Alright, I know that Chad can play pretty much anywhere on the ground. I'd like to ask my felow port fans a question though.
Forgetting team structure, ie the other players we have, do you think Chad plays better as a CHB (as per 03/04) or as a midfielder in the centre (you know around packs, handballing through the corridor, going down the wings etc) ?
Personally, I think Chad's abilities allow him to play CHB as his best position on the ground, but we obviously have chaplin as an up and comer in that position, so playing chad permanently in our backline doesn't hold well for team structure, also given how tall we are back there too.

Prefer him in the midfield but wouldn't slit my wrists if he went back to CHB. We seem to be covered pretty well for tall defenders but I believe you play your best players in the midfield. He can turn games in there.

I doubt Chad will be settled back to CHB again in his career.
I have no real concerns or regrets with him playing the Adam Goodes style role of "everywhere" man/multi-tasking ruckrover.
If we are going to consolidate a side that can really challenge for the flag from 2009 onwards, we need to set our defence up properly.
Chaplin, Carlile and Grew are a good start. Move Lower into there as early as possible next year, especially if Wilbur's start to the year is delayed. Keep Surj playing the role he had this year. I like the plan of having a sweeper like P. Burgoyne back there, but clearly that style of player would need to be better defensively, the way that JB and Gav were when played in defence.
I like Chad at CHB, but as mentioned, Chaplin is coming up there... Chad playing the loose man is another option, but Brogan does that... But Chad does it much better, Brogan's marking has been disappointing lately imo. His game has dropped off from 04, and he always seems to get injured now too. His ruck work remains good, but around the ground he really has dropped off.
Should play centre half-forward, IMO. Who else can you trust to kick long to in a one-on-one sitch? Would slug it out with JB for All Australian.
I'd do that. Give the midfield keys to Salopek, Thomo and Boak... similar down back with Chappy, Peter Pettigrew and Fiji Bob. Premiers '08 LOL.

Given that we haven't seen Chad played as a permanent forward since 2003, when he was 23-24, it would be bloody interesting to see what sort a fist he would make of playing as a key forward again.
I always thought he underscored for a marking forward.
If our midfield group could improve significantly with the development of Boak and Thomson, plus any recruiting over the offseason, the move of Chad to CHF could be a beauty.
Tredrea at FF. Westhoff in a FP. Chad at CHF. Hmmm......looks good on paper. Would he be disciplined enough to play to position? More importantly, would Choco be disciplined enough to keep him there?
He marked and converted nicely once yesterday. Seriously, if we're going to win one half of the battle, might as be the one that sees us get the ball.
Yes i certainly wanted him to start at CHF yesterday, and half expected it to happen. I think with more midfield (and defensive) options being developed, CHF is his best position (with occasional runs on the ball).

As long as it doesn't prevent us from recruiting aggressively for a very good long-term option there.
I guess curbing his longevity may be a problem, but I'd take 2-or-3 AA CHF calibre seasons over another 5 racking up possies wif da broze.
So, while we're on it... my early entry:
FF Gray Tredrea Westhoff
HF Ebert Cornes Motlop
CC Kornes Salopek Cassisi
HB Senior Chaplin Wilson/Lower
FB Surjan Carlile Thurstans
1R Lade Junior Boak
Int Brogan Thomson Pearce Pettigrew
Emos Krakouer Thomas Giles

For sure. I think Chad is our best option at CHF until we can develop one of our new draftees (or the unlikely event that Willits develops into an AFL standard CHF).

Obviously very early days, but I'd like us to line up like this round 1 next year.

C Boak, K Cornes Salopek
HB P Burgoyne, Chaplin, Surjan
FB Pettigrew, Thurstans, Lower

Here is a thought...
If you were an opposition coach, where would you prefer Chad Cornes?
Would you prefer to have him floating around in your foward line? or would you prefer to have to find a tagger to go with him all around the ground?
Personally, I say we clone him and Gav and have one on every line :D

^no room for rodan?
he's only 23 and amongst our strongest and toughest midfielders...
edit: chad at chf must be at least experimented with next year. his NUMBER ONE strength is his contested marking. i just think wish we could see it employed more that's all...
Ah, yes. Always forget someone. Probably one out Thomson and Rodan in the team.
