With Melbourne clubs trying to poach every piece of talent Brisbane has, who is next to be offered $1m to move to Melbourne?

Cousin Jed

I think they've listed every possible one for this year. I hope

So 1st one for next year wil be.........Stiller

Black is about our only uncontracted player who hasn't been offered bucket loads of cash to go to Melbourne, so I'll say him.

Poaching of this sort is inevitable when you have such a dedicated "best available" policy. Leuenberger is going to be a freaking gun, no question, but if you don't spread your talent across the park (that's not a veiled insult, although I understand it could be taken that way) there will be quality kids missing out on opportunities. I'm sure Trapper Johnstone will be a good player for you guys, and Cam Wood likewise for us. :thumbsu:

It's got nothing to do with players not getting opportunities. The whole Brisbane list is up for grabs.

Agree to disagree.

It might apply to say Wood and Hadley, but Charman, Adcock, Drummond, Hooper, Brennan, etc. are all starting 22 players who won't be starved of opportunities.

I'll agree to disagree as well Sampler. I never got the impression last year that the 2nd ruck position was set in stone. Wood was still very much a chance to be number 2 ruck and go ahead of Mcdonald & the Berger. Nothing against the kid but if the reason he was keen to leave was lack of opportunities then i'm surprised that he only really gave himself half a year to prove he belonged in the Brisbane side.

But in what sense are Drummond, Charman, Adcock etc up for grabs? Adcock will re-sign, Charman already has, Drummond I hadn't even heard he was a target?

I don't think your players are much more targeted than anyone else's. Somewhat, sure, but the "whole Brisbane list"?

Because their managers have Melbourne clubs in their year all year.

Not sure but it is not smart is it.

I guess we will cite salary cap pressures.

It seems that most of the uncontracted players have been targeted by Melbourne clubs this year.

If this is what has happened this year, next year I am going to explode next year with offers flying left right and centre with one number 16 out of contract.

Perhaps Carlton can Tank again and go after the uncontracted Brown. Imagine having Brown and Judd in the same team:D

I'm starting to think its time the club changed their policy for signing contracts and when....too many players out of contract at this time of year makes it easy pickings for everyone else and we lose out...again! Sign 'em up mid year! This has got to stop....

Grimreepah
11 Oct 2007, 21:39
Everyone seems to think it's a simple matter of signing players earlier. Maybe if we do that it leaves us less flexibility to match offers for the remaining players. People are quick to point the finger, but it's a lot more complicated process than everyone is making out.

11 Oct 2007, 22:21
Guys everyone is up for grabs...Cam Wood was conracted until end of 2009...and it appears half our list is uncontracted...what would make it easier, becasue it just about happens every year, is the AFL introduce a policy that Lions players only get 1 year deals, then it is open slather on our list...at least that way we can plan for it and stay away from this crap from beginning of trade period until end of PSD and just hope for the best...that is what we are doing anyway:(

I have a good idea. What about if the AFL introduce a 10% salary cap retention allowance to fight off the raiders. Then they could give us first pick at all Queenslanders.

Imagine if we had like Riewoldt and then the up and comer Tom Williams, just to name a few, that would be great...

First pick of all Queenslanders would be good. But not ALL, maybe two before the draft. :thumbsu: But the AFL isn't serious about developing the Brisbane area anymore, it's about the GC now.

Agreed.

Also think it's simplistic to say well Vossy, Scotty and Johnno are off the list now - that should free up some space. It's impossible to make a judgment on something whose ins and outs are not fully comprehensible.

Agree with that. We still have some pretty big stars on our list so it is hard to know how much room we have in the cap. Hopefully though over the next year or so our TPP get to a level we we can comfortably retain our players and not have a nightmare 7 days like we have just had (Hope the nightmare ends about 2pm today).

you are going to be the forgotten team when this GC teams gets going unfortunatly.I think its a huge mistake personally having lived in QLD most of my adult life,I remember living in brisbane and going to all their games in the mid-ninties when the grandstands where going up and the Pie supporters nearly out-numbered the Brisbane ones, funny enough Brisbane was my 2nd team til they spanked us 2 years in a row:mad:

Qld at the present can only support one AFL side, that is a fact,I dont care how many "expats" live on the Gold Coast. People think that because the GC has 400k+ population that it can sustain a AFL team. You need crowds of at least 25k-35 week in, week out to sustain in this comp let alone thrive. GC has a massive tourist population that is seasonal that wont follow the football week-in,weekout.the AFL is making a huge mistake if it puts this team in,but all it is thinking about is more TV coverage which = advertising dollars which= more money. A Gold coast team would be a novelty for the GC region for 1-2 years then it would become a huge white elephant for the AFL for years

just watch mate, We are his preferred destination, and we will put a ridiculous price on his head just to ensure that he makes his way to windy hill where he can be reunited with GO'D. Why else do you think we would make him an offer of close to 1 mil and then not pursue him in trade week. We are enticing him into the PSD for a reason.

5th pick in the PSD.
Stop deluding yourself, if you think one of those other 4 will not be able to pay the same you are wrong.
Didn't pursue him in trade week because it takes 2 sides to agree to trade, & clearly one side was not listening.
You real are struggling to get your head around the whole trade/drafting concept.

Time will tell.

Being the greedy/shameless bastards Essendon have shown to be of late I have no doubt the scenario you put up was contemplated by them. I wouldn't be proud of that if I was you. It's shamefull for a supposedly powerfull and proud club to carry on in such a manner. Where's the honour??

But if Essendon were determined to pick Brennan up I don't believe they'd take the risk of others picking him up in the PSD. How would they know what the other clubs are able to pay??

My Opinion is that any club that puts up the most money, he will go there. He has a child and he wants to give his family the best, and even if Freo (not saying they would) put up a good offer he would go. Not saying my opinion is anywhere near right, im just saying. Lets just hope he somehow wants to stay in Brisbane.

Your knowlwdge/arrogance on the subject is summed up by one question that you have asked elsewhere, being:
Will Jared Brennan be training with us prior to the PSD draft?

Perhaps we will leave it on that note, till either the PSD or he signs with Lions.

If he goes in the PSD he will likely set a price. The first club to pick him for that price has him even if a later club like Essendon is willing to go higher they will miss out to those who have first option.

if he doesn't sign by the list lodgement deadline he will be classified as delisted, therefore he can train with the club of his choice. Granted it will be only a couple of weeks but he can do it.

and reluctant Lion- Essendon will arrange with him to put their absoloute spending limit on his head so that they have no regrets like "should we have put more money on his head".
