View Full Version : Like to have a punt?

I have a bit of a punt here and there. Sometimes just to add spice to a contest or othertimes where there looks to be a bit of value.
One thing that caught my eye is that sportingbet are offering odds on where bomber thompson will end up next year:
I would have thought he is a sure thing at Geelong but they are paying $1.85 for him to stay.
$1.85 for him to coach essendon and $31 for anything else.
Is this good value or do you think he is a real shot at the bombers? I assume the blokes setting the odds know more than me and am really surprised that they consider him even money to leave geelong for the bombers.
Thoughts?

He is a big chance to leave the cats. He is still fuming (apparently) with the way he was treated by the board last year. The odds are right, 50-50.

I missed the thread on the mainpage. So much for me trying to keep this hush hush, bigfooty has backed him in from $2.50 to $1.85 to stay at Geelong. In the space of 30 minutes I now think essendon might be good value LOL.

Same thing happened with the Judd market, he opened up at $12 to go to the pies then within hours it had shortened to $3.50. Those who got in early will be looking forward to trade week.
With spring carnival on the horizon we should keep this thread open for those who enjoy a punt.
For those looking for an omen bet Purple Moon is currently paying $13 to win the Melbourne Cup.

For those who are greyhound fans, here a some tips for Mandurah tonight 27/09...
Race 5 - No 1. Swispec - Be very surprised if it didnt finish 1st or 2nd, should be favourite around the $3-$3.50 mark.
Race 10 - No. 6. Taupe - Trainer is the dad of a mate, should win
Race 12 - No. 2. Valdahlah - Take on trust with this dog, can be slow out of the boxes as he did on his last 2 races and got checked to the rear to run last. Was on him 3 starts back when he jumped straight to the front from box 5 and won by 3 - 4 lengths at 9/1. Each Way

Well given that Essendon have got a coach, probably a strong chance that speculation that Thompson will leave will be a load of rubbish (as per usual).

Should we have a competition to determine the number one punter on this board? Everyone starts with an imaginary $20, to bet with on whatever they like across the weekend. The grand final, the races, greyhounds, gloucester park, premier league, whatever. Post your bet(s) totalling $20, and whoever has the most on Monday is the winner.

Also don't even talk about performances from dogs, in the space of 2 weeks one of our dogs has been suspended from Mandurah and if it wants to race at Cannington again must run a satisfactory trial. The dishlicker is on it's last chance.

Apparently he hates the dome, which essentially narrows it down to a two horse race. Melbourne has the worst list of the four clubs, I'll be surprised if he doesn't select the pies.

If it was just a matter of Judd choosing a club I'd say Pies aswell.
I think Juddy might try to do the right thing by West Coast and nominate two clubs. Of these two clubs I think collingwood are less likely to outbid the other. Malthouse will probably take a philisophic point of view and back his kids in. The other club would probably justify paying a bit extra for Judd's marketability.

Yea West River Charley is a good horse. Form had been a bit ordinary of late but back to his best today. Poor run from Keyton Grace - although she hasnt run a decent 1200m yet.
Had the first 3 winners at Belmont, all were a bit short tho. Had that many seconds at Flemington.
Keep a watch on Dehere O'Dedog, first start today and was 2 lengths from the second last horse hitting the straight, ran about 5th and made up alot of ground.

Great run by West River Charley. But on that race, get on Beat The Storm. He was so close in second. (Actually don't. I want better divvies :D) I have a close connection with the horse, my old man was a part of the syndicate that owned Beat The Storm's half sister, Stormy Time. Stormy Time had a very bright future and looked like she would possibly be better than Beat The Storm but tragically she broke a hind leg in her first start at Pinjarra Park and had to be destroyed :(. Worst day of my life, I'll never go back to Pinjarra Park after that.
Did anyone have a few places on Scenic Shot (the forgotten West Aussie horse) in the Turnbull? At $23 the place I was spewing I didn't! But then I backed Star Risca and Far Horizons each way at Belmont Park so I had a pretty good day anyway :D

He ran a very good second and has pulled up very well according to the trainer (Brent Larsson). He paid $3.30 in the ring for the place, was quite happy to get a piece of that. But for tomorrow, my picks would be:
Perth Race 2 Number 6 Far Horizons
Been excellent since crossing from the East. The main danger to him is Arctic Park.
Perth Race 6 Number 1 Beat The Storm
Unlucky second to West River Charley in his last run. Raped by the handicapper but he's good enough to win, even in the best company.
Throw in Douro Valley and Anamato as value bets in the Caulfield Cup and hopefully you'll have a few winners!

Good win by Far Horizons (paid $4 and $1.50) and Beat The Storm ran fourth, but he was only beaten by Paul Harvey. Absolutely crap ride, got him horribly stuck in a pocket and never made it out until the 150m. It's a credit to the class of the horse that in that 150m he pulled in most of the field carrying 58kg worth of idiot and only came up half a length short of New Spice. Keep following New Spice too, that was a great run.

I hope so. This weekend was the plan as he pulled up really well after his first run, but I haven't been able to talk to the syndicate manager for a few days now. I've just seen a forecast for rain on Thursday and Friday which will obviously soften up the track but I don't think that will have too much bearing on whether he runs or not. Probably 90% certain he will be in.
Sadly I don't think we'll get good divvies for him, but if he's in, he's worth a few bob each way I reckon. If you're going, you'll probably see our syndicate there. There's about 20 of us and we'll all be standing on the steps booting home 'Ginger'. Keep an eye out ;)

I did one the other day and for $2 investment on a multi horse trifecta made a tidy profit on the $2.05 return.:o
Basically if you couple up combinations of horses in tri's quaddies etc. and lets say the total of your ticket without the flexi option is $200 but you flexi bet and only invest $20(10% of actual cost) then you will receive 10% of the winning dividend if it lobs.

Previously you could only get a half stake or a full stake on quaddies, quartets and trifectas. Now you can have any stake you want.
At Ascot on Saturday I liked 5 horses in the first leg of the quaddie then 4 in the other 3 races. 5 x 4 x 4 x 4 would have cost $320 for a full stake. I only wanted to spend $50, so I marked $50 on the ticket, which gave me 15.6%. The quaddie paid $2,406 so I got 15.6% of that winning stake back, which was $375.30.

Ascot Race 3 Number 4 Rich And Wild
^Read up there a few posts^
Ascot Race 8 Number 10 No Questions
Good horse resuming in easier company than he's used to. Won a recent Belmont Park trial. Should go well.
Moonee Valley Race 4 Let Go Thommo
You'll get a good price for him as he's up against Miss Andretti and Gold Edition, arguably the nation's two best sprinters. But he hit the line very hard last weekend to run a very respectable third in a strong field and given another 50m would've won. This is 100m further and should suit him. Good value more than anything else, but in a 5 horse field (!) anything can happen.

None of my published selections came in this week! Oops. I did have a very good winner though in My Time, which won the fifth at Ascot. Paid $8 in the ring. Also had a few on the nose of Royale Harvest in the sixth, coming in at $5. So a good day for me.
I wasn't too disappointed with Rich And Wild. He got a tough draw (barrier 9 in a field of 10) but he got a great jump. Trouble is, that meant he had to go to the front or stay 3 deep. He went forward and was made to work very hard by the two horses inside him to get there. He's definitely not suited to running in front as his best asset is a good turn of foot and he's still building some stamina. But he battled on well and was only 3 and a quarter lengths away in sixth despite not being suited by the way the race was run and having little luck. Hopefully he learned a bit and I think the run will do him a lot of good. We'll do it all again in 2 weeks if all goes to plan. I just hope we get a good draw next time so he can have a bit more flexibility in how to run the race.

Yea he had a tough run in front, especially down the back of the course going into that pretty strong head wind. Would have taken a bit out of him id say.
Is he backing up again this week or having the 2-3 week break again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly sure that at this stage of the season all of the 2 year old events are a fortnight apart (have been so far). So I don't think there will be a race for him this weekend even if we wanted to give him a one week turnaround. Saturday the 10th of November is the plan at this stage. :thumbsu: :)

Hard to find a clear winner this week. I'd have Beat The Storm, but he has to carry the weight of the world on his back. Star Risca, Royale Harvest and Capuchin will all be too short for me. I might just pin my hopes on one Perth race this week.
Ascot Race 7 Number 7 Bull Durham
I first started following him 2 starts back when he dead-heated with Diamond Highway in a very good run. Last week he very nearly got up against a good winner. He really made Dane's Mystery earn it. He's worth a couple each way on that form but I think this is a bit harder.

So who is everyone picking for the Melbourne Cup? This race has been the source of some of my biggest collects, seem to pick the winner more often than not. Over the last 10 or so years anyway.
This year I think there are 5 genuine chances.
Master O'Reilly - Current fav and deserves that tag, massive run to win the Caulfield Cup. 4th fastest in history if I remember correctly and was running away at the end.
Purple Moon - Was an eye catching run in the Caulfield Cup, got blocked and held up in the straight. Got out too late but rattled home.
Douro Valley - Sort of a suprise packet this horse, caught my eye when winning with Darren Beadman's last ride in Australia. Didnt have the same acceleration in the straight as Master O'Reilly in the Caulfield Cup but was a good run and should continue his form in the Melbourne Cup.
Maybe Better - Hasnt shown his best form but is a class act and will be in the firing line.
Zipping - Previous place getter in the cup. Barrier may be its down fall but with a bit of luck should be in the thick of things.
Out of those 5, my pick is Purple Moon with Damien Oliver.
Im actually going to have an each way bet on Tungsten Strike. Scared of this horse to be honest. I have a feeling it may stride 4 lengths clear hitting the straight and may not be run down.

Zipping was 4th in the cup last year. He's never placed in it before.
I like Zipping and Princess Coup. I'm generally not real keen on the kiwi horses but Princess Coup has really shown some form. 2nd in the Mackinnon and 3rd in the Caulfield Cup is just about the best form in the race IMO. Zipping is one of the very few horses who will actually appreciate the step up in distance. If he can get a clear run in the straight without having to go too wide during the running he will be hard to beat. His turn of foot is deadly.
I can't quite find who will be the third leg of my trfecta. I fancy Blue Monday, Purple Moon and Master O'Reilly but I can't quite decide. The Fuzz could be there and I fancy Maybe Better as a mud runner too. Ugh, I've always found the Melbourne Cup to be a mongrel betting race. I'm one of the minority who gets a lot more excited by the Cox Plate.

So close yet so far for Purple Moon. I got on at fixed odds Sunday at $10/$3 so made a bit of a profit but I'd still be drunk now if he had hung on considering how heavily I backed it.
Anyone else cop this from eagles workmates "Typical purples, second as usual!"

I think the same thing. Each year I narrow it down to about 5 horses and cover them so that if either of the 2 I like most win I'll clean up and if any of the other 3 win I'll make a small profit or break even. This year is only the second time in 12 Cups that I haven't had anything on the winner.

Hard luck Dom and Pistol. Mighty run from Purple Moon. Sadly the same could not be said for Princess Coup, who never looked likely, and Zipping, who had every chance but surprisingly didn't seem to get the trip.
I don't know how anyone could've backed Efficient considering his form. I knew he had the talent, but ruled a line through him after he showed absolutely nothing all campaign. Until the day it mattered, of course.
Also, it was very sad to see Bay Story go down earlier in the day. It's never easy to see such a fine animal sustaining an injury so severe that they have to be destroyed.
On a brighter note, Rich And Wild is in the field for the Nicholas Martinovich 40 Year Membership Plate this Saturday. He had a bit more luck in the draw this time, he got barrier 1! Here's hoping he'll appreciate the step up to 1100m and get over the line first.

Great run by Rich And Wild! Had $20 on the nose, and I also have a $10 double with Pure Black in the third and a couple of trebles with those 2 along with New Spice and West River Charley in the 7th.
I got close on Tuesday then donated $300 to the Packers last night so a treble or even a double would be nice.

Woohoo! Rich And Wild did everything right today. Jumped with the field, settled 3rd or 4th on the rails, got out just after the turn and showed why we're all so excited about him by putting in a great sprint. Absolutely ecstatic! Nice little earner too, got $6 the win in the ring. Shame your doubles didn't work out dom. Pure Black was a certainty beaten.
His next move is complicated. If we were to continue as usual, he would be racing on Railway Stakes day in two weeks. However, I don't think there is a two year old race that day and instead there is one this week coming. During running today he sustained a slight graze to one of his legs so that will need to heal quickly if he is to run. The plan is to nominate him for this Saturday coming and scratch if we draw outside or he doesn't pull up well. Also, it looks like he may only have one or two more runs before taking a well earned holiday.

Field down to 8 for Rich And Wild's race, bringing him in to barrier 5. Still 50/50 about scratching him. Personally, I hope we scratch as he's only had a week off, he has to carry 57kg and he was galloped on last Saturday. He has a lot of potential and it would be a shame to push him too hard too soon. The only thing is that this is quite a big race with a bigger purse than any of the other two year old events so far this season. He's probably the best horse in the field but it's still not worth it for mine.

Yeah from all reports he did pretty well but was just wasn't quite good enough to win. Didn't start well apparently. Not too disappointed though, he's yet to run a bad race. He's already paid for himself and he's working on paying for his half sister now (we also own the half sister). If he has another run, I think he'll go up to 1200m which should suit him a lot better.
I can't figure out why Exotic Nights always starts at such long odds? Good quality horse I reckon. Dunno if I'd back it next start though. It's nominated for the Railway and the placing in the Colonel Reeves may have gotten him in. 25th in the order of entry as of Monday. Innovation is 30th while I'm at it.
I can't believe Dark Target. Damn fine horse but it sounds like Staeck couldn't get him to settle today, gifting the Guineas to Megatic (which is also top quality).
Got the quaddie today but I was disappointed to find my $10 investment (got me just under 10% divvy) only netted $15.60 :o. Oh well.

Rich And Wild cost either $24 000 or $26 000. I can't remember which it is. But anyway, he was a steal considering he's already won $43 650 in stake money, plus picking up a Westspeed bonus of $10 000 (or was it $15 000?) because he's a WA bred horse with a win to his name. So he's paid pretty much all of the costs associated with actually getting him and probably his lifetime of training as well. He owes us nothing, everything from here on in is just icing on the cake.

I fully expected the next email from our syndicate manager to say that Ginger was ready for a spell. But I was surprised to find that it said he would be nominated for his third race in as many weeks! Naturally, we were all pretty concerned that the horse is being over raced but Brent Larsson has been monitoring Ginger closely for any signs of soreness and apparently he's fighting fit and really relishing his racing. He's been doing little work during the week and just keeping fit by racing. Brent also said that he is incredibly mature for a two year old and that he feels that as a result he might not have as much improvement in him as other two year olds. So the idea is to keep him running until he shows any sign that he's had enough.
The Winning Edge Presentations Trophy is the race, our boy has drawn barrier seven in a field of eight and Richard Rhodes is taking over from Clint Harvey. Why? I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the weight advantage to be gained from Richard's two kilo claim was just a little too tempting. 1200m will suit him, but this field is quite strong. Western Tide and Valentine Miss are ones to watch.

Could be on to something there Dom. Are you going to the Railway Stakes? So many top quality horses, so hard to choose just one!
Oh the things I'll do to avoid studying! I thought I'd do up a quick form guide for some of you out there who want a bit of help.
Beat The Storm is a perennial favourite of mine and I'm willing to forgive him for his last run in which he was unplaced. Would've won the Northerly Stakes if not for the crap ride and was very unlucky in the Birthday Stakes when West River Charley was laying into him over the final stages to relegate him to second. Carrying the top weight but with only a 2kg difference between top and bottom weight it might not be such a great disadvantage.
Idyllic Prince has big question marks over his ability to get the distance. He's only run the mile once before, which was in last year's Railway, where he ran 13th. Once over 1650m he ran second but that was a lot easier than this. Was impressive in winning the Prince of Wales, but that was only 1200m. Fourth in the Lee Steere but like many others, he appeared to have every chance. Good horse, but I can't see him winning this.
Mansion House ran a superb race in the Lee Steere and I actually thought he won, even after watching the replay. Instead he was done on the bob of the head by Grasspatch Girl. Drops back 3.5kg from that run. Will be on the speed and the only thing against him is his wide draw. Watch the first few races of the day, if the leaders are winning then Mansion House will be the one to beat. Otherwise, he's still right up there among the top hopes, particularly if nothing else wants to lead.
Guyno is top shelf but looking for more ground. Take him in the Kingston Town in a few weeks, but not in the Railway.
No Questions was good in the Lee Steere, running third. Also he ran fifth in the Prince of Wales. I don't think I'd pick it, but it's probably a good long shot at $31.
New Spice has an awkward draw but good form. Couldn't have been more impressive in winning the Northerly Stakes when it flew home to score and was the losing favourite in the Lee Steere when it was blocked and inconvenienced, finishing sixth. With a little luck in running, New Spice could make this look easy but it's definitely tough from gate 19 (should actually be 15 when the emergencies are scratched).
West River Charley is difficult to predict. Appeared to have every chance in the Lee Steere but only ran fifth. A good third in the Northerly and winning the Birthday proved he's got the talent, but there's just something inside me saying no thanks. Drawn well but I just can't see it winning.
Mr Sandgroper, Royal Lott, Keyton Grace, Hartley's Dream, Innovation, Tarzi and Daka's Gem are not good enough to win. Probably place hopes at best.
El Presidente is obviously all the rage and has drawn very well in 4, but I'm not sure that he's a Group One horse. His preparation has been in easier company for the most part so I'm willing to risk him. Additionally, he's a last to first type horse. In a big field like this, he may have to change tactics and this will unsettle him.
Glory Hunter is one of only two horses ever to beat El Presidente. Been right behind him in a few races this time in but since he's come through easier races, many with El Presidente, I don't think he's proven he has what it takes to win a Group One.
So in conclusion, I think I'll go for Beat The Storm, from Mansion House and New Spice, unless the track favours the leaders, in which case I'll probably swap the order of the first two. But I think it's an open race and I'm incredibly likely to be wrong. I'm exhausted. Good luck to all!

Exotic Nights never looked like losing and I was surprised to see Mansion House settle handy rather than lead. Still ran a good race but El Presidente made my form guide look silly. He also made 15 horses look slow. Beat The Storm got my money in the end and was brave but just not quite good enough on the day. My God Hartley's Dream smashed home! Another 20m and he would've had it. Best trial for the Kingston Town.
Rich And Wild is now headed out to the paddock despite what I said earlier this week. The connections have decided he's done enough for now and he'll have a well earned break. Not particularly happy with how he was ridden today, he settled too far back and then tried to get a run through the field instead of going to the outside. Still got home for fourth and tried his hardest, so definitely not disappointed in the horse.

I'd just like to add I am totally in awe of Takeover Target. Walked into the local TAB just in time for the race and had shivers up my spine as he reeled in 3 or 4 lengths on Dance Hero in the straight. And he did it carrying 61kg, just awesome.

That CRIS website is absolutely brilliant. Add it to your favourites, you'll love it.
Megatic has a weight advantage of 6.5-7kg on 9 of the other runners. That's huge! I honestly think Megatic was better suited to the Railway over the shorter distance. 1800m is probably not going to be his best distance, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. I like him, but probably not enough to back him outright. It's also going to be hard from barrier 10. If Megatic goes well, Perestroika won't be far behind I reckon.
El Presidente will be very hard to beat. I was sceptical about this horse before seeing him do it so easily in the Railway. Make no mistake, he's straight from the top shelf. Again, the only query is the distance. He hit the line quite well in the Railway so I reckon he'll probably get the distance OK.
New Spice and Guyno can't be written off, but I still think Guyno will run better over more ground than this.
Hartley's Dream is the big question mark. I don't think he will win, but if he pulls another run out of the bag like in the Railway, he'll be in the finish. I'm willing to bet that the Railway run was a bit of a fluke.
Glory Hunter drew 14 and the Kingston Town will be his 4th run in 22 days. A very fine horse, but again is more of a sprinter and there's a bit too much against him this time. Impossible to rule him out though.
Mansion House will be there at the finish. Drawn 13 but will almost certainly go to the front from there. He could hang on without surprising.
Hmmm, after all that I can't go past El Presidente. But there will be no chance of getting a price for him so I think I'll just be going for the multis. Perhaps 5-6-7-9-13 boxed in a $10 flexi quartet will be the go for me. There's bound to be a longshot that sneaks a place to knock it over though :(
