hurrah for Adelaide (in its current ageing guise) and I'm expecting them to come out hard as.
This will be a worry for the rawer Hawk unit, which is ever and always vulnerable in the opening quarter of matches.
If Hawthorn can hold steady and be within two goals of the Crows at the first break then they'll be in with a show, particularly given their tendency to turn in strong second half performances.
Much is being made of the last meeting at AAMI, but while Adelaide has had the better of Hawthorn for several years, results have generally been far tighter, so it would surprise to see a blowout of AAMI proportions in the dry at the Dome.
I expect Adelaide to get over the line, but it could be tighter than most expect.
I suspect we'll get hammered, but i'd love it if we surprised everyone and won.
