and admit they stated trades don't get done anymore.
It's been a big week in footy and there's nearly two hours to go.
Taken me by surprise.
Is it because of the proposed lack of depth in the draft?
But then again teams are trading for picks.
Is it because Sydney were very effective in building a strong list through trades?
Geelong to a lesser extent added Ottens and Mooney to their Premiership side.
Or is it just a one off?

What have we done so far? Not much.
Look at the players that are getting shifted. Aside from the Judd specitical there have been a lot of average/unproven players moving.

12 Oct 2007, 12:30
Schnider unproven?
Travis Johnstone unproven?
Ben Hudson unproven?
Steven King unproven?
McMahon unproven?
Brad Symes just played in a Grand Final.
Dempster is a Premiership player.
Morton is an extremely talented youngster.

Several of those players are in the average catagory (Johnstone, Hudson etc).
Also playing in a GF doesn't make you a superstar.
You left out the big Meeson, Moran, Mattner trades.
Where has King been traded to?

Agreed in principle to go to StKilda.
Deal yet to be finalised.
Charlie Gardiner to go as well.

Johnstone and Hudson are better than average.
They're very good footballers and contrary to your previous statement, they aren't proven.
Regardless, this wasn't so much about quality but sheer volume of trades.
There is a common thought that trade week is a waste because nothing gets done these days. And it was probably accurate, however this year we're going to see at least double the amount of trades done that were done last year.
Just throwing this up for discussion as to why this might be the case.
There are plenty of other threads to discuss the quality players, this is more about the turn around in the number of trades being done.
King to StKilda according to SEN.

You no longer have to use picks you trade for.
Geelong are effectively clearing cap space and rather than delisting those blokes, they have given them a chance to go to a club directly.

Thats not what im surprised about. Pick 90 for 2 players, including an ex captain seems awfully unfair to Geelong. Im sure they could have got something more if they tried.

They can just use that pick to secure their F/S, can they not?

I don't think so (unless of course they use each pick beforehand).
Because you can't pass on a pick and then use another.
They'll use their last live pick for their F/S.

Gardiner is a battler, don't think he will go very far in the AFL. Could be wrong but I doubt it. Either way he would have no trade currency at all.
King, as great a player as he used to be, is very much a if it works great, but probably won't work situation. He had a very solid GF which in my opinion kept him on an AFL list for next year. But it's doubtful he will be a significant pickup. Possible, yeah, but doubtful.
I don't think Geelong could have got much more than that for them

Could the quality of last year's draft be having an effect?
Last year you wouldn't have have been able to get a good draft pick for a given player, so instead you keep him on your list until this year when you can get a better deal. So now there's an excess of potential tradees (not to be confused with tradies).
Just a thought.
(Like a discrete logistic population model - one for the maths nerds out there!)

That looks ominously dangerous for 15 other clubs! They are going to have a very strong list over the next few years.

22 is the Dogs pick - I'm pretty sure they haven't obtained it through a trade either.

Has surprised me a little too but then again maybe its a reflection of what clubs think of this years draft.

Hadley to Carlton for pick 52.
i can't believe there were 17 trades and we weren't a part of any of them.
Few more trades than i thought would happen as well including a very big one. A number of reasonably good players traded as well.
I can claim to be half right though. I knew we wouldnt be finishing with a big week.

At least Knights stuck to his guns saying that we would have a quiet week and not trade any of our draft picks away. Im very happy with that.
You have to admire what the cats have done though. Rather than delisting players they have secured a future for them at the clubs expense. Apart from King they could have just sat on Callan and Gardiner but instead made trades for picks (90+96 ithink) they most probably will not even use.
And even the deal for king, you get the feeling that they didnt push too hard, but facilitated the trade out of respect and or apology. Obviously salary cap issues motivated it but they could have gone harder

There may be more to it than that, although i'm not certain.
They have a father and son and since no one bid, the rules say you use your last choice....

Last LIVE choice. That means they have to use every pick up until then if they want to use that pick, because once you pass one round, thats it, you cant come back into the draft.

St. Kilda are doing an Essendon, top-up players, could bite them in a couple of years!
Only difference is that we were still up there when we looked at top up players, they havent been up there for ages and are looking for short term success.
They need someone to replace hammill, someone who can earn $500K a season and not play.:D:D:D
If we had no ruckman at all I know I'd rather pick up Steven King for nothing than throw a kid to the wolves before he is ready, I also would have done the Schneider deal.
