Also I think that the players in here should have to play at least 50 games to be elidgable.

Griffen has no chance.

McLean was the best in Cooney's draft and I think you'd struggle to slot Cooney in from 13-15 considering the talent there.

Threads like this are crazy. Need much stronger criteria. Need to clarify if on potential or proven. Think one like guy did on (as per draft position) is a good one, even if you did it over all time. If so Chris Grant gets the gig at pick 105. try find a better value for money pick than that. And don't say Hird. Pies supporters get over Thomas, Pendulbry. nearly every team has at least 2 quality young mids.
Rich - Deledio Foley (beats thomas pendles)
Carlton - Gibbs Murphy (wins again)
Melbourn - McLean, Jones (pies win this one)
Dogs - Cooney Griffen (wins)
Essendon - Stanton ????
the list goes on. Thomas and Pendlebury (and don't care i cant spell his name) are overrated. Also melbourne guy saying McLean is better than Cooney, not the sharpest tool in the shed. People underate Cooney outside of dogs supporters. Has battled through OP for much of his career and has been a quality player.

I don't think Hird at pick 79 beats Grant at pick 105. Grant was a star. Hird just has the Browlow (by 1 vote ahead of Grant) in '96 and a flag. Recognition is also aided by playing for a powerfull club. There are players at smaller clubs which just don't get it. Grant was dominant in his day. Robert Harvey misses out on being included with Bucks,Hird,Voss despite winning 2 Browlows. And guy who says Cooney and Griffen havnt achieved. absolute fool. Griffen has played 2.5 years. and was a little down for half of this year, until then was considered a gun for age. Cooney has battled OP. You clearly don't watch their good games.

pick 79 and 105 aren't that different, it's not like it's the difference between pick 1 and 27.

I'd say Hird and Grant are pretty much equal as the best value gets ever.

I actually disagree, this will probably seem biased, but I think Murphy has shown a heap. I remember when Cousins started wearing a tag and just could not get into games at all. Murphy was murdered as a kid tagged week in week out, and still averaged about 18 disposals I think. That is actually a massive achievement for a second year player.

Good to see the love for Daniel Harris. But to be honest, I would but Kane Cornes above him, and Cox ahead of many of those players. Cox as a pure midfielder would be better then 3/4 of the midfielders on an AFL list.

Top 15 Draft from 2000-2006

I include both the pre-season draft and rookie elevations for each year.

My picks are based on several factors. First and foremost is body of work, the more achievement the better. Secondly is potential. Value of pick was a very minor factor.

1. D. Kerr
2. C. Judd
3. D. Cox
4. N. Riewoldt
5. L. Franklin
6. L. Hodge
7. J. Bartel
8. S. Burgoyne
9. K. Cornes
10. N. Dal Santo
11. G. Ablett Jr
12. S. Mitchell
13. C. Bolton
14. J. Koschitzke
15. M. Egan

Nearest misses were A. Selwood, J. Selwood, A. Davey, S. Thompson and N. Malceski.

Looking through it recent drafts have been really poor. The two best players from the 2002 draft were taken at 53 and 64. Also... Easy to see why Geelong and WC have been so good recently with their dominance of this. St Kilda would be better if their members could stay healthy. Sydney only have 2 guys in contention and one was recylced. Adelaide had only Thompson who was close, Fremantle, Melbourne, Carlton, Richmond, WB and Essendon weren't even close to having anyone, kind of funny given their respective positions this year, its like the last 6 years just suddenly caught up with them last year.

One thing this has shown me is that you certainly build a team through the draft, Sydney are some kind of freakish exclusion from this rule, but WC, Hawthorn and Geelong all dominate this list and barring something major, will be amongst the top teams in the league for the forseeable future.

Deledio>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Murphy.

wtf has Murphy done?

Well he has two seasons is that correct???

Season 1)

Murphy has the second best 10 games (statistically of any recent draftee) behind Hasleby and ahead of Judd...

Season 2)

Wears a tag for almost every game of the year

Let's look at how others who were heralded juniors went early in their career, remember as kids these were the superstars!!.
Ben Cousins (2nd season 14.61 disposals)
Chris Judd (2nd Season 18.17 disposals)
Paul Hasleby (2nd Season 19.2 disposals)
Adam Goodes (2nd season 13.41 disposals)

Marc Muphy 17.91 disposals

Now take your blinkers off and realise that NONE of those player wore the level of tag all season in year 2 that Murphy did this year and you will see what he was touted as being "that good". Marc Murphy is going to be a superstar and I think his season 3 will be outstanding with Stevens and Judd in the middle.

Take your own advise and remove Didak as no. 7.

I was going to say, Didak before Ablett?

I include both the pre-season draft and rookie elevations for each year.

My picks are based on several factors. First and foremost is body of work, the more achievement the better. Secondly is potential. Value of pick was a very minor factor.
Adelaide had only Thompson who was close.

I think you're forgetting Rutten, who is being left out of an awful lot of these lists. Easily in the top 15.
I agree about Thompson, however - close, but not quite top 15 (at this stage, anyway).

I don't really think Rutten is close to the top 15 to be honest. He is a good player, but he isnt great, which everyone on that list is. He is very much the product of a system, he gets routinely beaten in games I see when he is caught on the rebound. Don't get me wrong, I'd love him at the Swans, but we have no KP defenders and he is a very good player, but I wouldn't have him in the top 15 or 20 for that matter. He does add to what Adelaide has got in that period. I also really rate Chris Knights who I think is going to be on that list before long if he keeps going the way he is.

For all those talking about Pavlich... check the year he was drafted and then think about why no one is including him.

Really? Well, I'd disagree. For a guy who gets "routinely beaten" on the rebound, he barely ever conceeds goals - in fact, since he's been playing full back, I believe he's conceeded less goals on average than any other full time full back. Whilst our gameplan helps to a degree, it can't be completely attributed to that - you only have to look at the games he missed this season to see that he's a quality player. Lloyd and Pavlich both kicked 5 during the 3 weeks he missed, despite the best efforts of Bock, Stevens and McGregor - all quality defenders in their own right. I don't think Rutten has had more than 4 kicked on him since 2005, and even then it's a very rare occurance for his opponent to kick more than 2. He's one of the top 3 full backs in the league and was AA in his first full season in the position. Definately top 15, or at least close. I'd have him ahead of Bolton, Egan and Kozi (whom is far more talented, but hasn't achieved as much due to injury) on your list. He's easily our most important player at the moment, and is a superior player to Thompson. Knights had a very impressive season, but he's got a long way to go - particularly in terms of decision making, composure and disposal before he goes close to making that list. Brilliant ball winner, and a steal at pick 56, but has a lot to work on.

All-time draft from 2000-2006

Think carefully, as this is a very difficult task.

1. Chris Judd
2. Nick Riewoldt
3. James Bartel
4. Luke Hodge
5. Dean Cox
6. Daniel Kerr
7. Alan Didak
8. Gary Ablett Jnr.
9. L.Franklin
10. S.Mitchell
11. N.DalSanto
12. B.Mclean
13. S.Pendlebury
14. M.Murphy
15. J. Selwood

Didak at 7 is an absolute joke, as is Pendlebury at 13. Please...

For a start I think this thread needed a few more guidelines as to what this top 15 was for as it is a little ambiguous. Whether its just the top 15 players picked since 2000, or whether like a rookie or late draft pick gains a little in value due to the fact that stars are much harder to find with these picks than say a Judd, Riewoldt, Hodge etc who required absolutely no skill in selecting at all. Perhaps also their importance to a club or a side, like a key position player is often much harder to replace than a midfielder etc.

As a crows supporter, one player who has not been mentioned who could rate near a lot of these players is Graham Johncock, absolute gun, just had a few unlucky impact injuries over his time. Rutten definitely deserves a mention, possibly the most important part of the Adelaide side, All-Australian in his first full season of footy, will win his position in pretty much every game he plays, beats Jonothan Brown in a one on one quite often too.

Scott Thompson is also close, only still has a few parts of his game that let him down, and Chris Knights/Nathan van Berlo/Nathan Bock should all push this list given a good run next year.

If this top 15 were rated on "smart" picks, as in stars from the late in the draft or rookie drafts etc, Rutten, Johncock, Knights, Bock and Mattner would definitely rate pretty highly.

Clearly a one eyed football follower... Alan didak above 8 of the next footballers on that list is even a joke...I'd have him in about 20-30

Also even though Jimmy has just won a brownlow, I wouldn't have him as 3rd... Interesting thread though

Im happy Jimmy Bartel gets recognised.

Cannot belive the amount of people leaving out Rutten (Star people) and Brock Mclean (Shits on Pendlebury, Murphy, Didak etc)

Didak in this group ends credibility for the first list.

For me it would be

1. C. Judd
2. D.Kerr
3. N. Reiwoldt
4. L.Hodge
5. G.Ablett Jnr
6. J.Bartel
7. B. Franklin
8. N.Del Santo
9. M Murphy
10. J.Selwood
11. D.Cox
12. D.Harris
13. S.Pendlebury
14. K.Cones
15. H.Shaw

So you think Murphy as a number 1 pick was better then Cox as a Rookie pick?? Bias much?

You are comparing these guys to Judd, Ablett, Kerr, Cox, Brown people like that geeeezzz some people have a huge amount of bias when posting

pick 79 and 105 aren't that different, it's not like it's the difference between pick 1 and 27.

I'd say Hird and Grant are pretty much equal as the best value gets ever.
Dean Kemp? I think he was like 120 or something.

Can you read?

Not comparing them in terms of skill or ability, although if Bock were left at CHB for an entire would push AA, but if you include the fact that they weren't picked up as early first round draft picks, but as rookie selections they have been very valuble. It is the later picks where a recruitment officer shows his genious, if he can find gems that no one else has, i would rate this much higher than the ability to choose Judd with what #2 or 3, was it? Brown and Ablett, both F/S, Brown would have gone #1, Ablett was uncertain. Cox is a similar prospect as these 2 as he was also a rookie, a great piece of drafting by West Coast, as was Adelaide with the likes of Johncock, Knights, Rutten, Bock, Mattner etc.

No chance in hell I'd swap Mclean and Jones for Cooney and Griffen, and its probably not so much that people outside of Dogs supporters underrate Cooney but rather you all overrate him.

In their second years Deledio showed alot more then Murphy IMO

Compare the 2nd years.

Stat---------Deledio ------Murphy
Kicks...............241...............264
Handballs.........154...............130
Disposals.........395................394
Goals.................5................10
Tackles............35................64

A lot more..... what are you on? When you further consider Murphy has copped the oppositions best tagger most games, your comment becomes a little :o

if im not mistaken cox was rookie listed not drafted

If i'm not mistaken, the only way to be rookie listed is through the rookie draft.
