View Full Version : What Happened To What A Year?
About 2 months ago, Channel 9 began a new series of What A Year, hosted by Bert Newton & Julia Zamero.
The show has since vanished with no publicity - most of the times, it is reported in the media if a show fails and is axed quickly (such as The Cooks, or Yazmine's Getting Married). There has also been no mention of the show moving to another night, or returning later in the year.
Does anyone know what became of this show, as it was enjoyable enough to watch, with Bert and Julia doing a good job presenting it.
Boned.
Bert has been a poisoned chalice at Nine.

It was fine with Mike Munro in it, but they wanted to kill the show by replacing him with a dill.

I think he's now known as Bert 'Kiss of Death' Newton
He's killed What a Year and 20 to 1 [bring back Bud]
Why do people knock Bert so much?
The guy is an Australian legend, and he is good at what he does. His jokes may be a bit corny sometimes, but that is part of the humour. Bert has been a versatile presenter & actor for many years, and he can laugh at himself.
As for Julia, she looked great in some of the retro outfits she wore while presenting the show.

We knock him because he's terrible at the moment.

Bert was funny ten years ago, but he has gone stale and is trying to be funny when he just hasn't got it anymore. His tryhard humour has killed the three shows he's hosted since he re-joined nine.
Bert seems to be a bit of a Bruce.
Everyone says they've lost it, I still reckon they never had it to begin with. Whatever the case, they're both shithouse these days.

I beg to differ with Bruce, I watched an old tape of a 1999 game he commentated and he was much better. The thing with Bert is though, there may be a reason why he hosted Good Morning Australia (a terrible show) for more than a decade - he just isn't cut out for a top level prime time show.

Bert works as a sidekick, not a main man. In his golden years he was a sidekick.

Megan Gale was 10 times better than Zemiro.

These flashback/nostalgia shows that Channels 7 and 9 keep turning out are ****ing awful. There's nothing with flashback/nostalgia shows as such, but these ones always contain lame fake "memories of the time" comments from anyone associated with the channel and half baked comedians making shit "I CAN'T BELIEVE I WORE THAT!!" jokes. It's just awful to watch :thumbsd:

I think the over kill in 2006 with endless shows showing the same old tired clips from yesteryear has bored people.
It could have been anyone presenting this show and people still wouldn't watch it.
As for Bert..should have retired when TEN boned him. Now many of his golden years will be erased by the younger generation due to this sad period in his career. Just retire gracefully Bert..Gen Y are very cruel and unforgiving.

I think Bert is a victim of tall poppy syndrome, which annoys me. This is so common in Australia. Lisa McCune is another example - people have knocked this beautiful, talented actress at every turn. And while her current show is a dud, this is in no way her fault. Then there is Steve Irwin, who has done so much for Australian Wildlife and Tourism. Now that Irwin is gone, people don't want to speak ill of the dead - so they critisize his widow and daughter.
At the other end of the scale, some AFL and NRL players make appalling errors of judgement - and ignorant fans treat them as heros!
To the people who critisize Bert Newton, Lisa McCune and the Irwins I ask you - what the hell have you ever done that was so great?

Absolutely agree. It adds nothing to the show other than and only serves to let you know who's out of work at the moment. It's sad to see so many people lining up to dust off tired old jokes. Feels like I'm reading every Smashing Pumpkins review from the past year.
