View Full Version : Masten, Palmer, Morton or Cotchin?

I'm going to assume that the worst happens for a second, and Juddy decides to head back to Victoria. We would most likely end up with a pick in the 1-4 range.
The above 4 are the outstanding midfield talent in the draft. All bar Cotchin are Western Australian's, meaning the "go home" factor would never come into play, but Cotchin appears to be a class above everyone else, despite having a not so spectacular Teal Cup.
Which of the 4 would we have a look at? Would we look at a non-midfielder?
Were Cale's last name not Morton, I would suggest him straight up. But people both here and on other forum's have made the suggestion that he thinks abit more of himself than he should.
Assuming we end up with pick 3, I'm thinking Masten. Works in the club shop, you just cant go past loyalty. Good decision maker, and any footskill improvements that may be needed, can be taught.
I'm still new to this drafting game tho, and I'm interested in other people's thoughts.
I still stand by my saying that Palmer is the best midfielder to come out of WA since Simon Black, AWESOME player. Carves up WAFL like no other

I'd take Myers over Morton.
But I'm finding it hard to split Masten and Palmer.
Then there's Cotchin.. this is getting difficult.

His gut running & pace advantage will be nullified as soon as he walks into an AFL game
He reminds me of a shorter, marginally slower Jason Winderlich in that he has to run damn hard even at wafl level to gain possession of the ball. add to that he is one sided and runs forward of the play at every opportunity & you would want to have some seriously good inside midfielders already in the team.
Masten is far more suited to AFL football and is a great mix of inside & outside talent in the Marc Murphy mould.
Morton is another soft but skilled over sized flanker, like a taller Fiora but not as athletic (Fiora has the big leap and ability to take the hanger) maybe closer to Grant Birchall without the genuine pace (Birchall recorded a low 2.9 at DC) in regard to the style of play & skills on offer, also about 15kg's (at least) from being AFL quality for his size.
Cotchin is the real talent in this group, like a more midfield ready Alan Didak or at a stretch Cousins (at half forward) recorded a 2.96 & has very good hands in traffic which will be a great at AFL level and kicks goals.
so
1. Cotchin
2. Masten
3. Morton
4. Palmer
I also don't like taking a WA kid for the sake of him being from WA, they will often bring their bad habits with them (if they have any) rather than having to adopt to the club culture in another state. The interstate kids just seem more mouldable after they are overt the initial home sickness.

That's what people said about Buddy Franklin and he's going OK.
An ego is no reason to overlook a good player.

You have a point.
If I could kick like him I might have an ego too...
Another Morton with the same ego problem no thanks.

IF, and it's a massive hypothetical if....we ended up with Pick 1, not 3..... would we be likely to take Kruezer?
There is talk Carlton may not necessarily pick him with 1, but if they don't get him I'd expect he'd go at 2. If we get Pick 3 as some are suggesting, it will likey come down this West Aussie quartet, but if we had 1????
Failing that, on what I've seen, I think Palmer will be the first West Aussie to go.
