Was a local zone selection of some sort I believe.

Yeah he was. I think it was called the Qld Zone selection and it would have been in the 1991 draft. He would have been on Morningside's list at the time wouldn't he?

So what records would indicate this, was it a certain pick selection in a draft still?

Born in country Vic, moved to Qld when he was about 10 or 11.

Anyone know around what pick he and Aker would have gone in the draft?

Hard to say - the draft back in '91 wasn't the science it is today. Voss was very highly regarded though.

I'd have to do some digging, but from very vague memory I can't recall it being a system similar to today's where you gave up say a 3rd round pick to pre-select a local player.
You have to remember this was back in the days when they had 3 different drafts instead of 2. a pre-season, a mid-season and the national draft. There were varying zone selections available to newer clubs, along with pre-draft selections, zoned players, uncontracted player selections, competition selections as well as father son selections.
Michael Voss was listed as a Zone selection.
At the time, this was treated in the same way as the Under 19s were for the AFL clubs.
In the same way you won't find where Anthony Koutouifidis or Mark Mercuri were drafted (they weren't)
They all came through a junior development squad.
The week before his debut for the Bears he kicked 14 goals for Queensland in an U17 game.

Michael Voss was a priority pick which was utilised via zone selection. I believe the Bears/Lions got two picks of local lads for maybe 3 to 4 years because of their initial problems with getting players up there and administration problems, etc.
It was an effort by the AFL to make strides up there by giving them extra draft picks and players from their home state.

While you're there mate, could you tell us how Nathan Buckley ended up at Collingwood one year after he was drafted by the Brisbane Bears. I've been trying to work that out for years.

They build a huge Voss trap, loaded it up with Sherrins and waited ...

Traded for Craig Starcevich, Troy Lehmann and two draft picks, one of whom was Chris Scott.
Worked out very well for us but was regarded as possibly over-payment at the time.
