View Full Version : Not so sure if Keating is a good appointment?

Don't get me wrong, absolutely love Crackers; was top notch in the Grand Finals....I just think that they are totally different players and would hope that Leueys' development doesn't suffer because of it.
Keating was a smack the ball forward as far as you can type ruckman, then run to the forward line; whilst young Leuey seems to be a finesse ruckman who wins the tap and then plays as a midfielder around the ground, but can also take a mark up forward.
Hopefully it turns out to be a good relationship, I have my doubts though :(

Never doubt Lethal.

I've posted about this before, we need more outside input. Having club champions back is great, but it only gets us so far. Fresh ideas and experiences are in order, especially when most of these guys that are staying involved with the club actually played with a lot of the guys on the current list and played under Leigh themselves.

Never doubt Lethal.
I assume that was the attitude Collingwood took to Lethal for quite a few years.
Having said that I'm very impressed with what Lethal has achieved with the list of late.
Would have preferred Rehn to stay on. But I can understand why they may be cautious of hiring an outsider after Brennan has been coaxed into possibly shafting the Lions by a former assistant coach.

Crackers is the king of delivering when needed most.

Good point, although I think it's fair to say that pinpoint palm downs weren't Crackers' strong suit.
We've made many good decisions before though, so I'm confident this'll work out similarly.

Wasn't Crackers known as the September Specialist?

Yep, or Mr September.

Yep, or Mr September.
Well that will come in handy when we get to that stage. He will have the right knowledge to hand down to the young guys. At first I wasn't sure about him taking on the job but I have faith and believe he will give it a good shake at it.
He'd have recent first-hand knowledge of what it's like to play against the tap ruckmen. If you're a clever enough player you learn its tricks even if you don't use them yourself.

I'm trying to imagine Crackers as coach:
Leuenberger: 'what should I do if I'm starting to tire?'
Crackers: 'bash it forward as far as you can.'
Leuenberger: 'how should I get on top early?'
Crackers: 'bash it forward as far as you can.'

I think he got that nickname because he was injured a lot and normally came good around August.

That's true. More importantly, he was also coached by some smart ruck coaches.
Still, I have my reservations about the appointment. Hopefully, I am wrong.
I have reservations on this as well. Love the guy in a entirely hetro way but he was an 'old style' ruckman that the game passed by with rule changes etc. He also wasnt great around the ground, like we seem to be grooming our current ruckmen. Sure you can teach people to play differently to you but whats the point? Not saying it wont work out but unsure if its the best appointment ever.

Craig Lambert does alot of work with ruckmen as well, don't forget.
He'll cover the 'around the ground' stuff.

Charmo is quite a good tap ruckman and I think he could fill in for Leuey what Crackers lacked in that area .

Haha...SO breaking down the barriers with radical ideas and forward, modern thinking Grim? I like it.
'Hulk smaaaaaash!' is just one of the great, inspiring speeches I'd like to hear from Crackers at 3 quarter time.

I am not really an unbiased contributor to this thread I must say.
Crackers is an absolute legend in my book, will always be one of my alltime favorites.
I held it together when Vossy did his lap, but when Crackers went round the week before hand, I must have got some dust in my eye or something. :o

Think that same bit of dust must have got me the following week with Vossy. The Gabba should do something about all that dust, always seems to happen when we say goodbye to one of our legends. ;)
I am sure Crackers is smart enough to understand that Leuy has different strengths to himself and his job is not to make Clarke Keating clones.
Just because he played a certain style does not mean he doesnt understand the facets of the game.
Give the man some credit. He is not a cave man.

Now whenever someone states that (including me), I just have visions of...
