I watched this again last night and i think, if you were able to class this as a romantic comedy (and why not) then it is BY FAR the best of its kind.

Which brings me to my next point, i think the poms have the yanks well and truly covered in terms of producing quality rom coms...

Does it have one funny moment in it?

It has MANY funny moments in it. I would call it a black comedy but i see your point. The humour isn't obvious.

It was funny in that someone could prefer Julia Roberts to Natalie Portman. WTF?

do you know george?

^ LOL.

I found the performances to be quite excellent by the main cast, but the characters themselves were a bit irritating (especially Clive Owen, absolutely hated his character). This is not helped by the odd dialogue and the 'nothing' plot (although it's probably a film about 'feelings'/emotions/relationships more than anything else).

Doesn't seem like a comedy to me, although if you were to compare it to another romantic comedy in 'Failure to Launch' or 'Because I Said So', then 'Closer' is infinitely better than both of those Hollywood films.

Bit of a stretch to class this as a British film. Written by a Brit, set there and with the male leads being poms, but it has an American director and producer, yank female leads and crew paid with greenback cash.

It is mid-Atlantic production.

Loved it.

I have some similarities between how this film was made, along with Dogville.
You can find faults with both, probably a lot of faults in terms of some of the elements which make up a film, but no film has explored the themes of each film so brutally and uniquely.

I love character and dialogue also, so films like this and Before Sunset/Sunrise i find most interesting.

I loved it too. Thought too it was going to be yet another cheeseball RomCom, but was anything but....

I'm a fan of good romantic comedies (I refuse to use the term 'RomCom') and if the beautiful + talented Natalie Portman is in it?

I'll definitely give it a look. :thumbsu:

And someone chose Julia Roberts over Natalie Portman?

Thanks to the spoiler, I'll already know what a douche this guy is before he becomes one. Probably better that way.

I thought that was the best acting performance I have seen from Julia Roberts - the film is worth it for the Natalie Portman in the strip club scene

Never been to a strip club myself but Natalie Portman doesn't really look like your stereotypical nudie dancer.

I've been ejected from Olympic Park, Hindmarsh Stadium, Bob Jane Stadium, Telstra Dome and the Crazy Horse Cinema.

I never lit a flare in the Crazy Horse Cinema....

Natalie Portman was brilliant, but i agree the stripclub scene with her looked strange. I dont find her attractive though anyway, so maybe thats it.
