Very sad.

However i reckon Optimus Prime's death in the transformers movie was way worse.
I remember being about seven years old and crying my eyes out when he died, even now when i watch that movie i feel sad.

Watching Phoenix choke again and again is like watching a comedy movie, nothing sad about it.

Being stuck on dial up speed for the next 2 days (I should have never taught dad how to use torrents :p), the video wont load up. I assume it is Muphasa's death in Lion King though. And yes, saddest animated scene of all time. Possibly saddest scene full stop.

It is indeed Mufasa dying in The Lion King. I'd wager I'm not the only one who despite having seen it hundreds of times, still sits there saying (sometimes yelling) "COME ON MUFASA! YOU CAN DO IT!"

C'mon Scar was a great villain, one of Disney's best. Plus Jeremy Irons singing that great song :thumbsu:

Interesting fact: From the line "You won't get a sniff without me!" it wasn't Jeremy Irons. It was Jim Cummings who was the voice of Ed the Hyena. This is because Jeremy's vocal chords were strained from the amount of cigarettes he was smoking.

I love the song though.

Saddest scene in animated TV was in Futurama... Seymour was Fry's 20th century dog, who he taught to bark Walking on Sunshine.

Seymour's fossilized remains are found by Fry in the 31st century at a museum exhibit of Panucci's Pizza. Professor Farnsworth has the technology to extract DNA from the remains and create a clone of Seymour, complete with memories, but Fry declines, reasoning that since the readings indicated Seymour had lived to the age of 15, 12 years after Fry was frozen, Seymour must have formed new memories and eventually forgotten Fry. In reality, Seymour had waited outside Panucci's Pizza for Fry's return every day until he died.

Seymour has to come 2nd to Mufasa. Those two are clearly streets ahead of anything else though, be it animated or live action.

Depends on if you are a dog person... I personally find the Seymour scene more distressing than the Lion King scene as I have a very loyal pooch of my own.

Each to their own though.

I've never seen the Lion King but I blubbered like a big girl for about half an hour after the Seymour episode.

Thanks for posting this thread MWNN even though it is sad it reminded my how great a film the Lion King is. As I've got older I've stopped watching the latest animated films as much but seriously is there a better animated film than this one. Looking at it I don't mean the actual animation as I know modern movies have improved but as a whole package I'd go so far and call this movie a masterpiece. I know it was made in 1994 and there were a lot of quality films made that year like Pulp Fiction and Shawshank and Forest Gump, not saying this was better but I think it should have been nominated best picture alongside these films.

By far, i knew it would be this scene before opening it.

Was my favourite movie as a kid and that was one of the saddest times as a kid ... i could not reason why he would die.

Seymour is also a very sad scene, i couldn't believe how sad i was despite being much older when i saw it.

Watership Downs as mentioned was also another sad animated scene.

Another worthy mention is Dot and The Kangaroo.

There is one animation scene that stands out for me

Animal Farm when Boxer was taken to the Knackery in exchange for money to buy a case of whiskey for the pigs when they tricked everyone into thinking they were taking him to the Vet and the relisation of how worse of the animals had become and how they fought back

It has to be Grave of the Fireflies. I won't link to a particular scene because I don't think it's on Youtube and also because it you need to watch the whole thing for the enormity of the tragedy to hit you, but it's the saddest film I've ever seen.

The opening and closing scenes hit very hard, once you've seen the entire movie.

Also the fireflies lighting up the shelter is a beautiful scene.

And the final scene on hte hill with the sunset is heartbreaking.

Those who've seen it will agree with me, I'm sure.

Grave of the Fireflies is a brilliant film. Saddast part of the film is that scenes that we saw with the two young children actually did happen across Japan around that time.

Shows the futility of war

Agree with likka

I'm a dog person, and have a very loyal dog of my own, and I find the scene in Futurama more distressing than the scene in the Lion King, because of the fact that it's a dog in Futurama and a Lion in the Lion King

Yes, it was like Oz, they killed off characters all the time just as you were building relationships with them. As much as any kids cartoon can be like Oz anyway!:o

Yep definately agree with you here. That certain scene made me shed a few tears. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this topic.

Second saddest would definately be the Seymour episode - just about anyone who has had a dog will get choked up watching that. :(

Saw on the wiki entry for jurassic bark that originally they were going to make it he found his mother, but they thought it'd be too upsetting. Personally, its much more upsetting with a dog, and would not have worked nearly as well with the mother as it would've been out of place with the rest of the series.
And im a dog person

Seymour in futurama for me. For two reasons.

1) I'm a dog person (to no doubt freak some out I have the ashes of my Rottie, who had to be put down at 11 last year, in an urn beside my computer)
2) Putting aside the whole Seymour can be brought back by some future technology bit, the whole him pining for his lost owner is realistic and anyone who is/was a pet owner would be hard pressed not to look at their pet and feel something. The Lion King is sad, but it's 100% pure fantasy with talking Lions, so doesn't have the 'resonance' with potentially happening in the real world that the Seymour situation does.

Now that I think about it they made a few more Land Before Times didnt they, I rememeber I wanted to rent LBT 3 or 4, I cant remember, but the old man wouldnt let me cause we had too many videos, I remember crying in the video store cause of that ahaha.

A few nights ago I watched an animated film called Plague Dogs
Hands down this is easily the saddest most depressing thing I have ever seen.
For those of you who think the scene in Futurama is sad this movie and final scene are about 100 times more depressing and upsetting.
If you are a dog person and you ever come across this film do yourself a favour and do not watch it, seriously I would show kids horror films like Wolf Creek ect before submitting them to this.

Same as with a few ppl here that I thought of the Lion King straight away. It is one of my all time faves as when I was a kid this was my favourite film, I still have it on VHS, although I haven't watched it in years. That scene was shattering and when Simba goes up to his dad and shakes his body and lifts his ear up to only see it flap back down again and he realises that he is dead, I cried a lot when I saw that. And Scar was brilliant, coming up to Simba and telling him it was his fault and to run away and never come back....pure evil. Looks like I'll have to watch the video again.
