Hi Footy fans...
Just one more round to go until we cut loose four teams for Season 2007. As for what's up top, this past weekend brought another case of the shakes for one finals bound side in particular, while another is running hot. Both of these teams are gunning for a shot at the Bulldogs in three weeks. The Dogs won't have the best finals preparation, with a bye in the final round and then another weekend off for the first week of the play-offs. Will they be soft? Time will tell.
So lets see what happened this past weekend in this edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up for Round 22.
First we head to Adelaide's inner-east, down The Parade to Coopers Stadium where the Bulldogs went to face the Redlegs. This year's encounters between the two teams haven't been exactly memorable for the home side, a total of 220 points separated the two thus far. A bit of arrogance on Centrals part saw them up by just 11 points at quarter time, Centrals booting 4.3 to 2.4 for the first term. But Centrals dropped that act in the second quarter as they kicked 6.5 to Norwood's 1.3 to be up by 43 points at the long break. The Dogs fans at the ground got restless as the Redlegs took their time returning to the field, the Bulldogs players on the other hand made them pay for making them wait. Another 5.3 to the visitors to the Redlegs' 2.2 saw the gap jump out to 62 points. In the final quarter, the Dogs seemed to have taken their foot off the accelerator. Not that Norwood's 3.3 made too much difference, the Dogs had done the damage already and ran out winners by 51 points. Centrals have the bye next week, they also collect the minor premiership and another week off. Paul Thomas was named best afield for the Dogs while the Redlegs voted in James Gallagher as their standout.
The Panthers were about to suffer some more pain over at the Woodville Oval, as the Eagles dusted off the 1972 vertical stripes of the old Woodpeckers. The first quarter would have flattered the Panthers, only being down by three goals at quarter time after kicking 2.2 to the Eagles 5.2. But the margin would be out to 25 points by half time after the Eagles added a further 4.3 to South's 3.2. After the long break... the destruction began. An Eagles triple-threat team of Mark Passador, Nick Salter and Ben Schwarze were the major contributors to the scoreboard, in the third quarter a nine goal blast without a miss to South's 2.2 and at three quarter time, the margin was blown out to 65 points. The home side continued to rain punishment down on the lowly and undisciplined Panthers, another eight goals to one in the final term put the Eagles up to second spot on the ladder after their 103 point win. Bernie Vince was voted as best on ground for the Eagles, while Scott McGlone was named best for South.
The ABC Match of the Round saw the cameras head to the Challenge Recruitment Oval at the Bay for the clash between the Tigers and the Double Blues. A bumper crowd turned out for this one, topping the next best attendance by almost 3000 heads! A tense and closely fought first half ensued, starting off with the Blues taking a five point lead at quarter time after bagging 5.1 to Glenelg's 4.2. The Tigers wrested control in the second term, outmuscling the Blues defence to kick 5.2 to 2.1. At half time the Tigers were up by 14 points. Unbelievably, the Double Blues went to sleep in the third quarter and the Tigers pounced on the opportunities which were almost abundant. They landed home 8.2 to Sturt's 2.2 to be up by 50 points at three quarter time. Despite a last quarter rally by the Blues, along with Brant Chambers 100th goal for the season, they couldn't get close enough to the Tigers who still took out a 34 point win.
Hmmm... what is there to say about this match? West Adelaide travelled to the Prospect Oval to have North Adelaide run rampant on them. The Roosters started the torture early, restricting the Bloods to just three behinds while bagging 5.4 for themselves. At quarter time, the gap was 25 points. Those three behinds on Westies scoreboard would stay that way for the rest of the half, while another Rooster goal stanza of seven goals was the story for the second term and at the long break the visitors were by by 77 points. How much more could the home fans take? Their endurance would continue to be tested in the third quarter as the Roosters piled on more goals and West finally managed to bag a couple of six-pointers. At the final change the lead was out to 102 points. The Roosters rested up in the final term, but did extend the gap by a couple of behinds as they romped home by 104 points. James Allan was best afield for North, while Marc Dragicevic was West best on ground.
