Hi guys,

We've been out of the finals for a week and the Basia Bonkowski Music thread is experiencing high numbers... so I though, damn it, the cinemaphiles here deserve a thread too.

In the honour of Buckaroo Banzai and Robocop star, the great Peter Weller, I wanted to shoot the breeze with you guys about anything to do with film.

Things will get heated in here... keep it clean but critique to your hearts content.

And thanks to Lidge, or apologies to Lidge, for ripping off your great thread name:D

Honourable mentions to the works of Christopher Guest and Wes Anderson (How I wanted to squeeze The Life Aquatic in here), Labyrinth, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Evil Dead trilogy, The Die Hard trilogy (yes, the first 3), The Prestige, The Usual Suspects, American Beauty etc etc

Pretty good list Dean. Although Ferris Bueller? Come on, even Weird Science was better if you must select something from the John Hughes oeuvre. At least it had the saving grace of amusing cameos from the magnificently awful Vernon (Mad Max) Wells and Michael (Hills Have Eyes) Berryman.

Its funny, gokangas, that if I put down the movies I watch many times as opposed to my favourites, it would be a different list.

I have seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Labyrinth almost 100 times each. If I'm channel surfing and either Grease or Notting Hill are on, I don't change the channel (and I know how sad that is:rolleyes:).

Colours rocks, great chemistry between Duvall and the evergreen Penn. Only prob with these lists is its hard to be definitive, forget some movies over the years until the memory is jogged.

And as far as so bad, they're good, gotta chuck in Troll 2 - the benchmark of D-grade cinema.

Yeah, gotta say I don't get the love for Ferris either. Can't stand Matthew Broderick and he is a perfect match for "foot for a face" Sarah Jessica Parker.

Havn't seen King Rat, have to keep an eye out for it. Life is beautiful was very moving, quite an amzing film.

Just remembered another War movie that i love, that being The Pianist. That movie still blows me away after watching it many times. For me Brodie's acting in that is one of my all time favourites.

Last but not least, my other Kubrick favourite, Full Metal jacket. Even after all these years, there are parts of it i still am not sure how to take. Kickarse movie. When my wife craps on to her friends on how hot she finds Vince D'Onofrio (and his Inspector Goran Law & order character is), i like to remind her of his Private Pyle and 'Charlene' persona. :D

I think most people probably see the gun-ho side of Full Metal Jacket, but there is so much more to it. I like its brutal warts and all take, its full on. Asks more questions than it answers for me, arare movie that still makes me think long after watching.

Kind of a strange film, Full Metal Jacket, and one of two distinct parts.

The good part and the yawn part?

Here's 10 of the finest (not in any order).

Probably easier to list 10 films into each genre (comedy, horror, musical, thriller, doco, film noir, animation, drama, sci fi etc etc)

Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks' finest work)
The Shawshank Redemption
The Wizard of Oz
Pulp Fiction
It's a Wonderful Life
To Kill a Mockingbird
Snatch
The Sting
Gandhi
The Great Escape

Lidge's Top 10 - Comedies/Funniest Movies

1. Blazing Saddles
2. Flying High
3. Naked Gun
4. Fargo
5. Animal House
6. Top Secret
7. The Jerk
8. There's Something About Mary
9. Monty Pythons The Life of Brian
10. Borat

Apologies to Caddyshack, Happy Gilmore and Cheech & Chong (who I thought were geniuses growing up, or perhaps I was just as stoned as they were):)

Movie quotes almost deserve their own thread.

But I find it hard to go past this one from The Castle.....

Darryl: "Dale dug a hole. Tell 'em, Dale."
Dale: "I dug a hole."

Mum: "Good on ya Dale!"

Did you know he actually filmed the first couple of weeks in the lead role of "Back To The Future"?

And the last two - Miller's Crossing and Fargo - are superb. Really liked Blood Simple, too. The Coen Brothers are excellent film-makers.

Was "Fargo" the one set in Minnesota where everyone says "Yar" or some such ****ing annoying crap?

The Coen brothers make me feel dumb. I spend half the movie thinking how much I hate them but I feel like I have to like them because everyone whose opinion I value tells me they are geniuses.

Having said that I quite enjoyed Barton Fink.

On the Waterfront
Gone with the Wind (but only on the big screen, sucks on tv)
Psycho
Indiana Jones (the first one. and the second one. not the third one)
In the name of the father

I've tried to think of something made in the last decade but they all merge into one, big, botoxed, surround sound, extravaganza.

Just remembered some more:

Flying High
Top Secret
Baseketball
^^^ all Zuckers I believe.
The Last Samurai
Lethal Weapon

And another one for the "less proud of..." list

Try harder, Kangalicious.:D

Even last year brought us The Departed, Last King Of Scotland, The Queen, Little Children, Notes On A Scandal, Blood Diamond... all were fantastic and to be honest, any could have taken best picture.

Actually, one of the real gems last year was a movie called 'Crank' starring Jason Statham. A real dumb, high octane action film that on first viewing is totally ridiculous but it stands as one of the most original actioners I have seen. Give it a view, there are things in this you have never seen.

OK, confession time. I have small children. Therefore, I probably see one movie a year on the big screen which isn't animated. Everything else I see on a DVD. Last year I flew to London (same flight as the Geelong football team's end of season trip but that's another story) and watched 7 movies there and 8 movies back, to catch up on 2 years worth. It's just that when I do go out, I prefer to make merry than watch movies.

So, the one non-animated film I saw this year: the Queen - very good, and my don't they have squeaky doors at Balmoral? Last year: Kenny, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I tried to pick the 5 films I'd watch whenever they come on. I could have added The Sound of Music, Grease, Bridget Jones (I have a massive crush on Colin whatshisname), Blade Runner, and the Life of Brian, but I worry that none of you will take me seriously ever again (if you do now).

Oh - and pharro - TOD is right about Ferris Bueller. And you are wrong. But that's OK, even you have to be wrong sometimes. :)

There tends to be some common threads regarding movies. Much less eclectic than the our favorites bands, when TOD can reel off shit that I have never, ever heard of. In fact, I'm yet to be convinced that he hasn't made some of it up to amuse himself. "Indie-rock act The Leighbrownfanatics. They're fantastic. I saw them at the Soft Bar in 1994 and they were great".

Anyway...

Any movie about politics, war, the mafia and I'm there. Anything about whingeing morons who fall out of love, find it, lose it again and then hug at the end of the film can get stuffed. STFU, get drunk, take some drugs and get the **** over yourself. No-one cares. And kids movies blow, BTW.

Incredibles has the greatest production design of any movie. Some relationship movies can be OK as long as they spare the treacle = e.g. Closer

Cars is ordinary. Toy Story is ok and I will happily remove The Incredibles from my sophisticated and well researched opinion.

But really, any movie you are forced to watch as a parent that doesn't completely suck is always going to be looked upon more favourably than it perhaps should.

3. Re-Animator
4. Fight Club
5. Brain Dead
6. Dell'Amorte Dell'More (Cemetery Man)

Agreed.

Some lines they gave Julia Roberts in that film, were words I would have never expected to hear come out of her mouth. Ever.

Good stuff.

And Clive Owen is a pretty cool unit. Didn't mind that film at all.
