BIG G PIEMAN

just wondering....
Derek Hine seems to be a surpeme talent spotter. since taking over the reigns from Noel judkins, has really re-built our list to a point where we probably have the list with the most upside and potential in the league IMO.
Can anyone tell me his background? Did he play AFL/VFL? Who did he work for before the Pies?
I think he worked for Hawthorn but not as the recruiting manager, but I'm not sure.
Edit: Googled Hine and found out he was senior coach of Prahran in 2002 (says he 'returned' to this role). In 2003 he was appointed to Collingwood as a' Player Development Officer'. I must be thinking of another staff member we got from Hawthorn. I think it was Hook as list manager (did we even get him, was he any good?).
It looks like after Judkins quit (at least as National Recruiting Manager) pretty suddenly he was handed the reigns and has handled them well.

I think we got Simon (or was it Brad) Lloyd from Hawthorn, not sure if he is even still with us.

You have Simon Lloyd as your High Performance Manager. He used to be the psychologist at Hawthorn.

I'm 99.9% certain Hook is no longer with us. Nor was the army dude we employed.
Hine was as you said coach of Prahran, then moved onto that Player Development role. Dunno if this was supposed to be anything resembling what Richo and Scott currently does.
From reports, he showed lots of interest in recruiting in his time with us and due to Noel Judkins' documented illness, Hine sort of took the reigns. He took great interest in how other pro-sports looked at recruiting, and findings from this have flowed into his strategy.

Yeah, but we also poached John Hook from the Dawks in 2005, but I'm not sure he survived the 2005 restructure.
I think he invented baked beans?

Crawford was his name and after being heavily involved in the great review of 2005 and getting a job to improve accountability he was one of the ones held accountable in the great review of 2006. I have NFI what Hook did or does.

I used to work with his wife at the State Bank over 20 years ago.
At the time he was playing with Prahan in the VFA, and had done for a few years. Prior to that is think he was an under 19 footballer at Richmond, but never played senior footy in the VFL as it was then.
I was only a young bloke at the time, and remember his a being a top bloke - last ran into him about 4 or 5 years after I left the bank and he remembered me and said g'day.

Yep, now I remember. Thanks

Is he good or did they finally get the development program working and he is feeding in top 5 draft picks? Lets see what they find at 14 this year, although Dyas may be a gem by the look.
