View Full Version : Am I All That Different?

I love footy and cricket and tennis and golf and......
However, if someone offered me $1m to name three members of the Melbourne Victory or three members of the Melbourne Storm off the top, their money would be completely safe. They could offer $100m and it would still be safe.
I could be expelled to an island off the coast of Australian Territorial Waters for this admission but I could not name two members of the Socceroos, other than Viduka and Kewell (spelling?).
They could also offer me $millions to name all the teams in the National Soccer League (or whatever it's called) or the NRL and no matter how hard I tried to recall the names, I would have no hope.
I know nothing about basketball either. Except that Andrew Gaze has retired and Shane Heal is a playing coach for a new-ish team (I think).
I don't say this as a boast. I just have no interest and no inclination to force myself to be interested in some of these sports. I used to watch English soccer but lost interest in that years ago.
Am I the odd one out?

Nope. Guilty as charged.
Perfectly happy to watch all those sports, just not interested in cluttering up my mind with any of the pertinent detail.

You don't need to know them - that's what Google is there for.

Let me see...
Victory - Muscat, Archie Thompson, some bloke called Love
Storm - Billy Slater, Israel something or other, ummmmm... no.
But to be fair, I can't name another Australian tennis player beyond Lleyton Hewitt now that the Woodys, Phillippousos and Wayne Arthurs have all retired.

Victory - Archie Thompson, ummmmm, does Fred still play for them?
Storm - Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, Matt someone (Afro dude), Cooper Cronk, ummmmmm
Tennis - Alicia Molik, Sam Stosur, Hewitt, someone Reid, The Gooch, Peter Luchack (weird as name)
Don't really follow soccer though. I can name most players from each states cricket teams though

Billy Slater, Steve Turner, Greg Inglis, Israel Folau, Matt King, Cameron Smith, Matt Geyer, Jeff Lima, Mick Crocker, Dallas Johnson, Ryan Hoffman, Jeremy Smith, Garret Crossman, Brett White. There's 15. For an extra $1m I'll give you 4 players for the Storm bench.
Victory - a lot tougher. Kevin Muscat, Archie Thompson, Grant Brebner & Danny Allsop. Hit the wall at 4.
I could be expelled to an island off the coast of Australian Territorial Waters for this admission but I could not name two members of the Socceroos, other than Viduka and Kewell (spelling?).
Easier than A League - but can only name half a side. Cullina, Bresciano, Schwartzer, Cahill, Moore, Emerton, Neill
They could also offer me $millions to name all the teams in the National Soccer League (or whatever it's called) or the NRL and no matter how hard I tried to recall the names, I would have no hope.
Are there only 8 teams? Not 100% sure on the new Kiwi team. Perth Glory, Adelaide United, Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory, QLD Roar, Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets, Wellington Phoenix (?).

Blank. Hate rugby.

I wouldn't know anyone at Melbourne Storm but I'm from Adelaide, so don't really have a need to. Have no clue about rugby, I've heard of some names and could probably name a few Wallabies or high profile League players, but not many. I know Dan Carter from the All Blacks because he's good looking.
Could name probably half of Adelaide United and 3 quarters of the Socceroos, and could name all the A League teams, but have never actually watched an A League game. I watch the Premier League instead.

Apart from Mastermind, could probably have the claim to fame as having the most amount of useless information in my brain.
Could name most star XI's for each A-League side, EPL side, as well as knowing more than most about the Boomers, follow the Storm fairly closely and could reel off a fair bit about them also.
NFL have a brief amount of knowledge. Ditto the NBA, Baseball im useless apart from the obvious players.
One sport I know nothing about is the NHL.
Quite sad really.

I follow soccer and rugby league purely for the Storm and Victory.
Tennis has lost me over the last 5 years. Too many meaningless tournaments on Foxtel.
Don't like Union cause I can't handle a game that is won and lost through giving away penalties.
Was lucky enough to go to see the Lakers when in LA in Feb. Basketball has been butchered by administrators in Aus, so hard to get excited about the local brand.

Yes obviously the obvious ones such as........Babe Ruth (?), that guy who just broke some home run record (?), that Kevin Costner character from Field of Dreams, trying to remember some of the guys who featured in Seinfeld when George worked for the Yankees..... anyone else on the obvious side that I've overlooked?

I don't clutter up my brain with useless sports trivia - was it Einstein who couldn't remember phone numbers because he said he could always look them up? - but I remember the celebrity gossip. For example, I know Tiger Woods' wife used to be fellow golfer Jesper Parnevik's nanny. I don't know what is worse.

I don't profess to have a perfectly honed 'gaydar' (worst word ever), but I heard that too and was gobsmacked. I am a big fan and couldn't care less who he snuggles up to late at night, but I find it hard to believe. But maybe that's my antiquated view of what a gay man should look and act like.

Nothing wrong with that NorthBhoy. Trust me, living in Sydney, your eyes get opened to the gay world (and I stress, just the eyes:rolleyes:).
Thus, its not uncommon to find tattooed, loud, incredibly buff gay guys that could quite easily beat the living s*** out of you. You know, sing sweetly in your ear while snapping your neck like a chicken.

Lead singer of legendary indie band Husker Du, and then later, Sugar.
