Pace, skills, footy brain.
Harvs is capable of shaping him into a fair player.
A second round pick and a player should do it.
Exactly what is needed and could be an excellent acqusition.

Nonsense. Soft and inconsistent.
Who would the player be, Murphy?

if rumours of jude boltons availability are true id prefer him... can win clearances for us...
if they really wanna have a crack at winning the flag in the next 2 years then if they got bolton to win the hardball and johnstone to be a skilled, fast outside mid, suddenly our midfield looks a lot better... bell, haselby, car, bolton, johnstone, schammer, peake, crowley...
What Dom said^^^^
Soft as butter that Johnstone boy.
Jude B goes OK, but I doubt that we could do the deal with Sydney.

Johnstone is way better than Jude Bolton.

Yep , when he is "on" there are not many better.
Yep , when he is "on" there are not many better.
But he isn't "on" regularly enough.
We suffer enough from inconsistency as it is.
And I reckon that you and Kenny are under rating Bolton a bit..
It is Jude we are talking about, not Mark.;)
Either way I can't see a trade happening.
Goddamn.
Kepler and Johsntone? FFS, what are we? A way to help shit footballers get more money?

With Murphy and Campbell not holding permanent spots in the side, it defies logic that you would be looking at Bradley.
Johnstone is alright, a very skillful player and a good runner. If you have a running gameplan and guys feeding him the ball he'll do well. While being less skilled, Jude Bolton is much tougher and much more consistent though. Melbourne fans are talking straight swaps for pick 11 or 14. I think that's over the odds for TJ.

We have Des Headland for running game plans...and Des hit some good consistent form.
Melbourne need to rebuild, but there's absolutely no reason we should give an average squibbing midfielder a chance when we can pick up some good kids in the draft.
We need forward talls like a need hole in the head, and Kepler is cack...so double no!!!

Might be over the odds but they are remembering him as a former number 1 draft pick. He isnt a first round pick anymore though - more likely 2nd round pick or 3rd plus a player.
Maybe 3rd Round + Webster (who rarely gets a gig anyway) or Duffield who has had his chance and hasnt impressed at all.

Jude Bolton is possibly being cut lose because roos has conceeded the game is getting faster - need for more quick players hence the recruitment of mattner hard runner off half back. Bolton is an in and under player
I'm surprised he wants to off load Buchanan and schneider both quick?? but maybe not as hard running like mattner, Malceski or Kennelley??
As for Johnstone do we need an inconsistent outside running player? NO!!
If the Club has re-signed Dessie then they(harvey) obviously believe he can provide consistent run as along with Peake, Foster, Happy, Ibbotson, Byron, Barru, Johnno

I heard on the radio that Jude Bolton actually asked to be traded from Sydney.

Bolton would be a go imo, if we can get him cheap. Tough and reliable. We should definitely be looking at it.
Johnstone.... maybe ... if he's cheap. Johnstone probably better than most of our midfielders when on, but inconsistency may be amplified at Freo with him... though maybe harvey can turn it around who knows.
Both are worth looking at, nothing big for them though.

Yes let's add another slow midfielder.

So, I am seeing no's to inside midfielder Bolton and outside midfielder Johnstone.
What kind of midfielders are you after?

Pretty good question I would have thought.
What do we need? inside or outside types?
While it is desirable to have players that can do both, in reality most players are better at one or the other.
Batting or bowling all rounders if you like?

I dont see him as an entirely outside midfielder, he can break a tackle and I think he is the best player in the Comp, outside the Geelong team to look inside for an option.
Now that Belly looks to be playing on, extractors like Hase and Foster could be firing out Hands to Johnstone and Belly, two great kicks to a lead.
Love his pace. It's what we need.

It is widely considered that the midfield is Freo's weakest link, behind the forward line and defense respectively. If Freo are going to trade for established players, they are more than likely going to look at midfielders.
Bolton and Johnstone are both midfielders and are available. One is a hard nut who isn't all that quick and isn't exceptionally skillful, the other is a flashy and very talented runner. They are two very different centremen, and it appears that many don't want either, so I am curious as to whether it is a case of both not being good enough to get a run with Freo, or a desire for a player that is somewhere in between the two (e.g. a faster, more skillful Bolton etc.).

I think it's more to do with having faith in our own list.
Ibbo and Brock, Foster in particular.

Fair enough.
Pick 7 should be able to land something good.

Trent Cotchin will be at West Coast next year, he's conceded this much.
I think we'll snare David Meyers or Alex Rance.

I'd like to see us take one of the local lads.
I don't know anything about the respective talents of Cotchin when compared to Masten/Morton/Palmer etc. but from what I've read if we don't take one of those 3 at #3 (or #1 or whatever we may end up with), they won't be available at #13.

I don't think Bolton is that slow, maybe Johnstone, though I haven't seen him enough to rate his speed reliably. Either way, Bolton gets the ball rather well and can deliver it ok. He would definitely start in our midfield each week if he was here, so why not get him if it's for peanuts?

Are you suggesting we recruit Bolton or Johnstone, or are you just using them as examples? Considering the asking price and their age surely it would be crazy to pursue either?
List wise I think we need height and pace asap to add to our current group, and we need inside mids coming through to replace Bell/Hase/Josh.
