Who'd you prefer?
I say Boyle by the length of Flemington x 100000000000000000000000000000.

Thornton is massively overrated. I saw him actually give up chasing his opponent multiple times against us this year. I seem to recall he was playing on Roughead who kicked a nice little bag on him. He looked Zac Dawson-esque!
Boyle, Boyle, a thousand times Boyle....

Thornton for me.
He would be an improvement on Gilham/Jacobs imo, however he wouldnt be a guarenteed FB that could handle the big bodies. That is my main concern.
However, if you are asking Boyle for Thornton.
Last year we offered 24,33 in a superdraft. If we give up Boyle, thats less than Renouf/Morton imo.
I'm surprised by the turn around in attitude since last year.

They might of had a look at him Mullholand - sure you'll look absolute pus in a defense that leaks like that one - but that might mean you are pus. He's certainly not big enough to take on much more than the 3rd tall forward. We've already got Gilham, DJ and Boyle himself to do that.

Yeah thats a fair point.
I just want to have a player that can genuinely play on the best key forwards. I am sick of repeating the days of having Smith/Graham etc... rotating through the key spots without having an answer for the big forwards.
This year we've established that Croad is reliable week in and week out, Brown can play tall given the right circumstances and opponents, but is not a full time key defender. Gilham/Jacobs can play on the 3rd tall but not the gun forwards.
So we're missing a key defender when Brown has to play on a Johnson/Ebert type.
I really dont want to see Gilham being carved up as he's not a FB, but is a decent enough 3rd backman.

Boyle.
Thornton is not what we need. We need a Rance or someone like that.
Why rush things lets make sure we have the best possible list, Thornton is a stop-gap at best and not a great full back.

I reckon Thornton... It's a pretty fair trade.
Boyle, easily. He showed a lot more than Thornton last year despite going 'off the boil' in the latter stages of the season (after returning from injury).
My only concern with Boyle is susceptibility to injury. This aside, despite his age, there is still a huge upside to his performances as he hasn't played much at all - almost akin to a rookie.
I have a feeling that with a solid pre-season behind him, he could be the surprise packet next year.

Boyle
Another pre season in the gym and Gilham, possibly even Dawson, would be as good a full back as Thornton, seeing as they're all 3rd talls..

I have been against throwing Boyle around in trade week, especially for draft picks because I don't think we need to add more developing players.
I was however interested in adding a defender to our list, and still think Thornton suits us for a few reasons; age, position, ability to improve in a new environment etc.
Its a little bit small minded to look at his year at Carlton and say he didn't do well. If Gilham had to carry the weight of Carlton's defense by himself this year I think his figures would have looked pretty bad too. The ball coming 100 times a game type of stuff gives defenders no chance against quality forwards. Its the midfields responsibility as much as the defenders, and I think Thornton would really shine considering our midfield and the support of Gilham, Croad, Brown down back, and even Jacobs is still around the list as well and suddenly we've got depth.
I hope we're interested, and he's still one target I'm happy at looking at realistically compared to some of the other nonesense going around in trade week.
He'd help us.

I wonder how Boyler is feeling right now. Last year he was prepared to be dropped and repaid the faith and played basically his first season and played really well for most of it before being injured.
There's a difference between maybe delisting because of injury but now he has proved himself and we are looking to offload him. How many times can we almost get rid of him before he becomes resentful.

Did brisbane trade Leppitcsh for a backman because they needed one ?
Lepper for Hay that would have been good for us !!
No they gave him a chance to be a damn fine backman, when the league was crying out for forwards like him.
I reckon Boyler has the smarts that Barker had and will get better and better. barker wasnt that imposing just got plenty of key goals through smart paly

That is an excellent point of view. My thoughts exactly. We sell them to the highest bidder, like cattle...I feel for Boyle..

good point pessimistic.
but i am worried about injuries he is like barker bad hammies. If gilham goes down with an injury or danny jacobs does as well we are stretched at the back. i dont think we have to do a straight swap but i wouldnt mind a backman like thorton with a little experience he is obviously rated at carlton and hawthorn really want him so he must be okay.
Put it this way tho if you knew chris judd was coming to your club would you want to leave. I don't think so!!!!!!!!

Pick 12 for Thornton?
Thank God you are not head for trading, Thornton has done nothing to prove he is worth a first round pick! Werent we only trying to trade him for a 2nd rounder last season?

I cant remember really, id be willing to give up pick 12 for a good defender. could be a swap if say, they dontuse 20 in the judd deal, pick 12 for thornton and pick 20

I just dont think the "T-Bird" is much chop to be honest, a carlton fan said he would be a great third tall but we already have an abundance of them with DJ, Gilly, Murphy and even Birch. I say we hold our first round pick and try up grade it if we can to get a defender like Rance.

Two second rounders - our own and the one we received from Sydney for Everitt.
