Meesen becomes a Demon

for melbournefc.com.au
MELBOURNEfc has today secured the services of John Meesen, after a trade was done to get the 201cm ruckman to the Club.
Melbourne exchanged its third round selection (Pick 37) to Adelaide for John Meesen on Thursday morning.
Originally from the Geelong Falcons, Meesen was a first round selection (Pick 8) in the 2004 National Draft. The 21 year-old spent three seasons at Adelaide, and developed his game strongly for Norwood in the SANFL.
General Manager of Recruiting and List Management Craig Cameron told melbournefc.com.au, “We are very pleased that we were able to strike a deal to get John to join the Club. John is an outstanding runner and at only 21 years of age, has plenty of potential to become a long term player with the Melbourne Football Club.”
John Meesen was excited after signing the final paper work telling melbournefc.com.au ´”I am really thrilled to be joining the Melbourne Football Club and can’t wait to get stuck into pre-season training on October 31.”

Great work from the club IMO. Meesen is a great prospect and to land him for only a third rounder is a super effort from Craig Cameron.
Now we need to get the TJ deal done for Pick 14 and we are cruising with Picks 4, 14 and 21!

:confused:have you guys been on the turps. Adelaide ****ed up choosing meesen at pick 8. The guy is the softest player you guys will ever see. Big body, scared to use it and runs like hes not moving anywhere, he runs to the wrong places and did i mention how soft he was.
so i wouldnt get carried away with him just yet although pick 37 odd is at least worth the try, but i am 98% sure you will be dissapointed just as real footy fans in adelaide are. soft and weak and soft.:p

Worth a go, beats waiting 3 years for a ruckman we could've selected with 37. Not expecting much but you never know.

Our hands were tied here.
Out of contract, only one club wanted him and they have the 3rd pick in the PSD.
This was as good as we were ever going to do.
As for Meesen, superb athletic ability, very nice skills. I think he should be a pretty handy AFL player. IF (and it's a big if) he can find some heart. A bit soft and lacking in intensity.
If you can get that into him, you'll have an excellent player.

I think you will find most Crows supporters except Drummond (who is a mad supporter of Meesens ex SANFL team) are glad to see the back of this guy. Just check out the crows board for he jubilation at getting anything in the trade.
Meesen is a deadset dud and you will be dissappointed in 2 years when he is delisted.

Our fans are being ridiculous. After Hudon announced he was leaving and when Meesen was making up his mind about the future, everyone was begging him to stay. Now everyone is calling him a dud. Funny how that works eh?
Don't worry about what's being said on the Adelaide board. Those bagging him would've seen him a few times in 3 years. I’ve seen all but maybe 1 or 2 of his games in the 3 years he’s been in Adelaide. The potential is there, first thing he needs to do is bulk up so he’s stronger in ruck contests as he tends to be pushed off too easily. He improved his leap a great deal this year and it’s been a big boost for him. His ruckwork has improved but he needs to stay aggressive. When he’s aggressive he’s a much better ruckman.
There were huge doubts about how his ruckwork would fare at AFL level but in his 2 games with very minimal game time, he was very impressive at ruck contests. You’ve got a lot to work with.

Geez he's a big boy isn't he.
Even if as most crows supporters (sans Drummond) think he's a dud, he'll do enough to put pressure on Jamar and Johnson and get them to pull their finger out, instead of the tag-teaming in and out of the team they have done for the last 2 years.
Lets hope he turns out better than we could have hoped, it'll be the first step to recovering from Thompson.

He played AFL quality games at Coopers Stadium. Too bad we never gave him a fair ride and continued to play Griffin while he was lucky to touch the ball half a dozen times.
Why are Crows fans so unrealistic? The injury he suffered this year was very serious and kept him out for 12 weeks. He came back slowly and yet everyone uses this as ammunition as to why he was a “dud”. Maric came back slowly too and barely had an impact for about 6 weeks, why do people overlook this?
See those pics are of him in Norwood colours.
MFC you have just landed Sandringham's new ruckman!

1) I couldn't even count the times that mediocre players have starred in a a few isolated SANFL games.
2) They played Griffin because they knew Meesen would leave at the end of the year. And if you believe that the 2 games he played were anything more than token games with the potential to increase his trade value (which they obviously didn't do) then you're an idiot. If he was so "promising" in those games, and was going to be at Adelaide beyond 2008, then he would have played the remaining games.
3) It's over. If you want to keep whinging about it, then just wear your red and blue Norwood gear every week and be a Melbourne supporter.

Drummond is the only one here who has posted anything with substance. I haven't seen alot of Meesen, but when he has been fit, he has not been as bad as some Crows fans will make you think. As someone said, at least this puts pressure on the other Melbourne rucks, and that's worth it for pick 37 in a shallow draft.

1. Great point. So he has a bad game he’s a dud, he plays well he’s a dud? Nice logic.
2. Of course they were gifted; I think that’s pretty obvious. His game against the Lions was impressive; he had 9 hit-outs and 6 possessions in 39% game time. 4 of his 9 hit-outs were to advantage and whether you like to admit it or not he actually beat Wood and Leuenberger and yet there is nothing but positives on these two guys.
3. Heart beats true for the Red and the Blue.

well a developed 201cm 21yr old ruckman at pick 37 doesnt seem too bad... seems to me like he was behind biglands and hudson then when biglands went down it was him, griffin or maric and griffin got the nod. Lets hope he can be something.... does anyone know why Jimmy Stynes isn't down there as a ruck coach?

It's always the way it goes.
Why do we need so many ruckman???
White, Johnson, Jamar and now Meeson???
with all the time spent developing Johnson doesnt it seem a waste??? especially when CC said we wanted draft picks

Meesen had the opportunity to debut last year when Hudson was out for the year and Clarke was injured. Maric had shown much more in the sanfl and hence Maric debuted. Griffin was a rookie last year so we would have had to upgrade him in order to debut but he was playing in the reserves for Centrals.
This year Maric was out with a hip injury from the pre-season, Meesen injured his knee in the first quarter of the nab cup and Griffin got his chance. Halfway through the year Maric and Meesen both made comebacks for their sanfl sides in the reserves. Maric worked back into the main sanfl side and Meesen was still in the reserves for Norwood for quite a while.
Please keep in mind that although Drummond has seen quite a bit of Meesen, he was wrapt with him from day 1 and is a huge Norwood fan. So take what he says in mind of those context. The rest of us have sometimes seen him playing sanfl via the abc or live and reading reports from Drummond and others on the board. Lets just say that many of us are far from impressed with his intensity and willingness to work hard to achieve an afl spot from how he was 'pumped' up by certain memebrs of the Adelaide board.
He is a very good size, has great endurance and talent, but is too easily pushed off the ball, doesn't know how to use what he has and seemingly not that interested in working hard for an afl spot.

So from the sounds of it I take it it is a question of his mental application?
Is he similar to any other ruckmen currently running around the AFL in the way he plays?

I think you'll find Griffin was on the senior list last year. ;)
But that’s a fair post, although I wasn’t always a huge Meesen fan. In his first year with the Legs he looked a long, long way off an AFL standard ruckman and I had doubts about him. I believe it was his 3rd game of SANFL football where he kicked 3.6 so the potential is there for him to develop into a handy key forward.
2006 was a solid year as he developed very well and was the lead ruckman for Norwood. He averaged 13 possessions, 13 hit-outs and 5 marks per game and was often the lone ruckman.
After re-signing with the club at the end of 2006 he was expected to make his mark this year but injury basically ruined that hope. He missed the first 3 months of the season and in his comeback with Norwood it’s safe to say he was dejected and it took him a while to get himself together. Hit back with some fine performances with Norwood and he went on to make his AFL debut, but these games were gifted to him.
On the whole he’s a very good prospect who is AFL ready and assuming he has a big pre-season he’ll have a successful year with the Demons.
So from the sounds of it I take it it is a question of his mental application?
Is he similar to any other ruckmen currently running around the AFL in the way he plays?
Perhaps Josh Fraser is the closest comparison.
Its proven that big men take longer to develop into AFL footballers, Hamish McIntosh is a prime example of this, hell even Dean Cox was rookie listed. He's 21 a long future and lots of development to come. Give him time.

please please please dont ever mention Leuenberger and Messen in the same breath again....
Messen will frustrate the life out of you melbourne fans, great rig, strong and big, great tank for a big man but can not believe for the life of me for someone that was a number 8 draft pick doesn't really know how to play footy, goes up in the centre square ruck contest and it's all downhill from there....amazingly timid....

But you said Meesen will frustrate the hell out of us, not if we don't expect anything of him. I don't think he'll be the saviour of our ruck stocks, and to be honest I would have preferred we didn't give up no. 37 to get him and just picked him up in the preseason draft.
The AFC's mistake of using no 8 on him has no bearing on how mfc supporters feel, and as far as I'm concerned he is the same as a rookie-listed player being promoted after 3 years.

We'll see where he goes but everyone here is happy with the pick-up. Perhaps a change from the Adelaide environment is what he needs and he'll have renewed passion at Melbourne. If this happens then I'll just sit and laugh at all you Crows supporters.

2005 struggled to make the norwood league team. battled away. burnt the ball all the time.
2006 played 20 games (by default as there were no other ruckmen due to injuries). had 1 bog vs sturt. made the best about 5 times. kicked 4.14 for the season.
then got injured in feb 07...
2007 played 4 ressies games (twice listed in the best with a goal tally of 3.9)
2007 has played 2 good games (vs south and glenelg) out of his 5.
2007 played 2 token games for the crows. did nothing. check drummonds champion data numbers.
average in the ruck. soft as butter. atrocious kick for goal. no nous where to follow the ball or get into position.
a good tackler and pretty mobile for a big bloke, but thats where the positives end.
i'm a norwood supporter and member. i've seen him plenty since 05 and he wont be missed. good luck with him - u never know, sometimes a change of scenery works a treat, but don't hold your breath.
