Ben Cousins was one of my most admired players outside of Carlton. A very tough football player and always wore his heart on his sleeve. Please share some of your famous on field Cousins moments. Mine still would be his gallant return against the swans this year,

final minutes of the 2006 grand final you could tell he was running way harder than anyone on the field. I think it's on youtube as well by someone in the crowd.

On field....
* The game against Geelong in Round 10 last year when we came back from 54 points down

* The following week when we came back against Carlton.

* His 200th game against the Lions at Subiaco.

* The 2006 Prelim against Adelaide

Off field....
* He was good to fans that approached him.

I have a couple that stand out.

In 2002 at Optus Oval he single handedly dragged us across the line against Carlton. Willed himself and the side to victory. We won by 1 point in a time when hadn't' won away for nearly 3 years. I was at the game and was very emotional.

In the 06 Grand Final, the last 90 seconds. He has 2 bounces on then hand passes back to Kerr who centres it. Jones wins the footy handballs to Lynch then over Waters. Waters fumbles towards MCC Members, intercepted by a Swans player. As that player kicks it forward towards where Glass takes it across the line, Cuz is the one diving for the smother. It was 150m sprint in 20 seconds at the end of a taxing game. Seconds later the siren went and it was ours.

Thanks Ben for the memories. I will remember the Good and forget the bad.

THE KING IS DEAD..... LONG LIVE THE KING!
The Club must forge on.

One is from the Geelong game in 2006.

When he ran along the wing, was tackled and handballed it out, got up from the tackle and gathered the ball again.

The 2006 prelim v Adelaide Crucial time of the game last quarter i think. Ball kicked in front of ben running on the wing, picks it up just before two crows players running 1-2 metres apart get to him. He steps to his right then to his left and sneaks through between the two players ( i think mattner and goodwin?) Cant remember what happened after that, it may have been the rojo miss from 15 metres out.

Thanks cuz

The 2006 prelim against the crows. Him, Judd and Kerr shone that day. Also his return this year, to come back and play a game like that was amazing. Honestly, to me, this is ten times worse than Judd leaving. But, the club will be better for it.

So many great moments, his games vs. the Bombers in 2004, 200th game vs. Brisbane in 2005, Geelong and Carlton comebacks in 2006, PF in 2006, 1999 goal of the year, 2006 PF splitting two Crowbots and delivering it to Stinga on the lead, the Kerr handball one two x2 and then goal vs. Bulldogs in the SF, the handball to keep it in play and his tackle on SJ late in the game vs. Geelong last year, final moments of the GF and the scenes immediately after the GF win. I could go on for a while...

Probably my favourite moment was his goal in the dying moments of the Carlton game in 2006 where we were down by a goal and a bit and he made a top tackle on Scotland, the ball spilled to Kerr who handballed it on, Cousins then ran ahead of the play received the handball (from guess who? RoJo) and ran inside 50 to finish it off. Just summed up the way he played footy perfectly for me.

Every time he'd get the ball from outside fifty, run in and blast a goal through on the run. He almost had 100% accuracy with those at the start of his career.

His return was huge as well. 39 Possessions. Just shows why he was a star.

WAY 2 MANY TO MENTION THEM ALL

The guy is a f*cking champion footballer who gave us great moments in every game he played in.

His gutt wrenching run towards the end of games when most were finished was just inspirational - and that wasn't in 1 game - it was in all.

Going to the footy next year is just not going to be the same.

Just quickly the moments that spring to mind:

- 2006 prelim - when he combined with kerr and judd on the wing

- his overall effort in the finals of 06

- his come back this year

- game V geelong last year - his effort on the boundry line on the wing

- v carlton last year when he kicked that goal in the last 1/4 after laying a tackle on Scotland

- THE 2006 GRAND FINAL - HIS 1ST GOAL IN THE GAME "HE'S BEEN RUNNING ALL YEAR - AND HE'S FINISHING STRONG"

- EVERY GAME HE PLAYED WAS A HIGHLIHG AND I WILL TREASURE THE MEMORIES FOREVER

I will miss you BENNY - you are still a champion in my eyes.

But most importantly right now - get well soon mate :thumbsu:

I can remember Ben's first few games at East Fremantle. As a 16-17 year old he showed two things;

1) An amazing will to win the game. Just simply couldn't stand to lose and would, even then, will himself to contest after contest.

2) A natural ability to get the ball. The classic old-fashioned Greg Williams style midfielder.

He was no natural athlete in those days and worked hard to develop his running ability and strength.

I've been thinking back over these past few days to look for any sign in that young kid of the bloke he's become now. All I can say is that he seemed fairly insecure. He tended to project himself in a slightly over-confident manner; trying socially to be something that he was not. But as a boy amongst men that could easily be forgiven. (He formed a friendship with Chicky way back then.) Some of his Wesley mates (including Gardy) were true drongos unfortunately - another sigh of insecurity I suppose, when you hang around a peer-group of losers.

Then hearing him on the radio in the ensuing years I noticed that same, kind of try-hard aspect to his personality.

So I suppose someone with fairly deep insecurities would experience an almost night and day change with the rush of confidence one gets from coke or speed.

.......anyway, this is just me trying to make sense of it all from my very limited exposure to young Benny. He and his family are in for a long haul now - I wish him all the best.

When he kicked a Goal from just outside 50m against the doggies and then his celebration was unforgettable.. the 2 out stretched arms and the twirling of his fingers, that will forever be the image I have of Ben Cousins in mind! Not this other off-field crap...

Ricky Bobby
18 Oct 2007, 12:31
That 'shimmy' he did against the crows in the 06 prewlim was brilliant. His last 3 minutes of the 06 granny. He ran purely on will power! Not many players can will their body to do some of the hard 'gut running' that he could. Maybe Harvey and crawford in their prime. His goal against the doggies from 50 out on the run. Then the outstretched arms. As someone said previously champions of the game deserve a better send off than trudging off AAMI stadium after doing a hammy. Just wish we had a chance to say goodbye and most importantly thankyou to our champ just as essendon did with hird and kangas did with archer. Whatever happens from here on in for cuz we will never forget the great memories he gave us on the field. They are the things i will remember about him. Unfortunately some people have to hit the bottom of the well before they can make their way back up. Lets hope this is the bottom of Benny's well. Good luck Champ!

Theres going to be something noticeable missing from the side now....we stood taller when he was on the field. Someone needs to fill the void with the leadership exodus thats occured. Cmon Big Cox, Glass and Embley.

What about at Subiaco when that weak **** hird had his face broken by his own dumb**** teammate?

Seriously there are too many moments, lots have been mentioned in this thread already. I guess from a young age, even when I did not know all that much about the Eagles I knew about Benny. He was the poster boy and my favourite Eagle for that reason.

He read the play better than any other, ran harder than any other, worked harder on the ground and on the training track than any other Eagle and IMO player over the last odd decade.

I've never seen a player lead as well on the field as Benny. If I could have had it my way I would have never seen him lose the captaincy because on that field, he was the epitome of what a captain should be. Whenever we needed a lift, he would lift, he would get to that extra contest, put in that extra effort, exert every single ounce of energy out of his body in order to help the team win the game. He also seemed to get the absolute most out of himself, he could only just kick it 50 but never to this day have I ever seen him miss a goal from any range, that we needed him to kick.

Ben Cousins was and is an absolute superstar. From a younger fans perspective he was by far the greatest Eagle to have donned the jumper. He bled blue and gold (unlike other unnamed "champions") and lived for the contest. He will forever be rememberd by those who count as a ****ing legend.

From the bottom of my heart Benny, thanks for the memories. Good luck with your battle in the future, we will love you forever.

*W.C.E. - the comeback kings - He played so well against Geelong and Carlton.

*His 200th against Brisbane

*Everything he's done through the midfield - his strength, his run, the effort he put in every match he played .. his "never say die" attitude when he played .. the fantastic play that him and judd showed when working as a duo .. and also him and kerr .. bloody brilliant.

will miss watching him on the ground forever.

The first thing that came to my mind, "Typical Carlton Supporter". Too interested in what is happening at another club to even realise what it happening at his own.
Anyway, everyone please get back on topic.
One of many, probably not even close to my favourite, but it was a great piece of play that I saw on youtube when we were playing the swans. Cousins gathered the ball and was running towards the boundary of the right wing, closely followed by two swans. Then all of a sudden, he slams on the brakes and gets in between both of them.. I don't think anyone else in the AFL in a hundred years could do some of the things Cousins did, which is why I'll miss him. He was one of the most miraculous hard-working players the AFL will ever see.

Too many to choose from.
I was always inspired when he pushed himself so hard that he was vomiting on the sidelines. When he always lifted under pressure and never missed a shot on goal when needed.

His most admirable feature though was the fact that hes not naturally tall, fast or strong. He just had so much heart and was as dedicated to his craft as any footballer has ever been. Even through the Judge years when he carried the team.

As Daniel Kerr said on footy classified a while back, you can imagine what it does to a young bloke to see the skipper train so hard that he can't even walk to his car after a training session... unfortunately he was probably also a role model to kerry off the field :o

Ben WAS the West Coast Eagles over the last ten years.

I thought I would never get over the retirements of guys like Suma, Woosha, Roo, Kempy. Mainy etc - but losing Ben is just devestating. He was the heart and soul of the club.

When Judd left, I thought "who cares". I said to myself that I would be shattered if it was Ben or Daniel leaving. :thumbsd:I still cannot believe that I won't see Ben in the blue and gold again.
I will pay my membership next year (only because I know it would be too hard to get another one in the future) but I don't think my heart will be in football next year. I'm not even sure how mnay games I will attend. At the moment, I am just too emotionally drained to even think about footy.

I have a huge library of games from the past years - so I guess I can still see Ben playing his heart out.

im only 14 years old and as long as i can remember ben cousins has been my favourite and i have always stuck by him and i always will. here are some moments that are memorable

@the ken judge year when we were really struggling ben was our only shining light and racked up an unbelievable amount of possesions

@200th game against brissy in 2005 racked up 30 odd possesions and 4 goals it was inspirational.

@2005 brownlow medal count was so good to watch (he has made top 10 in brownlow 7 times) because he had always done so well just never won one until then. that year was the last uear that ben cousins captained at it was probably his best

@2006 year he dominated again and his finals series was just incredible.

@2006 in grand final he kicked that goal then did that thing he does with his finger that was awesome

@2006 when he was talking to his troops before the grand final - spiritual leader!

@2006 when he was called before everyone else to hold the premiership cup with judd and he swung his arm around and around - he was so happy and it was one of my happiest days

@2007 his comeback from drug rehabilitation 38 possesions man i was so happy i nearly cried with joy was so inspiring to watch

man im so sad that we wont see cuz in a west coast guernsey again - thanks for the memories ben.

For me Benny sticks in my mind through the Judge era when we were getting belted and injury after injury Ben stood tall and battled week in week out.:thumbsu:

I remember walking out of AAMI after being flogged by Port ( over 100pts ) so angry all I could see was ben in my mind just busting his guts while the other were no were to be seen.

The other was the 2006 final against Adelaide were Benny cut them to shredds.

The pain on his face walking down the race after doing his hammy against port, he stops halfway and leans against the wall. That image is forever sketched in my mind.

Absolutely agree...BENNY was guttered when he pulled his hammy. I practically cried when it happened. I thought to myself if we were to some how have made it to the GF and won - would it be the same without BENNY?

Now he will never play 4 us again :(

Got to add this highlight to the thread:

Kerr, Cousins, Judd - the great 3 who will never play together again!!!

Anyone got a good pic of the great 3 together?

Oh man I totally forgot about that. That was such a telling image of our Ben Cousins.

Man I'm going to miss him :(

I cannot ****ing believe Ben Cousins will never play for West Coast again.

But what pisses me off the most is that he wants to go play for another AFL team. TRAITOR.

Cousins isn't a traitor, West Coast sacked him. What do you expect him to do, twiddle his thumbs for the rest of his life?

I still can't comprehend that we will never get to see Ben don the blue and gold.

Ben Cousins in my mine is greter than Hird Kouta Archer and Roo but he doesnt get a farewell like they did. Instead he came off injured, not knowin that would be his last game for the Eagles.

Since i was little Ben Cousins has been the greatest player for me! better than Judd by far!

Its just sad that not only do we never see Ben waer number 9 again but the grandfinal last year was the last time in HISTory that we ever got to see perhaps the greates idfield eagles will ever have inaction Cousins Kerr Judd.

Eagles are in a different place than they were in 2005. I dont think i like it at all. They have changed foreva i dont think they will ever get that zing they had with cousins judd and kerr.

As much i will despise to see him in anything other than the blue and gold alll the pwer to him.

WCE kicked him out on his ass and i 100% support him in continuing his afl career, in fact i would urge him to.

Im actually pissed off at Wce, i think they should hav waited until after the court hearing to mke there descision.

And im even more im furious with the police., becos if they hadnt made that stupid mistake of chargin him he would still be at wc

He should continue it, but I don't believe he will be able to, even if he can nominate for the draft, I don't think anyone will pick him up. His age and off-field actions will vote against him.

Yeah, West Coast should have waited, but there is nothing we can do about that now. Find me one person who actually believed he was not guilty when the news reached them that he had drugs in the car.

That is a really good point. Never really put any thought into that. But I think Ben is going to sue West Coast and the Police. Nothing will happen with West Coast, I don't think, but it will be interesting seeing the police sued.

Yes sorry that was a slight exaggeration. I'm on the edge right now okay? No, I'm just annoyed that after these 11 years of supporting him and having the ut-most respect for him, we sack him and he doesn't really seem to give a ****. He's all ready to go off and play for another AFL team whilst the rest of us are here in mourning. :(

He would (i assume) have hard feelings and would be devestated but he loves the club so wont dare bad mouth their choices.

If he loved us so much why did he act like such a fool when he should have been on his best behaviour? Driving around in a sponsors car with a couple of strippers and a truck-load of prescription drugs doesn't really seem like he had much respect for the club or that he cared about his position there. He knew that a breech of his contract would mean instant sacking -and clearly he breeched something on that contract. He made his own bed and now he should lie in it. It would be the ultimate hypocrisy if the AFL let him play for another team, after laying down so much pressure on us to sack him.

That being said, my favourite Ben Cousins moment would have to be when the little kid presented him with his premiers medallion on the podium and he accepted it and gave them a little pat on the back and said thanks. Proves that once apon a time he was really sweet to his fans. Probably still remains, but he's not so respectful of the club they support:rolleyes:

Also just love seeing that run. The way he carries himself with such a great posture and his legs pounding the field at such an awesome pace -gets my heart pumping everytime.

On field....
* The game against Geelong in Round 10 last year when we came back from 54 points down

His second half was incredible.

I was dissapointed I didn't get to see Judd live, but watching him in that second half made up for it, he couldn't be stopped. (Kerr was handy too;))

Also on the afl website in the 2005 all australian followers there's good footage of him dodging a few melbourne and bulldogs players. I wish there were more of these sorts of highlights.

Oh God :(

Just watched 'Flawed Genius' and I'm literally swimming in tears.

The part that killed me was first the lines "think of me as someone who bleeds" and "I never told you to love me" but what really tipped me to bawling point was towards the end of the song, where it shows the image of Ben sitting on the grass after the 2005 GF looking defeated and theres:

"well you say that you have to leave now... you can't stand the things that I do..."

that just really hit me hard.

Ben is never gonna play for us again. :(
