View Full Version : Is this the week to play ugly football?

Just throwing this out there for debate.
Considering the way the Crows are likely to line up against us and knowing their physical style (similar to Sydney last week in a lot of ways), is this the week we should be thinking of reverting to the ugly brand of footy we played in Rd8 against St Kilda, and won?
Restrict the other sides use of the ball and chip, chip, chip in safety to carve out chances? A running 1-on-1 game is likely to work against us, especially with a few likely absences this weekend, and I've been thinking that at this stage of the season winning ugly is better than not winning at all...
One word "Accountability"
Against Sydney, when WE had the ball, possessions were under pressure as they played tight. When THEY had the ball, seems to me we tried zoning.
Zoning is fine if the other team arent hugely accountable, but if it's pure 1 on 1 then our players need to stick to their opponents like glue.

Ohhhhhh I hate the Zone!!!!
The zone has its place when the opposition is coming out of defence for 1 or 2 kicks... after that MAN ON MAN.... PLEASE

Must win the ruck and the clearances.
I would like to see us take some chances and move the ball quickly and directly through the midfield. If we slow the game down by chipping the ball around, we will be playing right into the Crows hands. They flood back hard and the best way to combat this is by quick and long ball movement into our forward line before the Crows have time to implement their bullshit style of play. We must back our big forwards to get the job done.
Also, for the love of God, Andrew Mcleod MUST have a hard tag for the full four quarters because if he gets enough of the ball the Crows will win.

We'd get killed.
Make no mistake if we play One on One we'll lose badly.
Our only chance is to make sure the game is open and run our proverbials off.

I don't care if it's as "ugly" as the St Kilda game, to win would be just fantastic.
Let's face it, both Adelaide & Sydney play the ugliest game in the league.
A win is a win, is a win!!! :)

No!
Open the game up, we don't have the skills and power to play the one on one contested football. Our run and carry is our greatest asset, we can outrun most teams in the comp and can't see Adelaide lasting the distance in this type of game. If we play the one on one tempo football that the Crows play we will get hammered.
Open the forward line right up, stick Hodgey and Lewis rotating between the centre and full forward. We need to make McLeod accountable for someone and not let him run all around the park getting 30+ possessions. Maybe Crawf can line up on him. I'd be tempted to have Buddy at CHF by himself with Roughie and Boyle (Rotating with Dixon on the bench) parked in the goal square. The more open the forward line is the more our guys can use their pace on the leads, I doubt the Crows defenders have the pace and size to keep up with Buddy one on one.
