View Full Version : McLeod MUST be tagged .....

I stated this in another thread but thought it worthy of it's own topic.

Andrew McLeod is the Crows most damaging player and MUST be tagged and made to earn every possession. When we played them earlier this season, McLeod simply did as he pleased. He is close to the most dangerous plyer in the AFL when he has time and space with which to work his magic and he needs to be stopped at all costs on Saturday. If he gets enough of the ball and enough time to create, the Crows will win. If we restrict him though to something like 20 possessions and put the pressure on him when he has the ball, we will give ourselves every chance of knocking them over.

Who would you play on him? Can we afford not to have Sewell in the midfield?

Duhh.. ;)

Whatever mate, but a lot of coaches have gone in and not tagged McLeod this season and have paid the penalty.

Can you remember who played on him when we played them at AAMI earlier in the year?

No?

Neither can I but he did get it 40 odd times and sliced us to pieces with it which tells you that Clarko did not pay him the respect that he deserves. If he makes the same mistake again, the same thing will happen.

I think that we just have to take that chance. If Sewell can shut down McLeod, this will mitigate any disadvantage by not having him in the midfield.

Maybe, and this is thinking outside the square: do we play Crawford on McLeod, make him (McLeod) somewhat accountable and try to hurt him the other way?

I was trying to be humerous.. :(

I don't think we can spare Crawford now Bateman is out. We rely on a couple of our players being able to run all day and with Chance & Clarke out we're running out of such players.

Fair enough to think of the Andrew McLeod factor.

However, Clarko and his honchos would need to be careful in paying so much attention to one player leaving pressure off other Crows allowing them to do damage.

Coaching tactics aren't so simple but your point is taken, Crypto.

Agree, it's a MUST that he's tagged. Had 40 touches last time we played - it was just ridiculous. Stop him and Johncock and we're on the way - they rely on their drive so much from HB...

Does Vandenberg know how to tag???

no need to tag him

finals tactic #1. in the 1st quarter hold the ball up in the 60-80m range outside of our forward line and kick it high to mcleod. roughie to hang 20-30m behind him the whole quarter and punish him when the ball comes in. standard practice in the 1st qtr of a finals game.

I think we should put Browny on him who can hurt him the other way with his marking power , besides we need a crumber with Osborne looking unlikely facing suspension... Id put Croad at CHB , and let him stay there. Gilham on Burton. Hodge may need to be sacrificed and played on Riccutio who has a significant body strength advantage on all our players bar Hodge and Croad. Smith at Box Hill Reserves , with Tuck coming in for him. Ellis for Bateman. McGlynn out for Dowler , we need to stretch their defence as it is going to be a fine day , so no wet windy conditions to contend with this time.

Their Midfield is very dangerous as Thompson kicks goals as well as accumilates. Goodwin must be beaten by Mitchell. He has to hurt him the other way .. Mitchell wont hurt him on the scoreboard but if he can get first use and negate Goodwins influence then we have a good chance to win.. with Sewelly TAGGING (not getting his own ball) Edwards.

We need to get on the front foot , be attacking and run run run until nothing is left in the tank..

We definitely seem like the hunted this weekend.

Can't see much on the Adelaide board about who the crows need to stop/tag to win the game. :(

This week against Adelaide we will play with one loose man in defence like we usually do, but in our forward line we must take out Mcleod. Graham Johncock is a good player but this season has been alot quiet then his previous two and we should just free him up in covering Mcleod

I personally loved our tactic of leaving him unmarked the last time we played.

Thought it was a real winner of an idea.

"I used to think sarcasm was the lowest form of wit - then I discovered fart jokes!"

It's things like leaving McLeod unmarked for an entire game that have people questioning Clarko's match day tactics.

The name Cornes comes to mind too.

I wonder how they'll stop Lewis, Hodge, Mitchell and Crawford?

Everyone talks about tagging McLeod, but nobody ever does it. It would be nice for us to at least try instead of watching him run around like an unregistered dog.

put Brown dog on him and tell him to rough the f**ker up

McLeod plays a soft brand of outside receiver football (though yes, he is an absolute champion player), I would like to see him with someone hanging on his arse all day.......

dunno if Brownie has the motor, but if they play "loose ladson" on him I will furious...

Are any of the Hewitt clan keen to pull on the Brown and Gold ?

You don't need to tag McLeod, he will get the ball anyway. But as some people have already said, you need to make him accountable. Maaca likes to set up play and do his own thing, and he occasionally gets caught out on the defensive side of his game. I'm not sure who you guys would put on him, but someone that can stay with him, yet kick goals on the rebound.

Goodluck tagging McLeod because I reckon he is in career best form at the moment ( albeit the odd turnover ) hes playing more as a midfielder but hell you've got to admire his run & link.

Someone mentioned that on our board we're not discussing who to tag etc; well, some have already won the game over there....Im of the other opinion...that game at AAMI earlier in the year is irrelevant.

Your team is dangerous otherwise you wouldnt be where you are - heck you should have beaten the ferals in Launy!

Plus you are a wounded foe:eek: I for one am expecting a nailbiter.

McLeod is very important to Adelaide, but the best way to beat Adelaide is in the square. The way Adelaide set up makes it very hard to move the ball quickly in to the forward line, but if you bomb it in, Johncock, Massie, Torney and Stevens just clean up and get the ball to McLeod. If you get Adelaide on the back foot in the middle of the ground - by forcing turnovers at half forward - and get the ball in to your marking forwards it will go a long way to beating us.

To simply tag McLeod isn't enough, and he usually gets a tag most weeks anyway. Dale Thomas went with him on Friday night, look what happened.

Not wanting to be argumentative but Dale Thomas is hardly my idea of a tagger. He isn't exactly an accountable footballer, as gifted as he is.

I would play a defensive forward on him for sure. He creates a lot of play from down back! A Vandenberg/Ossie type player would suffice. Perhaps Sewell.

Whether you call it a 'tag' or not, we simply can't allow him to run riot like he did last time we met (mind you I think he had a few mates that night that also racked up career-best stats).

We need to be ACCOUNTABLE (apologies for shouting) all over the ground, not just on McLeod. If not, they will carve us up. I still think that whoever gets a run on McLeod will have a huge job - would think that possibly Sewell, Crawf or even Smith (make him accountable for once) could have a go. Another big job will be on Riccuito - probably Brown for him?

Basically the whole Hawks team needs to lift their tackling and defensive pressure by about 100% - it's amazing how the tables can turn once the opposition are actually put under a similar amount of pressure. Of course, this is easier said then done, but let's hope that it happens on Saturday at the Dome!
