Korn are back. After 2 1/2 years of waiting, Korn has released by far their best album to date. Even tho i loved Issues, not many others did and Korn were accused of selling out. The album did come out only 11 months after the epic Follow The Leader. With Untouchables, theyve taken their time, theyve moved away from the public eye, and theyve created their best work to date.
Its a much more mature album. Gone is Jon Davis's bagpipes for the first time. Gone is Fieldys slapping bass, he actually plays the bass in this album. Gone is the emotional tortured ending that has blessed past albums. Gone are the 60-90 second filler tracks that helped fill out Issues. The songs have more substance. Jon has taken singing lessons and does actually sing in some songs. But still this album is heavy as f**k.
Theyve taken the dark almost gothic sound of Issues, added the chunkiness of the Self Titled and Life Is Peachy albums, joined with a first class production and have progressed the sound into something cleaner, heavier nad more mature than anything Korn has produced before. A lot of experimental pedal sounds start of the majority of the songs, along with some drum loops.
Here to Stay, Bottled Up Inside, Thoughtless, One More Time, Embrace, Beat It Upright, Im Hiding and Wake Up Hate are heavier and chunkier than any other songs theyve done before. Make Believe, Hollow Life, Hating and Alone I Break are moodier, more mystical and slower than anything theyve ever done before.
There are just as many deep mystical but still heavy songs on this album as their are out and out heavy classic Korn songs.
A rundown of the album:
1. Here To Stay - The album starts with the current single. Heaviest start to a Korn album yet and is a progression on the classic Korn sound. One of their best songs and most memorable choruses. Similar to: Got The Life/Make Me Bad
2. Make Believe - Very goth mystical type song. Very Manson-esque. Kooky keyboard sample, followed by verse, then heavy chorus. First signs of a more mature Korn. One of the best songs on the album and would go down a treat as a encore. Similar to: Counting/My Gift To You
3. Blame - Silmilar starting riff to Here To Stay, going into softer verse where Jon sings, back into heavy bridge/chorus. This will be a mosh classic. Similar to: Somebody Someone
4. Hollow Life - very very eerie start with ambient keyboard samples and drum loop leading into an opera like Jon singing. Leads into smooth ambient type heavy chorus. Very eerie song thruout. Probably their softest song theyve done. If this becomes a single it will be a no.1. Similar to: nothing theyve ever done before
5. Bottled Up Inside - Heavy distorted rolling riff, leading into heavy chorus, soft bridge and very sing along chorus. Heavier than anything done before, very moshable. Probable single.
Similar to: Counting/Blind
6. Thoughtless - keyboard and drum loop sample leading into the heaviest ever Korn riff - almost a slower Fear Factory type sound. Groovy sing-along chorus. Will become a crowd favourite. Jons scat singing makes a comeback briefly in this song. Similar to: Beg For Me/Predictable
7. Hating - another slow eerie keyboard start leading into David's drumming with soft verse into epic like chorus. Another that would be a perfect encore. Very emotional. My favourite track. Similar to: No Way/Mr Rogers
8. One More Time - Starts almost like one of their previous B-Sides called the 'Camel Song'. Groovy, rumbling distorted sound. Another epic sounding chorus. Similar to: Somebody Someone/Falling Away From Me
9. Alone I Break - start sounds like the song Jessies girl. Almost a longer version of Issues '4U'. Emotional sounding song. Electronic sounding thruout leading into acoustic sounding chorus.
10. Embrace - soft start leading into heavy distorted riff, growling guitars and vocals. Vocals turn hip hoppy for a while. Heavy chorus. Very moshable. Similar to: Lies
11. Beat It Upright - Starting riff and verse riff sounding similar to Ademas 'Everyone'. Sexual lyrics. Very yell along bridge and chorus. Heavier than anything done before. More scat singing for a lil bit. Will become a moshpit favourite...finishes in Blind style hip hop style drum n bass. Similar to: nothing really
12. Wake Up Hate - another eerie start which quickly turns into a fast heavy riff/chorus. Probably the worst song on the album.
13. Im Hiding - 'Lies' (off s/t) style starting riff into slow moody hip hop style drums and bass. Slow verse, heavy interlude, back into moody verse, into heavy heavy epic like chorus. Funky bass thruout. One of Korns very best songs. Similar to: Dirty
14. No Ones There - Start up and firs verse sounds similar to Taproots style. Another loud, moody but heavy epic type chorus. Not as good an ending as Kill You on Life is Peachy...but not far behind it. Slow but heavy. Similar to: Dirty/ No Way
The production (done by Michael Bienhorn) on this cd is first class (it outta be considering the album cost $4 million to make). Very thick, loud, heavy, groovy sounding album. The mixing (done by legendary Andy Wallace) is also first class.
With this album, Korn has raised the bar for Hard Rock. Theyve released what really is their finest cd by a mile. The likes of Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Machine Head et al will have to try very bloody hard to match this album. Really, the album name is very apt.
Well done Korn, youve proved the doubters wrong!
