Could be a chance to come to Freo as an assistant ??
Apparently he has been told by Carlton that he would get an assistant's job if the Kangas don't come to the party.
A non-Melbourne based club has also shown interest.
I bet that's either us or the Slime.
Kangaroos better be careful !!

I disagree. I reckon Laidley ought to be careful. If he ends up as an assistant, presumably he would be on less $$ than the Roos job, even though they don't have a lot of cash to spare by all accounts. He then also ends up back in the pack.
On the other hand, if he signs up for two years and they are crapola seasons, he might find it difficult to get another senior coaching role. And that could well be on the cards.
Personally, I'd prefer our assistant coaches to be learning to be a senior coach, rather than biding their time and waiting for a better job to come along.

Laidley gets on ok with Harvey, and has had a heap of experience. If he was available I'd snap him up.

If the Kangaroos dont renew his contract then we should get him to the club. Think of this coaching panel:
Mark Harvey
Dean Wallis
Peter German
Dean Laidley
Chris Scott
Some of the hardest guys to play the game...

Why would he come back to WA for an assistant's job??? Seems kind of silly really. Even if he did leave the Roo's and wanted to be an assistant he'd more than likely stay in Melbourne and take the local option.

Wasn't harvey on more $$$ as an assistant than Laidley as a senior coach?

Probably. Harvey was on $300k a year, which made him the highest paid assistant in the land. Well worth it though, coz we got him after that two years. I don't know what he'll get as a seniour coach though ???
Laidley would probably get equal or more pay here than at the Gold Coast Kangaroos.

Oh well. He's going to re-sign :
"Laidley will go into the new season on a guaranteed $400,000, with incentives, a pay rise in the order of 20-25 per cent after lifting the Roos from 14th into the top four."
That means he was on $320k, which was only $20k more than harvey was on as an assistant. He was offered :
"He was offered a job as senior assistant to Brett Ratten at Carlton on Monday for $250,000-plus at a meeting with chief executive Greg Swann, football operations manager Steven Icke and Ratten."
