I understand that we had to give these guys a chance at another club, and that trade period is an avenue for actually sending players to a club of their preference (somewhat), AND that we are planning ahead for salary cap issues. But i still think we could have and should have received much more in return from St Kilda...for both players individually, let alone as a package of 2!

It was a good deal, if only because it sends out the message that the premiership is now history and that we are focused on continuing our success and that sentimentality should play no part in it.

We did 3 things that will continue our long term success.

- Freed up salary cap room
- Gave our youngsters an opportunity. With Gardiner and King and playfair still around the likes of West, Gamble, Djerkurra, prissa were never going to get senior football. They will now.
- Allowed new batch of youngsters on the list. With a clean out of some of our depth. We now have a swag of picks, and the best recruiter in the land. Watch out AFL the cats a building a highly talented youngster brigade!

They did what they had to do to maintain the list for next year. At least they went out and got clubs for those guys dropped rather than just delisting them. I thought they handled the whole thing better than most clubs would.

Was not a trade as such, more like finding them a comfortable retirement home. All the players that were traded have been there for years, have served the club well and the club has thanked them in this manner as their reward.

We used to be criticised for being "noble in defeat" and now people are sticking in the boots for being "noble in victory" and actually doing something worthwhile for former players - and despite our personal reservations about each one, they have all contributed to our being on top now. I cannot understand how posters can think that this club is just simply being generous to clubs like St Kilda; they are looking carefully at our future.

TO me it makes more sense to gradually clean out our list now ( and continue to do so as long as success continues) when we still have a very strong top 22. The alternative is to try for say 4 years of success and then have a mass exodus and be faced with no good young players coming through. Now we make room for youngsters like davenport, thompson, djekurra, varcoe, west etc to come through and be established players when it comes time for corey, lingy, mooney, scarlett and co to retire. An excellent long term move by Geelong

I think it was a good move strategically. We weren't really going to garner any advantage with regards to draft picks, so that aspect was basically moot by the time that trade came to the table. We gave a couple of blokes the chance to move on and we didn't try and bend anyone over the table unnecessarily in the process.

I think you are missing it here, the reason they left for such a low pick is that the Cats didn't want a pick and that most likely another club wouldn't give up much for these two. Plus, from the media so far states this culling would give the Cats another 700k to play with next year. Will a little more culling, i.e. Spencer and a couple of delistings, surely that would go up closer to 900k.

The King and Charlie trade was just for good measure, to let them go to another club without having the embarassment of going to the PSD and not being picked up. That is a club showing gratitude to past players, whom the cannot retain (due to them not wanting a pay cut, and Charlie not really getting a further chance).

What annoys me though is that King has stated a few things thus far, implying that the club owed him and allowed for this trade.

Hate to say it Kingy, but LOYALTY goes both ways. You should have taken a pay cut for all the years you were injured and the club stood by you.

It shows his lack of loyalty and leadership by what has happened, something Harley was quick to stifle by saying he'd instantly take a pay cut to keep this team together. That is leadership.

Definitely. Gives St Kilda a much better shot at playing finals next year.

As a family friend of Charlie, I really like the way this was handled. Instead of just delisting him they made the effort to make sure a VFL premiership player had an opportunity to continue his career without the indiginity of the PSD.

All things being considered Geelong did they right thing by all parties.
They gave these guys oppotunities to further their careers at the highest level, and they freed up some valuable space on their salary capwhich will help them keep this group together.

Good move Cats.

Exactly. Lets face it. Kingy could've been offered all week and if there wasn't much interest then he may've been delisted out of neccessity. If that was the case then it would've shown that we hadn't learnt from the past with former captains such as Bourke & Bews forced elsewhere to seek opportunities. This was, as much as it pains me to say it (coz I wanted Kingy for 1 more year), was a win-win situation.

I just think we should of got better draft picks from this deal, I knows its due to SC but we could of got a couple of picks from 25-40.

I wouldnt call it a trade.. geelong are gonna throw pick 90 away, more like just helpin these go to a club of their choice rather than some scum like freo picking them up in the psd

Or no club at all. That was the option, like stated before, Shane Woewodin realised too late that he should have taken a pay cut.

I think it shows all the players on the list that if they give good service to the club, even if they're not the most talented footballer (Gardiner), the club will still do its utmost to send them to the club of their choice even if it brings no tangible benefit (to the GFC). Promotes loyalty, lets players know the club will look after them. Lonergan is more of the same.

I dont doubt we're a team fit for a king (maybe we should look at getting jake king from the tigers) but we just couldn't afford the big fella no more. suggestions?
