I think his leadership this year has been nothing short of brilliant.
I will admit that when he was first announced as captain i had serious doubts about his ability to still play the game at the highest level let alone be captain.
And when he did his finger in the first game, i thought to myself here we go again with the captains curse.
After yesterday he showed us all why he was named captain.
His address to the players at the end of the game yesterday shows that he really wants all the players to keep there feet on the ground and continue to keep it all in check and not get ahead of themselves.
Well done Tommy i think the spoils are just around the corner for you.:thumbsu::thumbsu::)

Demands respect. Just look how the boys are looking at him. Even expereinced players like Dash and Scarlo

Harley's game has gone to another level too. He had a job to do yesterday with the injury to Egan, and he did it brilliantly. How many big pack marks did he take against bigger oposition? Gun.
And when you hear the guy speak, he actually comes across as intelligent and worth listening to, unlike the majority of AFL'ers who speak cliches.
What a great photo, thanks for sharing it, thats my new PC wallpaper!
Has been sensational this year as leader..both on and off field. Much kudos to those who selected him to be so at start of year...
Also kudos to Cam Mooney......his leadership of forward line as his controlled aggression should not go unnoticed

Leadership personified. That picture says a 1000 words. Everyone is involved in his conversation, listening intently. I think he was vilified early on, when he was given the leadership role mainly due to being injured. However, since then I think he has developed into probably the best captain we've had in 10+ years.
Great photo.

Really impressed with his overhead marking this year too.
Always been the best aspect of his game. The 2004 season he was unreal, I am 100% positive he didnt drop one mark that year.

I was just about to start a thread on Tom until I saw this one.
When he was made captain I thought - another injury prone captain?
When he made his return after the finger injury I didn't think he would be able to keep up, that the game had probably passed him by...I am happy to eat my words.
IMO he is the most improved player at GFC this year, he is playing the best football I have ever seen him play and I can think of none better than him to hold the cup aloft (hopefully) in 3 weeks time.

He leads by example the number of times he puts himself back into a pack or takes a pack mark is sensational he gives the whole team somethign to aspire to.

Pointed out on SEN yesterday is that it's (relatively) easy to find a good defender who spoils in a contest but Harley's first option is always to attempt to mark. I reckon that takes enormous skill and courage.
He's taken some rippers this year.

Back to his best! Commendable performance on Sunday by him; captains game. He took some great pack marks which impressed but he topped it off by providing run out of defence and through the middle also.
Keep up that scintillating form Harls!:thumbsu:

I don't think it was people doubting his leadership qualities, just his ability to get on the park.

Actually the ones I remember doubted his ability to contribute to the best 22 (but that was mostly from one individual as I recall).
Who cares though, ancient history now.

Geelong prior to this year has struggled desperately with leadership, as much as we all love King he simply did not have the leadership ability. I thoroughly believe that Geelong would not have won the premiership without Harley, he was the missing link. THANKYOU TOM HARLEY, YOU SUPERSTAR.

Very articulate, very brave, and got the best possible result out of our playing list. Will seriously go down as a true legend of the Geelong football club.

Articulate, obviously highly respected by the boys (and opposition), charming, hard as a cats head, terrifically courageous. Best captain for donkey's years.

Agreed on all points. He's absolutely been one of our catalysts for our turnaround.

I'm not a Norwood fan, but just remember he came out of the SANFL system as a Norwood lad. Norwood have a strong sense of tradition and price having won 27 premierships in the SANFL.

Not the best player on our team but a damn fine leader. he has the respect of the players and is a real blue collar worker in our magnificent backline.
Port Power "you were wrong" to let him go,
Long may he reign the CHROME MOTORBIKE.

I wasn't too sure at the start of the year if Harley was right job for captain but obviously the club knew what they were doing. I would have thought maybe Lingy or Chapman would have got the job. But hey, I'm not complaining!
The past couple of years out with injury with his illio-tibial(sp?) band has let him down but he bounced back this year and is looking leaner stronger and healthier.
He's very highly respected at the club and with the fans. He's done a fantastic job this year in the back line, always backing himself, trusting his judgments. He always goes for a mark at first and has confidence in his team mates they'll get the crumbs (if) he doesn't mark...which is rare anyway.
Sadly I wonder how much gas is left in his tank.
