What a load of shit. (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=385410)

Here's a tip AFL, our list is currently being raided by fleets of Victorian clubs trying to get our players to jump ship in the PSD.

If you are serious about developing the game up here, how about you give us our recruiting zone back?

How about letting the real South-East Queensland team have a go at some of their local kids, instead of these imposters.

2 teams in QLD should have the same zone priority picks.

Yeah, give them the Gold Coast and country Qld, and give us the Bris Metropolitan region + Sunshine coast.

Hopefully it'll be the same concessions as our current one - three priority rookie slots for Qld boys.

(I freely admit I'm finding it hard keeping a straight face as I type that... as if it's going to be fair.)

I've got no dramas with them getting zone picks - for a certain amount of time while the club develops. It should only be for Gold Coast and Northern NSW draftees and there needs to be a finite end date.

My biggest argument in favour of zone picks is not that the Lions need them but that it is positive for Queensland footy to have homegrown talent in its home sides. It would be fanastic for the next Voss/Aker to be playing for a Queensland based club. On that basis, I would support zone picks for the Kangaroos, even if we missed out.

I don't understand what the rush is to get a team up there. It is not like the Lions home games are bursting at the seams and a second club is needed to meet demand.

One day a team will play out of the Gold Coast but setting dead lines and saying a 17th club might be needed I think is getting a little over excited.

Southport would be the 17th club if that happened so it will not be a new team from scratch. If they started a new team from scratch I give it 5 years and then be broke.

QLD CAN NOT SUPPORT 2 TEAMS!!!

Stop this madness immediately. The Roos would need a huge amount of support to be able to survive for longer than 5 years.

Is this meant to be Demetriou's great legacy? A second team in Qld is sheer stupidity.

You reckon you blokes hate this talk. Spare a moment for us poor buggers.

And BTW - we already have enough QLDers on our list.

Our club is trying to avoid re-locating at all costs, but, one way or another the AFL is determined to have a team on the Gold Coast. If we resist the move then they will move to create a 17th team and they will still get that level of support, probably significantly more if there is a new club.

If Sharks get a licence on the Gold Coast it won't bode well for the Lions, they will look to get a majority of their players from Queensland and will probably get significantly more short-term recruiting rights.

I'm all for zone selections, but I honestly think both Brisbane and Gold Coast should be in line to receive them. Also the region needs to be SEQ, not GC/Bris. - Personally I think GC is a stronger region, so it wouldn't be fair on Brisbane. I agree with the popular opinion though, it would help to reduce the go-home factor.

I've just heard the Josh Drummond is on the "poach list" now.... It's becoming a joke.

The Lions and the AFLQ put alot into the footy community up here and should reap the rewards. Why should dodgy Melbourne teams take the players, and then leave them dorment because of their poor player recruitment.

I'd support promoting Southport to the AFL purely because with the Lions, they'd keep our ever-growing list of talent local.

You can have zone concessions if we can divvy up Victoria again and have our own :thumbsu:

Definitely need zone selections if a second team is introduced, whether it be the Gold Coast Club or GC and Lions. I purchased a Kangaroos Carrara membership this year, not to directly support the Roos, but to support the growth of AFL in Queensland, and in particular on the Goldie. I actually think, short term, a second team may look a disaster, however, with two teams, the long term viability would be significantly stronger. It would give the AFL a lot more coverage in SEQ, which is by far the fastest growing area in the country, and a lot of those are coming from the southern states. Fremantle and Port were both slow out of the blocks, but now Freo (42,000 members) and Port (34,000 members) are proving pretty strong. This has had a mighty effect on the Crows and Eagles, and I think a second QLD side could adversley strenghthen the Lions. Besides how good would the rivalry be.

You can't compare Western Australia to Queensland. In WA footy is the major winter sport, in QLD it would be Rugby.

While Freo and Port were slow out of the blocks, that was because of the support for the first teams in the region. Lions don't have a huge level of support, without the Melbourne Fitzroy members it would be in a dangerously low position.

It is going to take a long time to grow the market in Queensland and a saturation of games is not going to speed the development, it is going to come from continued grass roots growth. The support in QLD will always be divided between Rugby and Footy. I just do not see the point of forcing a second team there now and have both of the teams struggle for a long time.

Adelaide and West Coast had supporters on a waiting list to become members before they let Fremantle and Port Adelaide in. The AFL needs to be patient, with both the Queensland and NSW markets. It is more viable to be a third team in Perth than a second in Queensland at this point in time.
