View Full Version : Rudd cant name tax thresholds

Guys this is a bad sign. It has now emerged that Kevn Rudd does not even understand the very basic elements of our tax system:
Rudd doesn't know his tax: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22445511-29277,00.html
Federal Treasurer Peter Costello says it is clear Kevin Rudd doesn't understand the current income tax system, after the Opposition Leader slipped up on a question about tax thresholds.
Visiting Queanbeyan today, Mr Rudd was asked by a journalist to name the tax rates and where thresholds kick in.
Mr Rudd replied: "Well, as of July 1, if you went through the four thresholds, I think the high threshold kicks in I think at $175,000, then I think it cascades down the spectrum.''
Mr Costello seized on the blunder, attacking Mr Rudd in parliament and pressing him to release Labor's tax policy.
"He couldn't name a single rate, he couldn't name a single threshold, and the one threshold that he named of $175,000 ... just doesn't exist,'' Mr Costello told parliament.
"Since the Labor Party demands an election to be called on a daily basis, you would think they might have the decency of releasing a policy so that people can know what it is.''
Mr Costello said tax thresholds don't cascade.
"Cascade is a form of beer, it is not a form of tax threshold.
"This would be amusing if it were not serious.''
He said the leader of the opposition did not know what the Australian tax system was.
"He doesn't understand it and he should never be put in charge of people's mortgages, their businesses or their jobs.
"Underneath the glib responses, underneath the media stunts ... there is no economic substance.
"And now he has been exposed as being naked when it comes to understanding the tax system.
"He is a leader of the Opposition on trainer wheels.''

That's because Labor plan to abolish income tax.

But seriously Dom, can we trust this guy to look after the economy if he doesnt even know basics like the tax thresholds?
The world economy is in a really uncertain phase at the moment. The US is a 50% chance of heading into a recession, the sub-prime crisis is spreading through the world, average Australian's are mortgaged to the hilt.
It seems like a bad time for a guy like Rudd to take the reigns.

Anytime for you is a bad time for Rudd to take the reigns.
Shouldn't you post in the politics, society and religion board?

Could these Liberal newsletters be re-directed to the SCP board?

Tony Clifton started all this shite. He started a thread with a direct lift from the Kevin07 website.
I am merely reciprocating.

You have posted a few more threads than him though.

Strozo, I think the moderators need to make a decision regarding the Purple Hoard Board: Will purely political threads be allowed?
If they are allowed, then I am going to create threads when I think there is a newsworthy event. I am not going to sit back while Tony Clifton posts blatant Kevin07 lifts from the Kevon07 website.
Having said that, if the Mods want to ban political discussions then I will go along with that.
Although I might say that at least the political threads are more topical compared to threads such as: "what is Lach having for dinner tonight".

I don't mind a bit of political talk, but when your posting this stuff everyday it is pretty tiring.

Seems to me that now is a perfectly good time for Rudd to take the reigns. Howard and Costello have created an economy where, unless you are earning big dollars or get a decent inheritance, you have no chance of paying off any of your household debt.
And don't give us that crap about the world economy. Costello has been telling us for 11 years that the Australian economy is in a strong position due to him. You can't take the credit for the good times and then blame the bad times on outside influences. Unless you are John Worsfold.

It might be worth Ripper/Sabre creating a politics sticky thread on this board? The election is still a long way off and there will be very little footy to discuss post draft.

I think when you are a staunch supporter of either political party it's hard to judge that type of thing without being biased. To you trusting Rudd with the economy is like trusting Daniel Kerr to hang onto your carton of beer for the weekend.
If Rudd wins the election and the economy continues to worsen (which it probably will) it will all be Rudd's fault. If Howard wins the election and the economy continues to worsen (which it almost certainly will) you'll say "Thank f*** we still have Howard, imagine how bad it would be if Labor had won."
Just like footy when you're passionate about one team it is hard to see things from the oppositions perspective. But my teams definately going to beat yours! ;)

My thread was started to encourage people to enroll to vote. Never mentioned it was a Howard conspiracy, till you got on your high horse.
I thought it was honest to name the source of the information so that people could see where it came from. I even added a little embarrassed face smiley.

Fair enough...
So much Fear Mongering about Rudd.... can we have the strong labor supporters chime in as well just so we have some balance to the debate.
I tend to not be solely based on one pary when I vote and have swung a few times, but all the negative Rudd remakes makes me dislike the Liberals more and more this time round for some reason.

Apparently he had heart surgery a few years ago too. I wonder who in the Liberal party will come out with the lines about "not having the ticker for the job"? Usually, I'd bet Joe Hockey was the man for this, but given he walked the Kokoda Trail with Rudd last year, I don't think he'd stoop that low.
Back on topic, sorry. I don't know what my tax threshold is, nor do I know what my tax rate is. While I'm surprised that Rudd didn't know, I don't think it's that important. Kevin Rudd doesn't write all of the policies on his own.
I'm quite happy to discuss politics in this forum. So long as GJ and his wife don't mind (or is that Belnakor and her husband?). Don't want to upset the big end of town.
