View Full Version : Recruiting WA players
Let me just say that I am not bitter that Judd is leaving - its his choice and everyone has the right to do what they want.
Juddy has given us more than excellent service in his 6 years at the Eagles but I cant help but think that because this is suck a high profile case that it will make the clubs go for home based players in the draft from now on.
I know that every club has to deal with this but it is becoming more and more of a major reason to leave.
I wonder if it came down to a decision to draft a good kid from WA or a really good kid from elsewhere if they would pick the WA kid due to the homesickness?

As awesome as this bloke WAS...
I grimaced when we drafted Judd. I was hoping they went for Polak!
Now, yes Judd has been far bigger and better player than Polak. But who knows what we might have done with a West Aussie, that Freo were unable to do.
This sucks :thumbsd:

Hmmmmm.... Polak hey.... I guess we could have done something with him but what Judd gave us cant be rivaled.
I am praying we get something out of this - I hope we dont get screwed.

It'll be interesting to see if this puts WC off recruiting Vic players for a while.

It won't, we are smarter than that. Players leave sometime. We got the good end of it with Stinger and Chicky. Now we have the other side. Shit happens.

I would rather the 6 years of good service that Judd has given. SA clubs face similar problems. Nick Stevens going back to Carlton for nothing was a classic case in point. I think if you get 100 good games from a player it does not matter where he comes from. You got Tyson Stenglein from the Crows but I valued his service while at the Crows and would never bag him as many of your supporters are going to bag Chris Judd.
As a parent I would hate my son being drafted to an interstate club and not seeing his development. Often these draftees tangle up with a local girl and then suddenly they are lost forever.
Be thankful for the credit that Chris Judd has brought the West Coast Eagles.

It will probably reignite the draft from home debate, but overall, for the number of people that get drafted interstate, not all that many 'go home'. If two players are pretty close, then absolutely grab the 'home' one. This year should be easy enough to do that with the likes of Palmer, Masten, Rance, Morton coming through. But if we end up with Pick 1 or 3, and want a ruckman...it has to be Kruezer.
Unfortunately if it does happen and involves a big name player, it makes a big impact, but for every Jeff White, Tyson Stenglein, Chris Judd, Jeff Farmer....there are plenty more Jonathon Brown, Matthew Pavlich, David Wirrpanda types who stay with one club in spite of overtures to go home. I thought Wirra was high risk when we got him, from memory he was terribly homesick, but he will retire a one club player, and wonderful servant of the club.
As long as players who do want to go home don't screw their club on the way out. In almost all cases the club has given the player their first chance at AFL footy.
I can understand Judd's decision in one sense...I was promoted to a job in Melbourne....lived there 4 years, when the job ended, guess where I have come back to...but I have some family who went across there with work as well and have never come back.

Yeah but Judd's job was not done, he had only started to rebuild the eagles, he has walked away from the team he agreed to lead.

A bit off topic but witnessing Daniel Rich tear it up in the Prelim for Subi today made me hope we go for him next year. Star in the making.

1. I think you'll find majority of supporters while dissapointed now that Juddy has gone wont boo him, if they do they dont understand.
2.I for one am greatful for the service he gave our club, he was a superstar and champion for us, hopefully we are able to get someone half as good to play for us next year.
