Shaw might head to Brisbane
Stephen Rielly | October 11, 2007
COLLINGWOOD flanker Rhyce Shaw appears destined for Brisbane in a three-way deal related to the futures of Lion ruckman Cameron Wood and Melbourne midfielder Travis Johnstone.
What was a relatively straight-forward transaction on Tuesday, with Wood coming to Collingwood for pick 14 and the Lions trading the selection to Melbourne for Johnstone, got complicated yesterday.
Shaw, the son of former Magpies captain Ray Shaw and brother of defender Heath, became entangled in the deal.
The Lions at first wanted Ryan Lonie and pick 14, but when Lonie declined to move and the Lions asked for Shaw, Collingwood asked for an exchange of second-round picks (25 for 31). It is this request that is believed to be holding up the deal.
The Magpies entertained Wood yesterday and remain confident of bringing the 20-year-old to Victoria, in part because Johnstone, who flew to Brisbane yesterday, has agreed to join the Lions.
Brisbane now needs Collingwood's selection to consummate the Johnstone deal with Melbourne.
After missing out on ruckmen in the first two days of trading, St Kilda was pushing yesterday for two Sydney premiership players, Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster, to add run to its game.
Both are contracted to the Swans for two years but Sydney was talking to the Saints about them yesterday, although St Kilda's full offer was not known.
The Saints' second-round selection, pick 26, is understood to be on the table for Schneider, who is on holiday in Bali and yet to agree to a move.
Dempster, a 23-year-old athletic, running defender, is originally from rural Victoria.
"He has a contract with Sydney but I can confirm that another club has interest," Dempster's manager Michael Quinlan said yesterday.
Richmond's Jay Schulz is almost certain to trade his Tiger jumper for a teal, white and black one.
The Richmond forward flew to Adelaide yesterday to meet Port Adelaide and his manager, Liam Pickering, said he was arranging contractual terms.
Schulz, though, is unlikely to figure in what was a three-way scheme that was to take Port's Damon White to the Western Bulldogs and Jordan McMahon from Whitten Oval to Richmond.
The Dogs want pick 18 from the Tigers or pick 16 from Port for McMahon, not White, so that they can remain in the second round of the draft. They have to give over an unspecified second-round selection to Adelaide for ruckman Ben Hudson.
Carlton spoke with Hawthorn yesterday about defender Bret Thornton but asked for the Hawks' first-round selection, pick 12. Hawthorn has baulked at parting with its first-round selection. "We would be very happy to have him at the club but not for pick 12," Hawthorn's list manager, Chris Pelchen, said.
Oh... my... God! :D
