Being a Qlder and never having been to Adelaide, what are the primary differences - better and worse - for each ??? I would have guessed that AAMI was custom-built for footy .... not so ?

I saw this discussion start elsewhere, but thought it would be better in its own thread.

Adelaide Oval is very long and narrow, shaped like a racetrack, and has a capacity of ~30,000 vs ~55,000 for AAMI. AO will have its capacity increased in the next decade, and has plenty of standing room - the record capacity is >60,000 I think. Being in the city parklands, it's much easier to get to than West Lakes, which is only served by buses and can be a nightmare with traffic and parking. AO is lightly used for football, and SACA doesn't always see eye to eye with SANFL, which owns AAMI and the two AFL licences. Could potentially be used for a home fixture for a Vic team, but that would be like SACA declaring war on SANFL. Much nicer all-round than the suburban concrete monstrosity that is AAMI.

Adelaide Oval record capacity: 62,543 in the 1965 Grand Final. They had temporary stands erected to accommodate the larger crowds.

Excellent comparison between the two sporting venues. I grew up watching GFs at Adelaide Oval, and although I saw the Redlegs win 5 flags at AAMI, I never warmed to the place, and never venture there unless absolutely necessary. "Concrete monstrosity" is a very apt description. I recall World Series Cricket played there in 1977, and it was a horrible place to view cricket.

To answer the question, yes AAMI was custom built for football, based on the Waverley model in Victoria. AAMI stadium is okay, but a shocking place to be when it's cold and wet.

I have been fortunate to do some work for the SACA in the match office at Adelaide Oval on game day, and looking out over Adelaide Oval, it had to be the most scenic office in the world :) Can't wait for SANFL GFs to resume there in 2009.

Adelaide Oval. No better place in the world to watch sport from. :thumbsu: Alwys is a great place to relax and lie down in the sun, listening to some music, watching live sport, with a few drinks. :thumbsu: Not to mention, there is always a bit of eye candy there for us blokes.

Footy Park needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt close to the city, in the railyards area would be a good spot
it would be easier to get to, and there would be more to do when the game has finished, ie pubs/restaurants

I think the SANFL Grand Final should be moved back to the Adelaide Oval ASAP. How many games does the SANFL play at Football Park-only one, and that was the grand final. Can you imagine the AFL using the MCG for just one game (ie grand final) for the year? Leave Football Park to the Crows & the Power and shift all SANFL games (including finals, grand finals, state games) to the Adelaide Oval.
