They have played in and lost 3 B prelim finals.
They have played in and lost 3 B prelim finals.
So what ... they did their best on the day & it wasn't good enough. Seems to me that you are the perfect example of negativity - you consistently self praise thyself for being first on bigfooty with a story that everyone else is aware of. Maybe you need this type of self gratification to justify your menial existence.
Easy to pick off losing teams - just wonder what you pretend to do in real life??

They deserve all they get.
We had to put up with all their crap for the last six or so months about how they were better than all the other teams in B section.

they were pretty vocal weren't they beacon. I can tell you that no-one at HQ is disapointed they will not be gracing A Section next year (if ever).

circa 1999 First semi Old Ess v BT. Old Ess infront by 36 points at 3qtr time and kicked the first goal of last. decided to drop gun CHF (Fletcher) as loose man in defence only to see BT rattle on 8 unanswered sausage to salute by 6 points.
Was a nice feeling concidering after round 18 when they beat us at their ground by 6 points they proceeded to sing the club song in the social rooms about 45 minutes after the game had finshed......

2001 second semi final saw Old Essendon win by 1 point over the Rovers, then proceeded to celebrate if they had won the grand final. 2 weeks later, the Rovers thrashed Old Essendon by 10 goals.

i want to nominate beaumaris u/19s as one of the biggest chokers. all year they promised that by the end of the year they will have a full team that will be invincable and they will take all before them. they had worked all year on qualifying certain players for finals. beaumaris (2nd on the ladder) in round 18 against top placed stbedes had their full available teamto choose from and had stkilda scouts watching 2 of their players. beaumaris chose to play their worst possible team, resting their best 10 players who had a light training session instead. they deliberately threw the game becoz they did not want to show stbedes how good their team was b4 the 2nd semi final being played the next week between the two sides. stbedes were pissed off at the disrespect beaumaris showed. beaumaris talked it up the whole game that next week they will smash stbedes. stbedes went on to beat beaumaris in round18 by 100pts and also beat them in the 2nd semi with beaumaris's "invincables" by 40 points. beaumaris continued to talk the talk and promised they wood beat stbedes in the granny but lost the prelim to old brighton. beaumaris went out in straight sets. a team of champions but far from a champion team

What about Beaumaris in 1998, possibly the best team all season that year. The Sharks thrashed Old Mentonians, then thought that the grand final was a foregone conclusion to the effect that they had stickers, T-shirts proclaiming 'BEAUMARIS C GRADE PREMIERS 1998'-all very well, but was before the grand final. Hampton Rovers beat Beaumaris by 6 points in one of the biggest VAFA grand final upsets of all time.

How about Eltham in D4.
Last year went out in straight sets and this year, got smashed in the 2nd Semi, just got home in the Prelim and then got smashed again in the big one.

Aquinas had the Herald Sun print "Aquinas 2007 Premiers....Go Bloods" posters to hand out after their GF wins on Saturday. Both sides lost, $2000 well spent...not!

No way. UHS-VU are a great side. They finished on top of the ladder and were always going to be hard to beat. Eltham tried hard in both finals against them, but still go up a grade. Beating St. Marys was also full of merit. The Pap / Army show was always going to be hard to curtail. Good season by the turtles. Should do well in D3.

If that is correct, that is too funny. Never take GF wins for granted folks. Always expect the unexpected.

I think people are getting confused.. we aren't voting on 1 off's here..
OEG have it deep seeded in everyone associated with the club's mind's.. It shows by how they reacted at the 3rd qrt break.. all they could talk about was NOT choking like they have in the past.. who speaks about choking during a game???
And their 19's went out in straight sets too... Seems like a big issue at the club!!
But in defence of OEG.. it's hard to play when you have a silver back gorilla hanging off your neck.. but I think next year is going to be a little harder with king kong being brought back to life!
** Having said that, I do enjoy listening to stories of cocky teams getting wiped!! absolutely nothing better than beating a team that takes something for granted like a premiership is their devine right!!

the best story ive heard of a cocky team getting wat they deserved was a few years ago now but one team went through the year unbeaten and smashed every team by 100 points week in week out. there was no way a team wood even challenge this team in the finals. the team who came up against them in the grand final, whitefriars i think, had got smashed by the 100 odd during the season too. whitefriars thought that their only hope was that if it rained. so whitefriars got the hose out and drenched their own ground to train in wet conditions. forecast for the grandfinal was fine. out of nowhere a couple hours b4 the grand final the skies opened up and just bucketed down. whitefriars surprised their unbeaten cocky openents and put up a great challenge and came from behind to win by the barest of margains

I forgot to mention Hawthorn in D4 last year who were unbeaten last year between May and September but lost the GF to Powerhouse by 10 goals.
Then this season, in D3 the mighty Hawks finish second and go out in straight sets.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of w5nkers!

Old Essendon's chokings are quite a common occurence and I have to admit being part of the 2000-2004 campaigns:
'99 Lost D Grade Prelim
'00 Lost D Grade 2nd Semi in overtime after leading during the match
'00 Lost D Grade Grand Final by 120+ points
'01 Lost C Grade Grand Final by 10+ goals
'03 Lost B Grade 2nd Semi by 10 goals after leading by 5 goals at half time
'03 Lost B Prelim by 6 goals
'05 Lost B Grade first semi
'06 Lost B Grade Prelim by 10+ goals after being level at half time
'07 Lost B Grade 2nd Semi by 80+ point
'07 Lost B Grade Prelim by 6-7 goals after leading by 8 goals during 2nd qtr.
Fair list of lost opportunities.

And the word is that there is a fair bit of internal turmoil down there. Likely to lose significant numbers of players.

The Collins;notably Matt to Old Carey or Old Camberwell.

I voted for my old team BS. Sadly, the stats don't lie.
I could almost be solely responsible for the 2003 failure, having kicked 2.5 in the first half where we tripled Whitefriars scoring shots but were only 5 goals up. I stood in the goals square (other end) and watched "buckets" Carrigg, Power and Hilton from Whitefriars put on a clinic in the third stanza helping them to 11 goals to 1. Game over.
From what I here, it is the same unaccountable players who don't do the hard running

I would have to agree Slay Master G, it would seem that Old Essendon have never had a game plan under any of the numerous coaches that they have had over the years.
OEG really play a loose unaccountable brand of footy, that works well in home away season and works as they have a fairly talented buch of players. However in finals footy it just doesn't stand up. Finals results show this
Quite often OEG will get involved in a shootout, and just rely on kicking more goals.
They need to find a coach that has a game plan and can show the boys some accountability and discipline. Until that happens they will forever flounder in B grade.
There is enough talent going through the club, however until the right coach comes along and can get the best out of its players and install some discipline and accountability along with a solid game plan then the boys will continue to get found out under the pressure of finals footy.
They need a coach that is just out of the game, that understands modern football with rotations through the midfield and setting up attack from defence etc, and a coach or mentor that relates well to young blokes and someone who can install some discipline.
I think St bedes are an example of a club that has gone from strength to strength under there young coach.
Slay Master G u trained under Pat Hawkins, a very astute thinker and can see the difference in the level of coaches that OEG have had compared to a Pat Hawkins or A grade coach.

Pat Hawkins wasn't a master tactician but what he did have was a simple and reliable game plan and most importantly the utmost respect of his playing list. He was young and very intelligent and could relate to most of the players. They were prepared to do anything for him, and not just for themselves.
Good sides are built from the backline (Swans, Eagles, Geelong compared with the forward heavy front running StKilda), Collegians gave away very few big scores in the past 2 years. Pat put his 6 most reliable players in the backline, Stone & Arnott for the run off half back Mooney, Roach and Harris on the last line who each week sacrificed their game to stop their opponent. The midfield was a mix between defending and attacking players.
OE are blessed with a huge number of attacking players but not enough defending types who are prepared to play tight for 4 quarters. You need a balance. Finals football will tell you that. OE can kick a score but can't stop an avalanche.

When you look at the list Slay Master G complied re Old Essendon finals failures over the past 7-8 years, it's amazing to think that on most of the occasions they had the chance to go up to A Section, but shot themselves in the foot. Old Essendon are a good team in the home & away season, but come finals time have a bad case of the wobbles. For Old Essendon to answer to the criticism, the Bombers would have to prove to the VAFA community that they are a very good team by winning finals on a more consistent basis, but at the moment it's just not happening.

Minor clarification SMG..don't want to dance on your grave...but
'99 Lost D Grade Semi Final (after being 5 goals up 5 min into the last quarter). Didn't even make the prelim - went out in straight sets a week earlier.
....And to make matters worse, on the far wing at Sandy, one of your players said to me half way through the last quarter "You guys have got this" - while OEG still lead by 17 points. Disgrace.

It would be fair to say that nobody from the '99 side would still be in the Senior team.

The guy that said it to me is still playing. You might be suprised who he was. Don't need to publish names on this thread coz he was a ripping bloke on the field (Most of them in '99 were - a bit soft, but ok otherwise).
