View Full Version : Hawthorn's theme song?
Hey guys..
I was just sitting on the couch twiddling my thumbs thinking about space ships and flying cows, when one of the cows began singing the Hawks theme song..
Long story short, this cow had liver and digestive problems, and invariably was bound for surgery.. no wait that's not the story.. :o
I just wanted to know what every1 thought of our theme song? :p :thumbsu:

Actually, speaking of which, I have been wondering whether anyone know what the song was in the 50s, prior to the adoption of the "Hawks" nickname. Anyone know?

Righto, This might take a little time but I am up to the task.
Our first ever club song was born on the end of season trip to the Gippsland Lakes after our inaugral VFL season in 1925. Goes to the tune of Paddy McGinty's Goat which I am sure is a Silverchair number. Here are some of the verses;
"The day we beat North Melbourne.
Now wasn't that a scream?
We were a very happy, boozed little team,
We went to Bill Kennon's to pass away the time,
And we ended up happy all night by drinking all his wine.
Now Bill Kennon is our president - a really good sort is he;
We did not get to bed till nearly half-past three,
But who was the man there, and I think I am nearly right,
Who tried to chalk his billiard cue with the electric light?"
Now this wasn't an official team song and only lasted a couple of months but it just confirms that footy trips, piss ups and pouring scorn on North Melbourne are a part of our history and that should be always honoured at every opportunity.
More coming as I unearth the facts!

Yankee Doodle Dandy? Yeah, it's great: really epitomises what we're about! Sigh. But what can you do about it?!

lol thats the one!
The song's origins were in a pre-Revolutionary War song originally sung by British military officers to mock the disheveled, disorganized colonial "Yankees" with whom they served in the French and Indian War. At the time, the most common meaning of the word doodle was that of "simpleton" or "fool". It is believed that the tune comes from the nursery rhyme Lucy Locket.
ok so scratch that. The tune came originally from Lucy Locket:
Lucy Locket lost her pocket,
Kitty Fisher found it;
Not a penny was there in it,
Only ribbon around it.
oh dear........................

Chorus
I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy,
A Yankee Doodle, do or die;
A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam's,
Born on the Fourth of July.
I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart,
She's my Yankee Doodle joy.
Yankee Doodle came to London, just to ride the ponies;
I am the Yankee Doodle Boy.
i think this is what its from. try singing the song in tune to the hawks. scary

I just wish they would change the words from "Happy Team" To Mighty Team.

I would like to see our theme song take an adaptation from the Baywatch theme...
The players could run out in slow motion...
