View Full Version : Our First 2008 draft pick

It's a late pick at the moment because of our ladder position but what do you think that we need to get using our first pick?
keeping in mind Donohue is our final pick and i think somewhere in there we need to get Scott Thompson.
Im thinking a key backman personally because id like to see us trade/delist Spencer

We may end up with a few extra picks after trade week has finished, but a young KP backman is a must i would think.

We will only want to draft three players in the national draft, maybe four. If we get involved in trade week and shift some players, it will be for higher draft picks, not more picks.
Or a ruckman.... We might need one.
Trent West might go from ruckman mumber 4 to 2 in less than a week.

I think that we will only lose one of King or Blake. If Blake leaves King will stay in which case we would need to draft best available Ruckman.
If Blake stays,King would leave and we then should draft best available Key Position Backman.
My reasoning is that King has at best 2-3 years left, barring injury by which time Ottens will also be at the end of his career.Backup for West will need to be ready by then. That will take 3-4 years.
If Blake stays we can experiment a little bit more and draft a ruckman with a later pick or wait for Rookie draft.
We could then concentrate on our 1st pick on a KPBackman who in 2-3 years will be able to take over from Harley and Scarlett.
We need a tall backman who can play as a KPP and develop him for the next few years. Scarlett is more damaging as a loose rather than getting the best forward. Harley is second choice behind Egan as CHB and isn't as good as he used to be although he's still very handy. All our defenders would not be ideal in the FB position and Milburn wont be around in a few more years so by the time he retires, the young kids should be coming through.

Id like to hear from fellow Geelong peoples who they would delist/trade, elevate from rookie list and why?
Basically a list for 2008's Premiership :D
Ok here's my perfect scenario.
Trade King to Colling wood, get #14
Trade Callan to Dogs get #38
So here's how we draft:
#14- Tom Collier. A bit like C.Cornes. 192cm, 86kg. Key position defender/midfielder. Good replacement for Harley when he retires. #17- Pat Veszpremi. A bit like L.Hodge (not as classy)/S.Hurn (faster.) Very versatile. Big kick, aggresive, fast, clever. Was injured this year so he dropped down the order. Would be good pick-up.
#34- Dawson Simpson. 207cm, mobile ruckman wih decent skills. Project player. Can't go wrong this pick. Good ruck depth and time to develop. Has the tools.
#38- Scott Thompson. You know the rest.
#50- Adam Donohue.
-Elevate Grima, Davenport, Lonergan
Out:
King
Callan
Gardiner
Playfair
Owen
S.Hunt
Spencer
Hogan
Its a massive change for a club that won a permiership but i be rapt if it happened!

Leave Davenport on the rookie list and maintain Hogan. Kepp King on the list because we could benefit from the Blake trade with St. Kilda and Richmond keen on him. Apparently they have offered Blake deals which he approves on but both have offered Geelong 2nd round picks for Blakey and are bargining process could see Geelong claim an upgrade on out first round pick or even get another first round pick.
For a bloke no one rated and some still don't, a second or first round pick would be gold for the Caters!
would be better to get a first for king though than a first for blake imo because i rate balek higher than king. But nominated rooking davenports a good idea

How about Scott Selwood with pick 17?? I'd like to see that.
If Blake or King goes (which I doubt they will) then pick 17 will be used for the best ruckman left.

If,if,if Blake was to end up with St Kilda for their first draft pick we could use that to get Troy Selwood from Brisbane as he is apparently in dispute with them.;)

Kane Tenace (javascript:__LoadProfile16960(15001);)
In my opinion; the ones with a question mark I would query over delisting; DJohnson just fell away badly in the year.
SHunt was a really good mobile tall in the VFL in 2007; lead from the front.
SHogan showed enough to stay on the list, but might be cut with the new draftees coming through
SOwen, same as SHogan copped a knee injury, maybe rookie list him.
The ones in red are definates to get canned, due to either not making enough progress (Spencer) or just cause I think they suck (S Byrnes).
Lonergan/ Grima I would toss up about being elevated to the seniors; I would only elevate 1, as they both play key utility pos.
JDavenport is a 100% definate to get up (imo) to the seniors, he is a class above the VFL majority.
I would give Tenace another crack at it; had an interrupted year in 07; probably next year make or break
Just my opinion

I think we cant get rid of Hogan as it is his second year and why get rid of a young developing player.

I do agree with you, its just that we have at least 3 candidates possibly coming up for elevation from the rookie list; I like the games that ive seen Hogan play, similar game to Dasher, man on man, hassles all the time back flanker. But I only suggested him as I thought that as the majority of the other 1-2 year players have jumped on leaps and bounds.
I just think it comes down to who to push out when the new draftees come through???
My guess at what the club will do:
Senior List Delist/Trades:
1) Callan - Bulldogs
2) Spencer
3) Playfair
4) Gardiner
5) S.Hunt
6) Owen
Rookie List (delistings)
1) Reynolds
2) Grima
Elevate:
1) Lonergan
2) Davenport
Pick Up:
17 - David Gourdis
34 - James Polkinghorne
50 - Scott Thompson
66 - Adam Donohue
Rookie:
1) Joel Smouha
2) Joey Daye
3) Patrick Dangerfeild
4) Stephen Owen (rerookie)
5) Keep Liam Bedford

Given that the club is rolling in money after the grand final win, couldn't we elevate Grima and make Davenport a nominated rookie? Seems the best of both worlds.

Depends on what we do with Gardiner & H. If they are both traded/delisted then Grima should be elevated. Would help us out with salary cap room as well as giving us an additional KPP. I would suggest that Davenport would become the nominated rookie and Owen may be given the Lonergan treatment (delisted, then rookied). Otherwise we face a tough decision on Owen at the end of next season when he may've only played a handful of games. Pretty sure that Lonners has been given the nod as far as being upgraded to the senior list.

They will make as little change as possible to the list. I think they have said they want four draft picks and they will get that through the Callan trade. I think we should delist Playfair, Spencer and Sam Hunt pick up Thompson in the draft as well as another KPP upgrade Grima and Lonners, Davenport still has another rookie year no need to promote him just yet as he is not in our best 22. King will stay i would think club says they want him and he wants to stay.

Why are people saying delist Grima??? young KPP second in the VFL goalkicking and he probably would played in the 1s this year ahead of nablett and hawkins if he wasn't a rookie. He has a massive engine and will cost us nothing to pick up. Better then the wild stab in the dark at a 2nd of 3rd round KPP out of the draft i would think

If they up grade Grima and Lonners they would then have to de-list 5 players!!
The 5 most likely IMO are Spencer,Gardiner,Playfair,S.Hunt and either Owen (draft back as a Rookie) or D.Johnson who did himself no favours last week.
We are now in a position where we don't have to draft the best availible. But we can draft to our needs.
First two picks get 2 key defenders
third pick get a ruckman
fourth pick is Donohue
Thompson will be in the rookie draft. No club will take a risk on him in the national draft,

Add Callan into that. At best we're either getting a higher third round pick (presumably won't use the other?), at worst a forth rounder we won't use.

need to draft collier, veszpremi and simpson somehow
Collier (CHB/utility) and Simpson (giant ruckman) I can understand, but why do we need Veszpremi?
My opinion:
If we trade King, first pick should be used on McEvoy if still available, or Bellchambers if not.
If we don't trade King, first pick should be used on best available key defender. One of Rance, Pears, Myers, Collier or Gaertner (roughly in that order) should be available and would be a good choice.
Second pick could be used on more of a project player. There are a couple of tall, quick athletic freaks that could be anything, and we are one club that has the depth to spend a couple of years trying to develop them. I'm thinking Gaertner, Kangars or Otten.
Alternatively, could pick up a depth midfielder. Have heard that the club has talked to Aaron Joseph from Tassie, who sounds like the sort of player that would appeal to Stephen Wells and could be a good pickup at #34.
Third round likely to be Scott Thompson, if you listen to the majority of punters here. I likek the kid and think he would be a good pick up, although not sure we need to go this early. On the other hand, shallow draft and he is likely to be a better bet than any 17yo kid we pick up here. Happy to go with it.
Fourth round is Adam Donohue. We can't afford more than four picks, and he is locked in for our last.
Would promote Lonergan and Grima. Fairly sure we still only have one player - Dasher - who qualifies for veteran status next year, so we can still have a nominated rookie. Davenport is the obvious choice, and by using him this way he is still eligible for senior selection but it is one less we have to delist. If this is not the case we should elevate him too - definitely got to give him a go in the ones next year.
Speaking of delistings, assuming Callan is our only trade (for the Donohue pick), we need to lose five. I think they will be Playfair, Gardiner, Spencer, S Hunt and probably Owen. To be honest I would rather see Shannon Byrnes go than Owen, but I just don't think we will do that now he is a premiership player. Could re-rookie Owen potentially if the rules allow (not sure they do) and we rate him enough. Not fussed personally.
Obviously rookie list would be Davenport, Bedford, and two others. I would really like to see a project ruckman there. I saw someone mention Smouha, who might be a decent choice given his athelticism although I'm concerned he might be short (196cm). My ideal choice would be a very raw, athletic 200cm+ high-risk high-reward kid who will need 3-4 years in the VFL to come on. The other could be Owen, or it could be another fairly raw medium sized kid.
Collier (CHB/utility) and Simpson (giant ruckman) I can understand, but why do we need Veszpremi?
Coz Djerrkura is getting too easy to spell.

According to Cats Claw it was reported in the Tassie papers today that GFC has had discussions with a kid called Aaron Joseph.
Here's what I know so far:
178cm
75kg
Glenorchy Tas.
Draft camp results:
1st, Agility test (7.91s)
=4th, 20m sprint (2.91s)
Commentary:
"Tasmania’s best midfielder who performed well at the Champs. He is good at the clearances and has good hands. Gets the ball inside 50 from the middle fairly often. Works really hard all day. Isn’t quick but he can hit targets."
Sounds quite good to me. (Whoever wrote he wasn't quick might have been surprised at 2.91 in 20m sprint at the draft camp.)
Can anyone give any further info on him? Has anyone actually seen him play?
I think he is to old to rookie. correct me if i am wrong. I rate the bloke very highly i wouldnt care if geelong drafted him with our 2nd pick. He seems to have everything that we need. Great spoiler and seems to have an excellent kick dare i say better than Scarlett.
You can be any age to be a rookie, as long as you haven't spent time on any other teams AFL list.

Aaron Joseph
Recruiter 1: Joseph was another player who worked really hard, particularly around the stoppages. He was the main player in close for them.
Recruiter 2: I thought Joseph was the best player for Tasmania. I liked the way he put his head over the ball and set up the play. He worked pretty hard, although I'm not sure if he's going to be to tall enough to genuinely play through the midfield.

Thanks.
Not sure about this comment. Perhaps we might not want to play him and Shannon Byrnes in the same team, but I think that shouldn't be a problem (would get rid of Byrnes!).
If his listed height of 178cm is right then surely that is no problem. Check this list:
177cm or less:
Jason Akermanis
David Wirrpanda
Michael Braun
Shane Crawford
Brent Harvey
David Rodan
Peter Bell
Heath Black
Alwyn Davey
Aaron Davey
Jared Crouch
Nathan Foley
178cm
Daniel Kerr
Scott West
Tyson Edwards
Josh Carr
179cm
Chappy
Ben Cousins
Danyle Pearce
There's plenty of others I've missed but that should at least give you an idea.
And given he's only a kid he almost certainly has a couple of cms growth left in him - I would expect him to hit 180cm by the time he's 20.

As for Veszpremi, I don't think we will be able to get him before another club drafts him.

The more I hear about him, the more I like David Myers. All Australian U/18 this year, Barassi medallist last year, leader of the dominant WA backline at the champs. Good skills, very flexible with the ability to hold down a key defensive post or to go up on to a wing and run rampant. Excellent leadership abilities, a natural footballer.
Sounds like the sort of player Wellsy would like - an adaptable utility that can be used in a variety of roles as the situation demands it, along the lines of Milburn (who we will need to replace in the next couple of years) and Mackie.
May be gone by pick #17, but if not would be a very, very good pick up.
