TRAVIS Johnstone stepped off a plane from Thailand last night to decide where he wants to play football next year. It is unlikely to be at Melbourne.

The Brisbane Lions and Sydney are among the clubs to have expressed keen interest in the classy midfielder, with the Lions believed to be the strongest candidate to acquire the Demons' former No. 1 draft pick.

Johnstone remains tied to Melbourne for 2008 on a substantial contract, which could be the main obstacle to a deal.

There was speculation last night that Johnstone, should he agree to move north, could be traded to Brisbane for pick 14, which the Lions would be likely to receive from Collingwood for ruckman Cameron Wood.

Perhaps mindful of improving its pace through the midfield, Melbourne joined Richmond in interest in the Bulldogs' Jordan McMahon. Port Adelaide similarly retains an attraction to the former South Australian, but it is believed McMahon is less excited about a return to Adelaide.

Richmond football director Greg Miller flew to Brisbane last night to talk to small forward Rhan Hooper about a shift to Punt Road.

Geelong coach Mark Thompson also called frustrated Brent Prismall yesterday to placate the midfielder, after the player had asked the club on Monday to trade him.

The 21-year-old is under contract for next year and would have required the club's co-operation to move, but equally, the Cats would not have wanted to retain a player who did not want to remain.

The Cats similarly convinced disgruntled ruckman Mark Blake to stay at Skilled Stadium. It is believed the club also decided to resist approaches for Kane Tenace.

Essendon continues to field significant interest from a range of clubs in quick midfielder Ricky Dyson. But it is still possible he could remain at Windy Hill.

pick 14??
i also like mcmahon, add some speed to the midfield.

I would be happy with pick 14 for Johnstone. I'd also be happy for us to chase Prismall but not sure exactly what he would be worth. Pick 14 or 21 or a combination of a pick and a player? Not so keen on McMahon.

I would rather hold on to TJ.
Teams have gone crazy with youth policies. TJ has a few good years left at 27 and is a star at his best. I would trade him for a higher pick, but Pick.14 is not that special.
Chances are we would end up with an average player while TJ could go off and win a Brownlow. Why trade a player that we know is good for a player (pick.14) that has a small chance of being good is 5 years time.

Recent no 14 picks
2000 West Coast Travis Gaspar HACK
2001 Kangaroos Daniel Harris GUN
2002 Kangaroos Ashley Watson HACK
2003 Melbourne Daniel Bell OK
2004 Adelaide Fergus Watts ??
2005 Essendon Angus Monfries OK
2006 Hawthorn Grant Birchall OK
2005 Adelaide James Sellar ??

OK, I would take Harris, he's a good player.
Bell, Monfries and Birchall are solid players, not the match winners that we all know Johnston can be.
Johnno has the best disposal of any demon player...... the forwards must love him having the ball. Lets hold on to him.

I'd rather play for Sydneys pick 11 but that would mean throwing in something else. Come on Brad Miller!

no deal!!! TJ only just turned 27 has still plenty of good footy ahead of him and the change of coach and this trade rumor mill might get him to extract the digit on a more regular basis.

Need to make some bumper stickers in the mould of FREE TIBET

"KEEP TJ" I'll be taking orders

That's an odd article. To open saying that it is unlikely that he will return to Melbourne is a big call, and if you ask me, a massive stab in the dark.

Agree, i reckon its almost a definite that we'll keep him. I reckon this is just a tactic by bailey, putting his name out there as he realises he needs a boot up the arse

Hi all. Heard on 3AW before that the Johnstone to Brisbane deal has almost been done - TJ to the Lions, Wood to Pies, R Shaw and pick 14 to Melbourne. Anyone confirm?

Johnstone + Miller to Brisbane for 8? Heck I'd throw in a 4th rounder too!

That 3 way trade doesn't sound too bad but I'd rather someone a bit younger than R.Shaw. Maybe we can snag Heath? :p

I don't mind Rhyce Shaw, but he is too "Collingwood" for me.

Still, if we got him and Pick 14 then I would be pretty happy.

McMahon I'm not so sure.... just an older version of Chris Johnson if you ask me. Agree with Klyntonius about Prismall. Also agree with Deenamite, Sydney's pick 11 would good for Miller and TJ. Also if Wood is worth pick 14 then in my mind Trav is worht Brisbanes pick 8 but I wouldn't mind straight swap for Adcock? BUT PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! NOT, i repeat NOT Rhyce Shaw. I know it wont be Shaw for Travis but if he is part of the deal and comes to Melbourne then they have lost the plot, deadset lost the plot.

I think Shaw is either going to Brisbane, or staying at Collingwood.
